Gambusia melapleura is a small, plainly marked livebearer found nowhere on earth but Jamaica, where it survives in a single cluster of freshwater springs feeding the Shrewsbury River near Bluefields. It is one of the many mosquitofishes of the genus Gambusia — surface-dwelling, internally fertilising toothcarps of the Americas — but unlike its notoriously hardy and invasive relatives, this Jamaican endemic occupies a range so tight that the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable. It is a fish defined less by colour or commerce than by geography: a narrow-range islander quietly pressured by the very congeners that have colonised so much of the rest of the world.

Taxonomy & naming

Gambusia melapleura was first described by Philip Henry Gosse in 1851, from Jamaican material, during the period when the English naturalist was documenting the island's natural history. The species is treated within the genus Gambusia in the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that include the guppies, mollies, swordtails and the mosquitofishes — and within the subfamily Poeciliinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name; the combination is rendered with the authority in parentheses, Gambusia melapleura (Gosse, 1851), reflecting the species' movement between genera since its original description.

Gambusia is a large and taxonomically demanding genus, and the Jamaican fauna in particular has been the subject of revisionary work — Rauchenberger's studies of the systematics and biogeography of Gambusia, together with Lucinda's 2003 checklist of the Poeciliidae of South and Central America, anchor the modern placement of the species. The common name on record is the "Striped gambusia." As with the genus generally, the popular name "mosquitofish" attaches loosely to these surface-feeding livebearers, but G. melapleura is a narrow-range endemic rather than one of the broadly distributed forms that have been spread for mosquito control.

Morphology

Gambusia melapleura is a small fish that shows the pronounced sexual size dimorphism characteristic of its genus, in which females are substantially larger than males. Recorded maxima are about 1.5 in standard length for males and roughly 2.5 in standard length for females — a near-doubling of body length between the sexes that is typical of Gambusia and reflects the reproductive economy of a livebearer in which the female must carry developing young internally.

In overall form the species follows the generalised gambusia body plan: a compact, somewhat laterally compressed body, an upturned mouth suited to surface feeding, and a dorsal fin set well back. Detailed pigmentation and meristic data for this species are sparse in the accessible literature, and the atlas declines to assert fine colour-pattern details that cannot be sourced; the recorded common name ("Striped gambusia") points to dark lateral markings, and the specific epithet itself alludes to a dark flank. The defining male feature, shared across the poeciliids, is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays and used to transfer sperm internally to the female.

Habitat

Gambusia melapleura is endemic to Jamaica, and its known range is extraordinarily restricted: the species is recorded from a series of freshwater springs in the Shrewsbury River drainage near Bluefields, in the south-west of the island. The IUCN treats the entire population as a single threat-based location, with an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy each estimated at no more than about 8 square kilometres. Few historical collection records exist, and the population size is suspected to be small in proportion to that tiny footprint.

The habitat is classed as inland freshwater wetland — springs and spring-fed oases of the kind that characterise parts of the Jamaican lowlands. As a benthopelagic, non-migratory tropical livebearer, the species lives at and near the surface of these warm, still-to-slowly-flowing waters. Because the documented range is confined to this one spring system, the fish's fortunes are tied directly to the integrity of those springs; the atlas does not assign precise temperature or chemistry figures for the wild habitat, as species-specific water data are not available in the sources consulted, beyond the general expectation of warm, tropical fresh water.

Feeding

Gambusia melapleura is a surface-oriented micro-predator, as its body plan and the ecology of its genus imply. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.2, consistent with a carnivore/insectivore tendency: the diet of these mosquitofishes centres on small invertebrates taken at and just below the surface — insect larvae (including mosquito larvae), small crustaceans and zooplankton, and other drifting items within reach of the upturned mouth.

Like other gambusias, the species is an opportunistic feeder whose exact diet will track local availability within its spring habitat. Mating

Breeding

Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — is documented in some poeciliids but is not universal across Gambusia, and there is no source confirming it for this species; it is therefore noted only as a possibility rather than asserted. Gambusia melapleura is not an aquarium-trade fish in any meaningful sense: it is a narrow-range Jamaican endemic of conservation concern rather than a commercial livebearer, and it is most relevant to specialist livebearer enthusiasts and conservation-minded keepers rather than the general hobby. Any keeping of the species belongs in the context of responsible, ideally permit-backed maintenance rather than casual acquisition.

In general husbandry terms, a mosquitofish of this type would suit warm, well-oxygenated fresh water with surface access for its surface-feeding habit, gentle flow, and the dense planting or floating cover that livebearers need to shelter fry from cannibalistic adults. Females outnumbering males reduces the harassment that coercive gambusia mating imposes on any single fish. The atlas declines to specify precise temperature or chemistry targets for this species, as sourced figures are not available; the overriding husbandry point is the conservation one — gambusias are escape artists with a record of becoming invasive, and a Vulnerable endemic such as this must never be released or allowed to escape into local waters.

Conservation

The listing rests on the species' extremely small range — a single location in the Shrewsbury River springs near Bluefields, with an extent of occurrence and area of occupancy each estimated at no more than about 8 square kilometres — which makes the population plausibly vulnerable to becoming Critically Endangered or even extinct over a very short period should threats reach its habitat. The population trend is recorded as unknown, and the assessment urges further research.

The threats identified for Jamaican freshwater habitats, and for this species in particular, include pollution and water abstraction for agriculture, deforestation and land-use change, residential and commercial development tied to tourism and recreation, and — critically for a small native gambusia — the establishment of non-native congeners. Introduced mosquitofishes such as Gambusia affinis and G. holbrooki, spread worldwide for mosquito control, compete with and can hybridise with native gambusias; project work on Jamaican poeciliids has documented native island gambusias under exactly this competitive and hybridisation pressure, including controlled cross-breeding experiments between the invasive G. affinis and native forms. For G. melapleura, with its entire world population confined to one spring system, that combination of habitat degradation and invasive congeners is the central conservation concern.
