Taxonomy & naming
Gambusia speciosa was described by Charles Frédéric Girard in 1859, from material in the Rio Grande (Rio Bravo) drainage of the borderland between the United States and Mexico. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Gambusia speciosa Girard, 1859 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Gambusia within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — in the order Cyprinodontiformes. The genus Gambusia, the mosquitofishes, is one of the largest poeciliid genera, centred on the freshwaters of the southern United States, Mexico and the Caribbean.
For much of the twentieth century G. speciosa was confused with, or treated as a form of, the ubiquitous western mosquitofish Gambusia affinis, with which it overlaps in the lower Rio Grande system. Its standing as a distinct, well-circumscribed species was reaffirmed by the work of Nelson and colleagues (2004) and by Robert Rush Miller's authoritative Freshwater Fishes of México (2005), which separated it cleanly from the affinis complex. The common name "Tex-Mex gambusia" reflects this border-straddling range; in Mexico it is also called the guayacón de Nuevo León, after one of the states in which it occurs.
The genus name Gambusia derives from the Cuban Spanish term gambusino, used in the phrase "pescar gambusinos" — to fish for nothing, that is, to come back empty-handed — a wry reference to the small size and slight food value of these fishes. The specific epithet speciosa is Latin for "showy" or "beautiful," an unusually flattering name within a genus better known for drabness.
Morphology
Gambusia speciosa is a small fish with the stout, slightly compressed, upturned-mouthed body typical of the mosquitofishes — built for surface feeding in shallow water. As in nearly all Gambusia, the sexes differ markedly in size: males are diminutive, reaching only about 1 in total length, while females are considerably larger and deeper-bodied, growing to around 2 in total length. The colouration is muted — silvery to olive flanks over a pale belly — without the bright pigment that gives the epithet speciosa its meaning to the human eye; the "showiness" is subtle rather than gaudy.
The defining sexual feature is the male's gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female. Its development, together with the male's small size and slimmer body, distinguishes the sexes at a glance once mature. Gravid females show the dark abdominal patch common to livebearing poeciliids as the developing young fill the body cavity. Distinguishing G. speciosa from sympatric G. affinis relies on fine meristic and morphometric characters rather than any single obvious field mark, which is why the two were so long conflated.
Habitat
Gambusia speciosa is a fish of clear, spring-influenced waters. It is found in springs and spring outflows, marshes, and the margins of small to medium streams, and is especially abundant in shallow headsprings — surveys at sites such as Pinto Creek and the Texas spring systems record it in large numbers. Miller (2005) characterises its habitat as clear to murky water with vegetation of green algae, Chara and other submerged plants, over substrates of mud, silt, sand, gravel or flat limestone, in slight to moderate current or none at all, generally at depths of no more than about a third of a metre.
Its native range is centred on the Rio Grande / Rio Bravo basin and adjacent drainages. In the United States it occurs in the headwaters of the Guadalupe River system in Texas — including Comal Creek and the San Marcos River — westward toward the Pecos River in southeastern New Mexico. In Mexico it ranges from the Rio San Carlos south of Ciudad Acuña through the upper Rio Salado and Rio San Juan of the Rio Bravo basin, extending south into the Rio Soto la Marina drainage, across the states of Coahuila, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas and Chihuahua.
The species is tropical to warm-temperate in its requirements, with a recorded temperature range of roughly 73–82 °F. Its dependence on spring-fed waters makes it sensitive to anything that reduces flow or water availability, a point that recurs in assessments of its conservation status.
Feeding
Like other mosquitofishes, Gambusia speciosa is an opportunistic omnivore and surface-oriented micro-predator. FishBase places it at a trophic level of around 3.2, consistent with a diet dominated by small invertebrates supplemented with plant and detrital material. In its spring and stream habitats it takes small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae — including mosquito larvae, the basis of the genus's reputation — zooplankton, and algae and detritus grazed from vegetation and substrate.
The upturned mouth is adapted for feeding at and just below the water surface, where mosquitofishes intercept emerging insects, drifting prey and surface films. As with the genus generally, the balance of animal to plant matter in the diet shifts with what is locally available and with the season. Detailed dietary studies specific to G. speciosa are sparse in the cached record, and the account here rests on the well-established feeding ecology of small Gambusia rather than on species-specific gut analyses.
Mating
Gambusia speciosa reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining trait of the poeciliid livebearers. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ. As is typical of the genus, courtship is minimal: male mosquitofishes invest little in display and instead pursue females persistently, relying largely on rapid "sneak" copulation attempts rather than the elaborate visual courtship seen in more colourful poeciliids such as guppies.
Males mature small and early, and the marked size difference between the sexes — tiny males and much larger females — is itself a consequence of this mating system, in which female fecundity scales with body size while males are selected for agility and persistence. Females can store viable sperm internally, allowing successive broods to be produced from a single mating, a common feature of Gambusia that is consistent with the reproductive biology of G. speciosa, though brood-by-brood paternity data specific to this species are not given in the cached sources.
Breeding
Gambusia speciosa is a viviparous livebearer. Following internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. Reproduction in the genus is lecithotrophic — the embryos are nourished by yolk supplied to the egg before fertilisation, without the placenta-like maternal provisioning (matrotrophy) seen in some other poeciliids. Experimental stream studies (Matthews and colleagues, 2006) confirmed that the species reproduces and produces larvae successfully under semi-natural conditions, documenting its livebearing reproduction directly.
As with mosquitofishes generally, females produce multiple broods over a warm-season breeding period, with gestation lasting on the order of several weeks and shortening in warmer water. Brood sizes in small Gambusia are modest — typically a few to a few dozen fry per brood — and scale with female size, though a precise brood-size figure specific to G. speciosa is not recorded in the cached sources and is left unstated rather than guessed. The newborn fry are fully formed miniatures, able to swim and feed immediately; there is no parental care, and adults will take small fry, so cover and dense vegetation are what allow young to survive.
In the aquarium
Gambusia speciosa is rarely kept and is not a commercial aquarium fish; it is encountered mainly by livebearer specialists and in conservation or research contexts. Its requirements follow from its natural history: clear, well-oxygenated, hard, alkaline spring water in the low-to-high 20s Celsius, with submerged vegetation and gentle to moderate flow. Like other mosquitofishes it is extremely hardy and adaptable, tolerant of a wide range of conditions, and easy to maintain for anyone equipped to keep small native livebearers.
The usual caveats for the genus apply. Mosquitofishes can be nippy and aggressive toward tankmates relative to their size, so a species tank or careful selection of robust, similarly sized companions suits them best, and well-planted cover both reduces aggression and shelters fry. As a North American native with a track record of harm where its relatives have been introduced, G. speciosa should never be released into the wild outside its range — the responsible keeper treats it strictly as a closed-system fish.
Conservation
Gambusia speciosa is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 4 December 2018). At the global scale the species is considered widespread and reasonably secure within its borderland range, and several individual sites support very large populations — more than three thousand fish were collected at Pinto Creek, Texas, in a single 2002 effort, and total abundance is presumed to exceed a hundred thousand.
Regional assessments are more cautious, reflecting the species' dependence on spring-fed waters. NatureServe assigns it a global rank of G3Q — apparently secure to vulnerable, with the "Q" flagging lingering taxonomic uncertainty — and the American Fisheries Society listed it as Threatened in its 2008 review of imperiled North American fishes; it carries no United States Endangered Species Act status. The divergence between the Least Concern global category and these more concerned regional ratings is itself worth noting for readers.
The principal threats are reduced water availability — through groundwater pumping, spring decline and possible climate change — and the impact of non-native species in its habitats. Because so much of its range depends on a relatively small number of springs and headwater systems, the long-term outlook for G. speciosa is tied closely to the fate of those waters, even where the species remains locally abundant today.
