Taxonomy & naming
Dermogenys burmanica was described by the Indian zoologist D. D. Mukerji in 1935, from material collected in Burma (present-day Myanmar). The species belongs to the genus Dermogenys, the viviparous halfbeaks, which together with the genus Nomorhamphus forms the core of the internally fertilising halfbeaks now placed in the family Zenarchopteridae. Earlier literature placed these fishes within the Hemiramphidae (the egg-laying marine and brackish halfbeaks), in the subfamily Zenarchopterinae; the modern arrangement elevates that group to family rank, recognising that the freshwater livebearing halfbeaks are a distinct lineage that evolved internal fertilisation independently of the New World poeciliids.
The genus Dermogenys was the subject of a major systematic revision by Andrew Meisner in 2001 (Phylogenetic systematics of the viviparous halfbeak genera Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society 133:199–283), which remains the principal reference for the genus and recognises D. burmanica as a valid species. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Dermogenys burmanica Mukerji, 1935 as the valid name. The genus name combines the Greek derma, "skin," with genys, "jaw" or "lower face," while the epithet burmanica refers to Burma, the country of the type material.
Morphology
Dermogenys burmanica is a small, slender, surface-adapted fish reaching about 2.5 in in standard length. The body is elongate and nearly cylindrical, the back flat and the mouth set high on the head — the build of a fish that spends its life pressed against the underside of the water's surface. As in all halfbeaks, the defining feature is the jaw: the lower jaw is greatly elongated into a fixed "beak," while the upper jaw is short and triangular and remains mobile, an arrangement that lets the fish snap up small prey at the surface.
Colouration is modest and largely translucent, as is typical of the genus, with a silvery flank and little of the bright pigment that makes the poeciliid livebearers popular. The dorsal and anal fins are set far back on the body, close to the tail, giving the fish the propulsion to dart forward in short bursts after prey. Detailed morphometric and meristic characters separating D. burmanica from its congeners are given in Meisner's revision; species-level colour and pattern notes for the living fish are sparse in the literature.
Habitat
The species is recorded from fresh waters of Myanmar and Bangladesh, where FishBase classifies it as a tropical freshwater, pelagic fish of the surface layer. Members of the genus Dermogenys are characteristically fishes of slow-flowing and still lowland waters — small rivers, canals, irrigation ditches, flooded fields, and ponds — and frequently occur in the soft-to-hard waters of coastal lowlands, sometimes extending into slightly brackish reaches near the coast. Specific habitat data for D. burmanica itself are limited, and the genus-level picture is the best available guide.
What unites these habitats is a calm surface. As an obligate surface predator with an upturned mouth and a rigid lower beak, the fish needs the open, undisturbed film of slow or standing water to detect and seize the insects and other small prey that fall onto or hatch at the surface. Tropical temperatures in roughly the mid-20s Celsius and a tolerance of a wide span of hardness are typical of the genus across the lowland deltas of South and Southeast Asia.
Feeding
Dermogenys burmanica is an insectivorous surface feeder. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.1, consistent with a diet dominated by small animal prey. The genus as a whole specialises in taking terrestrial insects that fall onto the water, emerging aquatic insects and their larvae — including mosquito larvae and pupae — and small drifting zooplankton, all captured in the surface film where the halfbeak's high-set eyes and upturned mouth give it a clear advantage.
The long lower jaw functions as a sensory and trapping structure rather than a grasping one: the fish cruises just beneath the surface and snaps upward at prey detected within reach. In captivity, halfbeaks of this genus accept small floating live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, mosquito larvae, wingless fruit flies and finely chopped foods presented at the surface, and many will eventually take floating dried foods, though they remain reluctant to feed from the bottom. Species-specific diet records for D. burmanica are not detailed in the available sources, and these notes reflect genus-typical feeding.
Mating
Like all members of its genus, Dermogenys burmanica is internally fertilising and livebearing. The reproductive biology differs in an important way from the familiar New World livebearers: the male's intromittent organ is an andropodium, formed from modified rays of the anal fin, rather than the gonopodium of the poeciliids. The two structures look superficially similar and serve the same function — transferring sperm into the female — but they evolved independently, one of the clearest examples of convergent evolution toward livebearing in fishes. Internal fertilisation in the Zenarchopteridae is the trait that sets the family apart from the egg-laying marine halfbeaks.
Males of the genus are well known for their pugnacity toward one another. In several congeners, rival males lock jaws and "wrestle" at the surface, a behaviour that has earned the group the hobby name "wrestling halfbeaks"; this aggression is presumed to function in competition for mates and surface territory. Detailed courtship descriptions specific to D. burmanica are not documented in the available literature, so the genus-level pattern of male competition and andropodium-mediated internal fertilisation stands in for it here.
Breeding
After internal fertilisation, female Dermogenys carry the developing young internally and give birth to fully formed, free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Development in the genus is understood to be lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk laid down in the egg rather than by a maternal placental connection — which distinguishes these halfbeaks from the matrotrophic, placenta-like provisioning seen in some other livebearing lineages. Gestation in the genus runs to several weeks, broadly on the order of three to eight weeks depending on temperature and the individual female.
Broods are relatively small for a livebearer: across the genus, females typically produce on the order of five to twenty-five well-developed fry per brood, scaling with the size of the female. The newborn fry are comparatively large and, being surface-oriented from birth, take small floating foods immediately. As with the genus generally, these reproductive figures are derived from congeners and aquarium experience with related halfbeaks; brood size, gestation length and the presence or absence of superfetation have not been measured specifically for D. burmanica, and the data for this species are sparse.
In the aquarium
Dermogenys burmanica is essentially absent from the aquarium trade, and no species-specific hobby care profile exists; what guidance there is comes from experience with congeners such as the widely kept D. pusilla. Halfbeaks of this genus are surface specialists best housed in a wide, well-covered aquarium with plenty of open surface area, gentle flow, and floating plants to break up the surface and give the fish security. A tightly fitting lid is essential — startled halfbeaks jump — and the fish are notably sensitive to poor water quality and to sudden changes, settling poorly when first imported.
The genus has a reputation as a delicate and somewhat advanced subject rather than a beginner's livebearer. Males are aggressive toward one another and may harass females, so groups are usually kept with a surplus of females and ample surface space to diffuse conflict. Feeding must be directed at the surface, with small live and frozen foods preferred, and brackish-tolerant populations of some congeners do best with a little added salt — though the water requirements of D. burmanica specifically are not documented. On balance this is a fish for the experienced keeper interested in the genus rather than a general community species.
Conservation
Dermogenys burmanica is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment by Heok Hee Ng, published 12 October 2009). The species is considered widespread and reasonably common within its range in Myanmar and Bangladesh, with no major threats identified at the species level, and FishBase likewise notes a low vulnerability to fishing pressure.
As with many small, low-profile fishes of South and Southeast Asian lowlands, the principal long-term concerns for such species are the general pressures on their habitats — pollution, agricultural runoff, water abstraction and modification of the slow lowland waters and wetlands they depend on — rather than any direct exploitation. The species carries no commercial fishery value and only negligible presence in the ornamental trade, so collection is not a meaningful threat. As a Least Concern species it is not a conservation priority, but its dependence on calm, clean surface waters ties its fortunes to the health of the lowland river and canal systems it inhabits.
