The San Felipe gambusia is a tiny live-bearing toothcarp known from a single spring-fed creek on the Texas–Mexico border. Described only in 2003 and named for the ichthyologist Clark Hubbs, Gambusia clarkhubbsi is a true single-locality endemic, confined to the warm, constant-temperature headwaters of San Felipe Creek at Del Rio in Val Verde County, where it lives in sympatry with its relative Gambusia speciosa. Inconspicuous and easily overlooked beside the flashier ornamental livebearers, it is nonetheless one of the more biologically interesting members of its genus — a narrowly restricted desert-spring mosquitofish whose entire global range can be traced on a single map of a Rio Grande tributary.

Taxonomy & naming

Gambusia clarkhubbsi was formally described by Gary P. Garrett and Robert J. Edwards in 2003, in the journal Copeia (2003(4):783–788), under the title "New species of Gambusia (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) from Del Rio, Texas." The type locality is San Felipe Creek, a spring-fed tributary of the Rio Grande at Del Rio, Val Verde County, Texas. The species belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearers — and to the large, taxonomically intricate genus Gambusia, the mosquitofishes. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia clarkhubbsi Garrett & Edwards, 2003 as the valid name.

The genus name Gambusia derives from the Cuban Spanish term gambusino, used figuratively to mean "nothing" — to fish for gambusinos is to catch nothing — a wry reference to the small size and modest catch these fishes represent. The specific epithet clarkhubbsi is a patronym honouring Dr Clark Hubbs (1921–2008), the influential American ichthyologist who devoted much of his career to the fishes of Texas and the desert Southwest. The species is one of several narrowly distributed Gambusia from the trans-Pecos and Rio Grande region, a group in which the genus has radiated into small, isolated spring systems.

Morphology

Gambusia clarkhubbsi is a small fish; FishBase records a maximum length of about 2.5 in SL for females, with males, as is typical of the genus, considerably smaller. In general form it follows the standard Gambusia plan: a compact, somewhat dorsally flattened body, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, a rounded caudal fin, and the dorsal fin set well back on the body. Colouration is muted — silvery to olive flanks over a pale belly — without the bright pigment patterns of the ornamental livebearers, consistent with a fish of clear desert-spring water.

As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ markedly. Males bear a gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally; the precise structure of the gonopodium and its associated bony elements is one of the characters Garrett and Edwards used to distinguish G. clarkhubbsi from the sympatric G. speciosa. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, and develop the dark gravid patch at the rear of the abdomen when carrying young. Fine meristic and morphometric details separating this species from its close relatives are given in the original 2003 description.

Habitat

The San Felipe gambusia is a single-locality endemic, known only from San Felipe Creek, a spring-fed tributary of the Rio Grande at Del Rio in Val Verde County, Texas, U.S.A. The creek is fed by warm desert springs of relatively constant temperature, producing a clear, stable, thermally buffered freshwater environment quite different from the fluctuating surface streams of the region. FishBase characterises the species as freshwater, benthopelagic and temperate in this spring-influenced setting.

Within San Felipe Creek, Gambusia clarkhubbsi occurs in sympatry with Gambusia speciosa, with the two species sharing the headwaters according to the Fishes of Texas project, citing the original description. This extreme range restriction — the entire known global distribution confined to one short spring-fed creek — is the defining ecological fact about the species and the basis of its conservation status. The constancy of the spring habitat is both its refuge and its vulnerability: a stable home so long as the springs flow, but one with no second population to fall back on.

Feeding

No diet study specific to Gambusia clarkhubbsi appears in the available sources, so its feeding ecology is inferred from its genus and habitat (data sparse). FishBase places the species at a trophic level of roughly 3.2, consistent with a small omnivorous micro-predator rather than a strict herbivore or piscivore. Mosquitofishes of the genus Gambusia are generalist surface and water-column feeders, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae — including mosquito larvae, the trait that gives the genus its common name — zooplankton, and incidental algae and detritus.

In its warm, spring-fed creek the San Felipe gambusia can reasonably be expected to forage on drifting and benthic invertebrates and on the larvae of insects breeding in and around the water. As with other Gambusia, an upturned mouth and surface-oriented body suit it to picking food items from the upper water layers. Quantitative dietary data — prey proportions, seasonal shifts, foraging behaviour — are not published for this narrow endemic.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Gambusia clarkhubbsi reproduces by internal fertilisation rather than external spawning. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal-fin organ that is the structural hallmark of the family. Males are smaller and more mobile than females and, as is general in Gambusia, pursue females persistently; courtship in the genus typically combines display with frequent gonopodial thrusting attempts rather than elaborate territorial behaviour.

Female livebearers in this family commonly store viable sperm internally, allowing a single insemination to fertilise more than one successive brood, though the specifics of sperm storage have not been documented for G. clarkhubbsi itself. The fine details of the gonopodium and its supporting skeleton were among the diagnostic characters used to separate this species from the sympatric Gambusia speciosa in the 2003 description — a reminder that in this genus the reproductive anatomy of males is taxonomically as well as biologically central. Mating-system specifics unique to this species are not reported in the available literature (data sparse).

Breeding

Gambusia clarkhubbsi is viviparous — a true livebearer — as is typical of Gambusia and the Poeciliidae generally. After internal fertilisation the female retains the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Development in Gambusia is lecithotrophic: the embryos are nourished by yolk rather than by a placenta-like maternal connection, so the female provisions her young chiefly before fertilisation. Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — is documented in some poeciliid genera but is not reported for this species, and no superfetation should be assumed here.

Quantitative reproductive data for the San Felipe gambusia — gestation length, brood size, frequency of broods, size at birth — are not given in the available sources (data sparse). By analogy with other small Gambusia, broods are likely modest in number and produced repeatedly through a warm-water breeding season, which in a thermally constant spring may extend across much of the year. In the aquarium

Gambusia clarkhubbsi is not an aquarium-trade fish. No dedicated hobby care profile for the species was located, including from the American Livebearer Association, and its narrow endemic status means it is essentially absent from ornamental keeping (data sparse). Any husbandry guidance must therefore be drawn by analogy from other spring-dwelling Gambusia, and the species should be regarded as one of conservation and scientific rather than hobby interest.

Were it ever maintained — in a research or conservation context — its biology points to clear requirements: warm, clean, well-oxygenated fresh water reflecting its constant-temperature spring origin, stable parameters rather than precisely tuned ones, and the live foods and small prey items suited to a surface-feeding micro-predator. As with all Gambusia, males harass females persistently, so a female-skewed sex ratio reduces stress, and the genus is notorious for fin-nipping and aggression toward other small fishes, making it a poor mixed-community resident. For the aquarist the most useful point is the simplest one: this is a single-creek endemic best left in its creek, not a candidate for casual collection or keeping.

Conservation

Gambusia clarkhubbsi is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List under criterion D2, an assessment dated 3 February 2012 (IUCN species id 202392). The D2 criterion applies to species with a very restricted range or very few locations, such that a plausible future threat could drive them to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a short time. For the San Felipe gambusia that restriction is absolute: the species is known from a single spring-fed creek, San Felipe Creek at Del Rio, and has no other population anywhere.

The central conservation concern is therefore the integrity of that one spring system. Desert springs in the Rio Grande basin are sensitive to groundwater extraction, declining spring flow, habitat modification, pollution, and the introduction of non-native fishes — any of which could affect a single-locality endemic with no refuge population. Because the species shares its creek with the related Gambusia speciosa, maintaining the natural condition and flow of the San Felipe Creek headwaters is essential to both. For an atlas reader the practical message is that the future of this species rests entirely on protecting one small body of water, and that releasing aquarium fishes or otherwise disturbing such spring systems carries outsized risk for the narrow endemics that depend on them.
