Characodon lateralis is one of the great survivors of Mexican fishkeeping — a small, spring-dwelling splitfin from the high desert basins of Durango, where a handful of clear, plant-choked springs are all that remain of its wild range. The males are the source of the "rainbow" name: deep reddish flanks washed with bluish-green scales and unpaired fins edged in red and black. It is a viviparous goodeid, bearing live young nourished inside the female, and it is assessed as Critically Endangered — a species whose persistence now depends as much on hobbyist conservation networks as on the dwindling springs of its homeland.

Taxonomy & naming

Characodon lateralis was described by Albert Günther in 1866, the type species of a small genus of goodeid splitfins endemic to the Mesa Central of Mexico. The genus name combines the Greek charax/-akos — a fish — with odous, "teeth," a reference to the distinctive dentition that drew early ichthyologists' attention; the epithet lateralis refers to the lateral markings of the body. The species belongs to the family Goodeidae, the Mexican splitfins, within the order Cyprinodontiformes, and to the live-bearing subfamily Goodeinae.

The taxonomy of Characodon has been unusually tangled. Until the mid-1980s essentially all Durango Characodon were lumped under C. lateralis. Smith and Miller described the black-finned C. audax from El Toboso in 1986, but later genetic work — synthesised by authors including Artigas-Azas and the Goodeid Working Group around 2014 — showed that C. audax falls genetically within the red-finned populations north of the El Saltito waterfall, and placed the C. lateralis type locality near the city of Durango, above the falls. Under that reading C. audax is treated by some workers as a synonym of C. lateralis, while the genetically distinct populations below the falls remain undescribed, circulating in conservation circles as "Characodon sp. 1" (Los Berros) and "sp. 2" (Amado Nervo). Characodon garmani Meek, 1904 is a further synonym. Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) governs the valid name, and the genus remains under active revision.

Because of this unresolved split, much hobby and conservation material refers to the same fish by population or spring of origin. The Goodeid Working Group, which coordinates much of the captive conservation effort, tracks these lineages as distinct evolutionarily significant units pending a formal revision, so a fish labelled simply "Characodon lateralis" in an aquarium may belong to one of several genetically separable forms.

Morphology

Characodon lateralis is a small, stocky splitfin. Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers gives a maximum of about 1.5 in total length for males and up to 2 in for females; Miller and colleagues (2005) report a maximum standard length of roughly 2.5 in. Females are the larger, deeper-bodied sex, while males are smaller and far more colourful — the trait that earns the "rainbow" name.

Male colour is the species' signature: reddish to deep-red body sides overlaid with bluish-green iridescent scales, and red unpaired fins (dorsal, anal and caudal) finished with a dark, often black, terminal band. Females are comparatively drab — an olive-brown ground with a row of two to seven dark blotches along the midline and clear to whitish fins. Male colouration is variable, and some males show a more female-like pattern, a polymorphism that has interested students of the genus.

The diagnostic male feature, as in all goodeines, is the andropodium — a modified anal fin in which the first several rays (about seven) are shortened and set off by a notch, forming the "split fin" that gives the family its English name. Unlike the elongated gonopodium of poeciliid livebearers, the goodeid andropodium is a short, crowded structure used to deliver sperm packets at close range. Adults carry bicuspid outer teeth with conical inner teeth, while juveniles have conical teeth only — a dental shift that, together with a relatively short gut, points to a largely carnivorous habit.

Habitat

Characodon lateralis is endemic to the state of Durango, Mexico, in the upper Río San Pedro basin within the Presidio–San Pedro hydrographic region of the Mesa Central. It is a fish of springs and spring-fed waters: marshy pools, spring outflows and quiet ponds at moderate elevation, with clear to occasionally turbid water, little or no current, and abundant submergent vegetation such as Myriophyllum, Ceratophyllum, Potamogeton and Scirpus. Substrates run from silt, clay and mud to sand, marl, gravel and rock, and the fish favours shallow water, generally less than half a metre deep. FishBase characterises the environment as subtropical fresh water, roughly 64–81 °F, with pH around 6.0–8.0 and moderate hardness.

The species' range has collapsed within living memory. Historically it occurred north of Nombre de Dios in the Río La Villa and Arroyo Las Compuertas and in large springs including Ojo de Agua Los Berros and Ojo de Agua de San Juan. Today it survives at the Los Berros springs and a small spring at La Constancia a few kilometres to the south; it has been extirpated from Ojo de Agua de San Juan and from the Nombre de Dios area.

Two forces drive this contraction. The first is the introduction of exotic fishes — Xiphophorus hellerii, Poecilia mexicana, Gambusia, tilapia and Astyanax mexicanus — which outcompete and prey upon the small native splitfin. The second is the loss of the springs themselves to groundwater pumping and diversion for agriculture and human use, which has dried habitats that the species cannot leave.

Feeding

Wild Characodon lateralis is best described as a micro-carnivore with omnivore leanings. The combination of bicuspid and conical adult teeth, purely conical juvenile teeth and a comparatively short gut indicates a diet weighted toward animal prey. In its spring habitats it takes small invertebrates — insect larvae such as bloodworms, mysids, cladocerans and similar zooplankton — supplemented by aufwuchs and filamentous algae grazed from plants and surfaces. FishBase places it at a low trophic level (around 2.0), consistent with a small fish feeding near the base of the food web.

In the aquarium the species is straightforward to feed and does best on a varied, protein-rich diet. Small live and frozen foods — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm, mysis and the like — suit it well and bring out breeding condition and colour, while good-quality flake and micro-pellets serve as a staple. A modest vegetable or algal component reflects the natural diet and helps keep the fish in trim. As with most small, active spring fishes, several small feedings are preferable to one heavy meal.

Mating

Characodon lateralis is viviparous and, like other goodeines, practises internal fertilisation. The male's reproductive organ is the andropodium — a short, notched modification of the front of the anal fin rather than the long rod-like gonopodium of guppies and mollies. Because the andropodium is short, courtship and insemination happen at close quarters: the male approaches and displays his red-and-black finnage and reddish flanks to the female, and sperm is transferred at very short range. Wild males vary in colour, and the brighter, well-marked individuals are presumed to be favoured in this close-range display.

Goodeid reproduction differs in a fundamental way from the poeciliid model. Goodeines do not store sperm for long periods and do not show the superfetation (overlapping broods at different stages) seen in some other livebearers; each brood follows its own mating. The young are not nourished by a yolk alone but are fed inside the female through trophotaeniae — ribbon-like external structures that connect the developing embryo to the maternal tissue, making goodeids genuinely matrotrophic, or placenta-like, livebearers. This investment is reflected in relatively small broods of comparatively large, well-developed young.

Breeding

In the wild the breeding season is protracted, running roughly from early March through to August or September; newly born young from about 0.5 in standard length have been collected across that span. After internal fertilisation the female carries the embryos through a gestation of about 55 days, nourishing them via trophotaeniae, and gives birth to live, free-swimming young — typically on the order of 5 to 20 per brood, with brood size scaling with the size and condition of the female. Sexual maturity comes early, at around five months, and FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with a population doubling time under fifteen months under favourable conditions.

In captivity the species breeds readily when given a seasonal rhythm. A common and effective approach mirrors the wild cycle: a cool rest period below about 68 °F for two to three months in winter halts breeding, after which spawning resumes at 68–70 °F in spring; breeding stops again above roughly 77 °F. Where climate allows, the fish can be kept in outdoor ponds or tubs from spring to autumn whenever daytime water temperatures stay above about 63 °F, and such seasonal outdoor keeping often produces the strongest broods.

The newborns are large enough to take finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp immediately. As with most small livebearers, cover matters — dense planting gives fry refuge — and conservation-minded keepers maintain Characodon in single-species setups to preserve the genetic integrity of each spring lineage, since this captive stock is, for several populations, a meaningful part of the species' surviving genetic diversity.

In the aquarium

Characodon lateralis is a rewarding but somewhat demanding fish, better suited to an aquarist with a little experience than to an absolute beginner. The Goodeid Working Group's husbandry notes call for a relatively large, low and wide aquarium — on the order of 40 US gal or more, with a broad footprint and modest height — providing well-oxygenated water (ideally 8 mg/L or more of dissolved oxygen) with moderate to brisk current. Large, frequent water changes are important: weekly changes of 60–80 % suit the species' preference for clean, spring-like conditions.

The single most important husbandry point is temperature. This is a subtropical spring fish that needs a genuine cool season: a winter rest below about 68 °F for two to three months not only triggers good spring breeding but appears to support long-term health, and sustained temperatures above 77 °F are stressful and shut down reproduction. Stable, hard-to-neutral water in the pH 6–8 range and plenty of fine-leaved plants complete the setup. Where the climate permits, summering the fish outdoors in a planted tub mimics the natural regime well.

For conservation reasons many keepers maintain Characodon as a single-species display rather than in a mixed community, both to avoid hybridisation between Characodon forms and to keep distinct spring lineages pure. Males can be mildly aggressive toward one another, so a group with several females per male and ample cover spreads out any sparring. Kept cool, clean and well fed, the rainbow characodon is hardy and long-lived — and keeping it well is, in a real sense, an act of conservation.

Conservation

Characodon lateralis is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv), in an assessment dated 18 April 2018 (species id 4531). The listing reflects an extremely restricted and fragmented range that has shrunk to a small number of springs in Durango, with continuing decline in extent of occurrence, area of occupancy, habitat quality and number of locations. In Mexico the species is additionally listed as "En Peligro de Extinción" (P) under NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010.

The two principal threats are the same forces that drove the historical range collapse. Introduced exotic fishes — swordtails, mollies, mosquitofish, tilapia and tetras among them — prey on young and outcompete the small native splitfin, while extraction and diversion of groundwater dry the springs the species depends on absolutely. Because the fish cannot disperse between isolated springs, each local extirpation is effectively permanent in the wild.

For a Critically Endangered spring endemic, captive populations are an essential safeguard. The Goodeid Working Group and allied aquarist and institutional networks maintain ark populations of the distinct Characodon lineages, deliberately keeping spring forms separate to preserve their genetic identity against an uncertain future in the wild. This makes responsible hobbyist husbandry — clean water, the correct seasonal cycle, single-lineage maintenance and careful record-keeping — a genuine contribution to the survival of one of Mexico's most endangered freshwater fishes.
