Taxonomy & naming
Gambusia beebei was described by the American ichthyologist George S. Myers in 1935, from specimens collected at Lake Miragoane (Etang de Miragoane) on Haiti's Tiburon Peninsula. The genus Gambusia, the New World mosquitofishes, sits within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae — the internally fertilising live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas — in the order Cyprinodontiformes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia beebei Myers, 1935 as the valid name.
The species belongs to the Gambusia nicaraguensis species group, a placement that emerged from the systematic work of Fink (1971) and was carried forward in Rauchenberger's (1989) revision of the genus. Within Haiti it is one of two closely related Gambusia sharing the Miragoane basin, the other being the more salt-tolerant Gambusia hispaniolae; the two are ecologically segregated within and around the lake. The genus name Gambusia derives from the Cuban Spanish word "gambusino," meaning roughly "nothing" — to fish for gambusinos is to catch nothing — a wry reference to the small size and economic worthlessness of these fishes.
The specific epithet honours Dr. Charles William Beebe (1877–1962), the American naturalist, ornithologist, marine biologist and explorer, whose Caribbean and deep-sea expeditions made him one of the best-known field scientists of his era. The English common name in general use, the Miragoane gambusia, simply marks the lake to which the species is endemic.
Morphology
Gambusia beebei is a very small fish, even by the standards of its genus. Males and unsexed specimens reach about 1.5 in in standard length, while females grow considerably larger, to roughly 2.5 in SL (Lucinda 2003). This marked difference in size between the sexes is typical of Gambusia and of poeciliids generally, where females are the larger, deeper-bodied sex and males remain small.
In overall form it is a generalised mosquitofish — a slender, upward-tilted mouth suited to surface and mid-water feeding, with the dorsal fin set well back on the body. As in all male poeciliids, the defining structure is the gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female. Detailed colour and meristic descriptions of G. beebei are sparse in the literature, a direct consequence of how rarely the fish has been collected; the species is far better documented from its distribution and conservation status than from a large series of preserved specimens.
Because the fish is a seldom-encountered relict, this atlas does not assert fine morphological details beyond what the type material and the standard checklists record. Where data are thin, the responsible course is to say so rather than to extrapolate from better-known congeners.
Habitat
Gambusia beebei is endemic to Lake Miragoane (Etang de Miragoane), a permanent coastal freshwater lake on the Tiburon Peninsula of south-western Haiti — the only place on earth where it is known to occur. The lake lies roughly 66 ft above sea level and reaches a maximum depth of about 148 ft; its surface area fluctuates seasonally between about 9 and 16 mi², and it is fringed by some 69 small ponds that together cover around 12 mi². The species' type locality is the south-western end of the lake (Lucinda 2003).
This is a genuinely freshwater fish. In the brackish margins and saltier waters of the basin it is replaced by its salt-tolerant congener, Gambusia hispaniolae, and the boundary between the two appears to be set largely by salinity. The fish's known extent of occurrence and area of occupancy are both very small — on the order of 6–28 mi² — confining it to what the IUCN treats as a single threat-defined location.
The biogeographic history is striking. Fink (1971) suggested that G. beebei was once more widespread within the lake and has since been displaced by the expansion of G. hispaniolae. Surveys before 1989 failed to detect G. beebei at all while reporting G. hispaniolae throughout the lake (Rauchenberger 1989), and it was only the work of Rodríguez-Silva & Weaver (2020) that confirmed the species persisting in a small clear-water outflow at the northern end of the lake — a last refuge for a fish that may once have ranged across the whole basin.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for Gambusia beebei, and the species' rarity means its feeding ecology is inferred rather than directly documented. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with the omnivorous-to-micro-predatory habits typical of the genus. Mosquitofishes of the genus Gambusia are classic surface and mid-water opportunists, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae (including mosquito larvae), zooplankton, and incidental algal and detrital material.
Its upturned mouth and small size point to feeding at and just below the water surface, gleaning drifting and emerging prey. Within the structured habitat of Lake Miragoane — open lake, fringing ponds, and clear outflows — it presumably exploits whatever small live food its particular microhabitat provides.
Because direct observations are lacking, this atlas does not assign G. beebei a specific prey list beyond the genus-level pattern. The honest summary is that it is a small omnivorous micro-predator on the evidence of its genus and trophic position, with species-specific data sparse.
Mating
Like all Gambusia, G. beebei reproduces by internal fertilisation — the trait that defines the live-bearing poeciliids. The male carries a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ built from modified rays of the anal fin, which he uses to deliver sperm directly to the female. In mosquitofishes this is typically achieved through rapid, coercive mating attempts rather than the elaborate courtship displays seen in some other livebearers, with small males darting at females to attempt insemination.
The pronounced size difference between the sexes in G. beebei — males to about 1.5 in SL, females to about 2.5 in SL — is the usual poeciliid pattern, in which the larger female bears the reproductive burden while the male remains small and mobile. As in other Gambusia, females are likely able to store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating, though this has not been documented specifically for G. beebei.
Species-specific reproductive observations are essentially absent for this relict fish, so the account here reflects well-established genus norms rather than direct study. There is no published record of superfetation or matrotrophic placentation in G. beebei, and this atlas does not assert either beyond the lecithotrophic, yolk-nourished mode that is general for the genus.
Breeding
Gambusia beebei is viviparous: the female retains the fertilised eggs internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Gambusia are lecithotrophic, the developing embryos nourished chiefly by yolk rather than by a strong placental connection, and broods generally number in the tens of young, with several broods produced over a season.
FishBase rates the species' resilience as high, with an estimated population doubling time of under 15 months — the fast generation turnover characteristic of small poeciliids, in which females mature quickly and breed repeatedly. This reproductive tempo is, in principle, a conservation asset: a fish that breeds fast can rebound quickly if its habitat and the pressures on it are brought under control.
No brood-size counts, gestation periods, or developmental notes specific to G. beebei appear in the accessible literature, again a reflection of how seldom the species has been collected. The breeding biology described here is therefore the genus-level pattern; precise figures for this species are not available and are not invented here.
In the aquarium
Gambusia beebei is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense. It is a critically endangered, single-lake endemic that is exceedingly rare in collections, and it has no presence in the ornamental trade. There is no established hobbyist husbandry literature for the species, and it should not be sought, collected, or traded from the wild.
Where the species does belong in an aquarium is in the context of conservation. The IUCN assessment explicitly recommends ex-situ captive breeding as one of the urgent actions needed to prevent extinction, alongside protection of its remaining habitat. Any captive holding of G. beebei is therefore properly the work of dedicated conservation programmes and specialist institutions — such as the public-aquarium and zoological networks that maintain assurance colonies of imperilled livebearers — rather than of the general hobby.
For the aquarist, the value of G. beebei is as a cautionary case study: a small, unremarkable-looking mosquitofish that illustrates how a narrowly endemic livebearer can be driven to the brink by habitat loss and introduced competitors, and why responsible fishkeeping means never releasing aquarium fishes into wild waters where they can displace species like this one.
Conservation
Gambusia beebei is assessed as Critically Endangered (CR) on the IUCN Red List under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), version 3.1. The assessment was carried out on 21 April 2020 and published in 2021 (Lyons, T.J. 2021; e.T125922864A125963354). The listing reflects the species' tiny range — an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy on the order of 6–28 mi², confined to a single threat-defined location at Lake Miragoane — combined with a continuing decline in habitat quality.
The threats are severe and compounding. Haiti has suffered near-total deforestation, with forest cover reduced to roughly 1.5–2.6%, driving heavy sedimentation and altered hydrology into the lake. Invasive fishes have been introduced, including tilapia (Oreochromis aureus and Coptodon rendalli) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and the native congener Gambusia hispaniolae appears to have expanded at G. beebei's expense. Sewage inflow has raised faecal coliform levels, and unregulated pesticide and herbicide use — including chemicals used to capture fish — adds further pressure, all against a backdrop of hurricanes and a changing climate.
No protected areas cover the species' range, and there is no species-specific conservation programme in place; the population trend is unknown and collections remain exceedingly rare, with the fish only recently re-confirmed in a single clear-water outflow at the lake's northern end (Rodríguez-Silva & Weaver 2020). The IUCN flags site protection and ex-situ captive breeding as the urgent priorities. Gambusia beebei stands as a stark example of how a narrowly endemic freshwater fish can be pushed to the edge of extinction by the cumulative degradation of its single home water.
