Taxonomy & naming
Limia fuscomaculata was described by the ichthyologist Luis René Rivas in 1980, as part of his work on the livebearing fishes of the Greater Antilles. It belongs to the genus Limia within the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers that also include the guppies, mollies and platies. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the species is treated as Limia fuscomaculata Rivas, 1980. The specific epithet combines the Latin fuscus ("dark, dusky") and maculatus ("spotted, blotched"), giving rise to the English common name "blotched limia."
The genus name Limia derives from the Latin limus, meaning "mud," and was coined by the Cuban naturalist Felipe Poey in 1854 in reference to the muddy, bottom-feeding habits of these fishes. Limia is centred on the islands of the Greater Antilles, with a notable concentration of species on Hispaniola; Lake Miragoâne in Haiti alone hosts a small species flock of endemic limias, of which L. fuscomaculata is one. The genus has at times been merged into or split from Poecilia, but it is consistently recognised as a distinct lineage of Antillean livebearers, and L. fuscomaculata is a well-circumscribed member of that group.
Morphology
Limia fuscomaculata is a small fish. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 1.5 in for the larger sex (females), placing it firmly among the smaller livebearers; males are smaller still, as is typical for the genus. The common name "blotched limia" points to the dusky markings on the body implied by the specific epithet fuscomaculata, with darker spotting or blotching against the body's base colour.
As with all poeciliids, the species shows the family's characteristic sexual dimorphism. Males are smaller and bear a gonopodium — an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm internally — while females are larger, deeper-bodied, and develop a gravid swelling when carrying young. Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this narrowly distributed species are sparse in readily available sources; precise fin-ray counts and live coloration are best taken from Rivas's original 1980 description rather than estimated here. Habitat
Limia fuscomaculata is a freshwater, demersal, non-migratory, tropical fish endemic to Lake Miragoâne (also spelled Miragoane) in south-western Haiti, on Hispaniola. Its entire known global range is this single lake — a textbook narrow-range endemic. Lake Miragoâne is a small, isolated karst/crater lake with hard, alkaline water, and its isolation has driven the in-situ radiation of several endemic Limia species, of which the blotched limia is one.
Because the species is confined to one water body, its habitat and its conservation status are effectively the same question. The lake's hard-alkaline chemistry suits a livebearer that, like many Antillean limias, tolerates and indeed favours mineral-rich water. Specific in-lake measurements of temperature, pH and depth tied to this species are not reported in the cached sources, so any aquarium parameters below are inferred from the lake's general hard-alkaline character and from husbandry of related Lake Miragoâne limias rather than from direct field data for L. fuscomaculata.
Feeding
Detailed diet data specific to Limia fuscomaculata are sparse. FishBase assigns the species a modelled trophic level of roughly 3.0, consistent with an omnivorous to micro-carnivorous diet, and the genus name Limia itself was coined in reference to the muddy, bottom-feeding habits of these fishes. On that basis the blotched limia is best understood as a typical small limia: grazing aufwuchs, algae and detritus from surfaces and substrate, and taking small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae from the water column.
In captivity, livebearers of this type are undemanding and accept a varied omnivore diet — good-quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm, alongside a share of algal or vegetable matter that reflects their natural grazing. Like all poeciliids, Limia fuscomaculata practises internal fertilisation. For keepers who can obtain stock, it is a small, peaceful livebearer suited to a dedicated species or small-group setup.
Water chemistry should reflect its native Lake Miragoâne: hard, alkaline, mineral-rich water at tropical temperatures. Because no published aquarium parameters specific to this species appear in the cached sources, keepers should follow the general practice for Lake Miragoâne limias — hard, alkaline conditions, stable and clean, in the low-to-high 20s Celsius — rather than treat the numbers in the facts panel as precise field measurements. The most important husbandry consideration is provenance and record-keeping: given the species' Critically Endangered status, maintaining genetically documented lines and distributing fry within preservation networks matters as much as the day-to-day care.
Conservation
Limia fuscomaculata is assessed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(iii)+2ab(iii), with the assessment dated 8 May 2020. The listing is driven by the species' extreme range restriction — it is known from a single location, Lake Miragoâne in Haiti — combined with a continuing decline in the extent and quality of its habitat. SHOAL's conservation programme likewise flags the blotched limia among its priority freshwater fishes, and the species is recognised as a single-lake endemic at acute risk.
The threats are those that bear on Lake Miragoâne as a whole: degradation of water quality, habitat alteration, and pressure from introduced or invasive species in a small, isolated lake that cannot easily be recolonised if a population is lost. Because the entire global range is one water body, the species has little buffer against local decline. This is the rationale behind its inclusion in the CARES Preservation Program (CARES classification Critically Endangered, assessed 29 July 2024), which coordinates hobbyist maintenance and breeding of imperilled livebearers; for a fish this narrowly distributed, well-managed ex-situ populations in the hands of dedicated aquarists may prove an important insurance against extinction in the wild.
