Dermogenys brachynotopterus is a small, internally fertilising halfbeak known from a single specimen and almost nothing else. Described from the Hooghly estuary of West Bengal in north-eastern India in the mid-nineteenth century, it has never been reliably recorded since, and the one female that defines the species is incomplete — its diagnostic upper jaw broken off. The result is a fish that sits in the literature as little more than a name and a holotype: a viviparous halfbeak whose biology can only be sketched from its relatives, and whose very validity as a distinct species remains unresolved.

Taxonomy & naming

Dermogenys brachynotopterus was established by the Dutch ichthyologist Pieter Bleeker in the mid-1850s, from material collected in the Hooghly (Hoogly) estuary of West Bengal, north-eastern India. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the species is placed in the genus Dermogenys within the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of the order Beloniformes — a group long treated within Hemiramphidae but now generally separated on the basis of their viviparous, internally fertilising reproduction.

The taxonomy of this species is genuinely unsettled, and the reason is the holotype itself. Dermogenys brachynotopterus is supposed to be distinguished from its congeners by an upper jaw that is wider than long, but in the only known specimen the upper jaw is broken off — so the very character that defines the species cannot be checked. Meisner's revisionary work on the genus noted this directly. The holotype also shares a high precaudal vertebra count (26) with the geographically nearby D. burmanica, raising the real possibility that the two are conspecific; were that confirmed, D. brachynotopterus, as the older name, would become the senior synonym. Because no second specimen has ever turned up, the question remains open.

The data here are sparse by any standard. Beyond the original description and the IUCN assessment that compiles it, there is no body of literature on this fish — no redescription from fresh material, no ecological study, and no presence in the aquarium trade. Much of what can be said about it is said at the family or genus level rather than the species level.

Morphology

Dermogenys brachynotopterus is a small halfbeak. The single known specimen is a female recorded at about 2 in standard length, which is the only firm size figure available; like other members of the genus it would have been a slender, elongate, surface-oriented fish with the characteristic halfbeak profile — a fixed, prolonged lower jaw projecting well beyond a short upper jaw, and a dorsal fin set far back toward the tail.

The species' nominal diagnostic feature is an upper jaw wider than it is long, separating it from congeneric halfbeaks. Crucially, that structure is missing from the holotype, which is broken at the jaw, so the diagnosis rests on a character that cannot be verified in the only specimen that exists. The other morphological detail of note is osteological: a precaudal vertebra count of 26, a relatively high figure that it shares with D. burmanica and which feeds the suspicion that the two forms may be one.

No information exists on live colouration, sexual dimorphism in this particular species, or fin and body proportions beyond what the damaged holotype preserves. Anything finer than the genus-level picture would be guesswork — the data are simply not there.

Habitat

Everything known about the habitat of Dermogenys brachynotopterus comes from a single collection locality: the Hooghly estuary and river in West Bengal, in the lower Ganges system of north-eastern India. The IUCN assessment describes it as occurring in the lower courses of rivers and possibly estuaries, and FishBase characterises the species as brackish and pelagic, consistent with a surface-living halfbeak of tidal, lower-river waters. The setting is a tropical, low-lying coastal-plain environment where fresh river water mixes with the marine influence of the Bay of Bengal.

Because the species is known from one specimen at one place, its true distribution and habitat breadth are unknown. Halfbeaks of this group are typically surface-dwelling fishes of slow streams, ditches, ponds and estuarine margins, and D. brachynotopterus was presumably a near-surface fish of that kind. Whether it ranged more widely along the Hooghly or the wider Ganges delta, or was always narrowly restricted, cannot be said from the available material.

The one ecological wrinkle of note is that the Hooghly is now a heavily polluted river — burdened with domestic and urban wastewater, industrial and military effluents, and agricultural run-off near the city of Kolkata. The specific effect of this on the species, if it persists at all, is unknown.

Feeding

No feeding data exist for Dermogenys brachynotopterus specifically. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.1, a figure derived from its group rather than from gut-content study of this fish.

What can be said is drawn from the genus. Halfbeaks of the genus Dermogenys are surface-feeding micro-predators, taking small drifting and surface prey — insects that fall onto the water, mosquito and other insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other small invertebrates picked off the surface film. The long, fixed lower jaw and upturned mouth are an adaptation to this surface-skimming way of life, and D. brachynotopterus would in all likelihood have fed in the same manner.

Beyond that family-level inference there is nothing: no records of diet, prey selection, or feeding behaviour for this species. The honest summary is that its feeding ecology is unknown and can only be assumed from its relatives.

Mating

Dermogenys brachynotopterus belongs to the Zenarchopteridae, the viviparous, internally fertilising halfbeaks — a reproductive mode that sets the family apart from the egg-laying hemiramphids and parallels, by convergence, the live-bearing toothcarps. In these halfbeaks fertilisation is internal: the male transfers sperm to the female using an andropodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified anterior rays of the anal fin, functionally analogous to the gonopodium of poeciliid livebearers though derived independently. No courtship or mating observations exist for D. brachynotopterus itself; this account is at the family and genus level.

In the better-studied members of the group, males pursue and display to females and use the andropodium to inseminate them, after which the female carries developing young internally. As in many internally fertilising fishes, sperm storage by the female is plausible, allowing successive broods, but this has not been documented for the present species and should not be assumed in detail. Whether D. brachynotopterus showed the sexual dimorphism typical of the genus is unknown, because the only specimen is a single female and there is no male to compare.

In short, the mating biology of this particular halfbeak is entirely inferred. What is reasonably secure is the reproductive mode — internal fertilisation via an andropodium — because it is a fixed feature of the family to which the species belongs.

Breeding

As an internally fertilising halfbeak, Dermogenys brachynotopterus is expected to be viviparous, the female retaining the fertilised eggs and giving birth to free-swimming young rather than scattering eggs. This is the established condition across the Zenarchopteridae and the genus Dermogenys, and it is the only basis on which the species' breeding can be described — there are no observations of gestation, brood size, fry, or birth for this fish.

In related Dermogenys halfbeaks for which captive data exist, broods are modest — commonly on the order of a few up to a few tens of young after an internal gestation of several weeks, the young born as fully formed miniatures able to feed at once. Superfetation — carrying several broods at different stages of development simultaneously — occurs in some livebearing fishes but has not been documented for this species and should not be presumed. By the same caution, specific figures for gestation length, brood size, or fry size for D. brachynotopterus are not available and are not stated here.

The practical reality is that this species has never been bred in captivity and may not even be a distinct biological entity. Its breeding section can therefore only restate the family pattern: viviparous, internally fertilised, live-bearing, with the details left blank for want of data.

In the aquarium

Dermogenys brachynotopterus is not an aquarium fish. It is known from a single nineteenth-century holotype, has never been recorded again, and has no presence whatever in the hobby — there is no captive stock, no husbandry tradition, and no care literature for it. No specialist livebearer or biotope source documents the species.

Any keeping notes would have to be borrowed wholesale from the surface-dwelling Dermogenys halfbeaks that are occasionally kept, such as the wrestling halfbeaks of the D. collettei group. Those fish are delicate, nervous surface-swimmers that want a covered tank (they jump), gentle flow, floating cover, small live and surface foods, and often slightly hard or even brackish water — but applying any of this to D. brachynotopterus specifically would be unfounded, because nothing is known about its tolerances.

The honest position is that this is a museum species, not a living one in any practical aquarium sense. There is no care rating to give and no husbandry to recommend.

Conservation

Dermogenys brachynotopterus is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (Ng, H.H. 2010; e.T166439A6209556; assessed 12 October 2009, version 3.1), and the assessment is flagged as needing updating. The Data Deficient listing is well justified: the species is known only from its holotype, has not been recorded since its original discovery, and its taxonomic validity is itself in doubt because the diagnostic upper jaw is missing from the only specimen and the fish may be conspecific with D. burmanica.

With a single specimen and no population data, the population trend is recorded as unknown and no range can be meaningfully delimited beyond the original Hooghly locality. The one identifiable pressure on its presumed habitat is pollution: the Hooghly River near Kolkata is heavily contaminated by domestic, urban, industrial and agricultural effluents. The specific impact of this on the species — if it still exists as a distinct, extant entity — cannot be assessed. Given its small size, it is unlikely to be of any fisheries interest.

The conservation reality is that the basic taxonomy must be resolved before the status of this fish can be judged. Until fresh material clarifies whether D. brachynotopterus is a valid species or a synonym of D. burmanica, Data Deficient is the only defensible category.
