Cyprinodon nichollsi is a small pupfish endemic to Laguna Oviedo and surrounding coastal lagoons of the Dominican Republic — one of the most geographically restricted freshwater fishes in the Caribbean. Described by Smith in 1989 from specimens collected at Laguna Oviedo on Hispaniola's southern coast, it inhabits hard, alkaline, brackish-influenced waters fringed by mangrove vegetation, where it faces mounting pressure from coastal development and habitat degradation. The IUCN assessed the species as Least Concern in 2020, though its extremely limited range makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised disturbance.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyprinodon nichollsi was described by Smith in 1989, with the type locality given as Laguna Oviedo in the Dominican Republic. The holotype (AMNH 58279, a male measuring 3 in SL) was deposited at the American Museum of Natural History, and paratypes span a size range of approximately 1–3 in SL. The species belongs to the genus Cyprinodon — the pupfishes — within the family Cyprinodontidae, and is recognised as a valid species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes (Fricke, Eschmeyer & Fong).

The genus Cyprinodon is extraordinarily species-rich in the Caribbean and the American Southwest, with numerous narrow-range endemics each tied to a specific spring, lagoon, or coastal water body. Caribbean Cyprinodon represent a distinct radiation from the continental-desert lineages, adapted to brackish coastal and lagoonal environments rather than isolated inland springs. Comprehensive cyprinodontid checklists note that Caribbean Cyprinodon, including C. nichollsi, have some of the smallest ranges of any animal group, making taxonomic precision and geographic documentation especially important for conservation.

The specific epithet honours a person named Nicholls; the precise dedication is recorded in the original description. There are no widely used common names for this species in the hobby or scientific literature.

Morphology

Cyprinodon nichollsi is a compact, deep-bodied pupfish reaching a maximum recorded length of 3.5 in total length (FishBase), though most adults are considerably smaller. The holotype male measured 3 in SL and females in the type series ranged from 1–2.5 in SL, suggesting the species reaches a moderate size for the genus. The body form is typical of Cyprinodon: stocky and laterally compressed with a blunt snout, a small upturned mouth suited to surface and benthic feeding, and robust, cycloid scales.

Colouration in the genus is often sexually dimorphic, with males developing brighter hues during the breeding season. Pupfishes in coastal lagoonal habitats typically display an olive to tan body ground colour with darker scale margins creating a cross-hatched pattern; males in breeding condition may develop iridescent blue or turquoise flanks contrasting with an orange or yellow belly. Females are generally plainer and rounder when gravid. The caudal fin is rounded, and the dorsal and anal fins are positioned posteriorly on the body, characteristic of the family.

Habitat

Laguna Oviedo, the type locality of Cyprinodon nichollsi, is a large coastal lagoon on the southwestern coast of the Dominican Republic, within or near the Jaragua National Park. It is a hypersaline to meso-saline system with hard, alkaline water, fringed by extensive mangrove stands and subject to periodic connectivity with the sea. Water chemistry records from closely related Dominican Cyprinodon habitats in the same region — including Laguna Bávaro near Punta Cana — document pH values of 7.2–7.4, conductivity around 2,000 µS/cm, carbonate hardness of 8–9 dKH, and total hardness exceeding 26 dGH. These figures illustrate the hard, mineral-rich, brackish-influenced character of coastal lagoonal systems on Hispaniola.

The fish inhabits shallow margins of these lagoons, particularly areas with mangrove root structure, submerged aquatic vegetation, and organic debris, which provide both shelter from predators and spawning substrates. Water temperatures in Dominican coastal lagoons are warm year-round, consistent with the tropical setting. The habitat is benthopelagic and non-migratory — C. nichollsi does not undertake seasonal migrations and is confined to the lagoon complex of its type locality and immediately adjacent coastal waters.

Feeding

Cyprinodon nichollsi, like other pupfishes, is an opportunistic omnivore. The genus feeds primarily on algae, detritus, small invertebrates, and organic particles gleaned from substrate surfaces, mangrove roots, and the water column. The small, upturned mouth and relatively robust jaws allow the fish to rasp algal mats from hard substrates as well as pick invertebrates from soft sediment. In coastal lagoonal habitats, the diet likely includes abundant benthic diatoms, cyanobacterial mats, microcrustaceans, chironomid larvae, and small molluscs.

In captivity, pupfishes are easily fed and accept a wide variety of prepared foods: high-quality dried flakes and micropellets, algae wafers, frozen cyclops and daphnia, and occasional live foods. Vegetable matter in the diet — spirulina-enriched foods or blanched vegetables — helps replicate the algae-heavy component of the natural diet and maintains condition in males in particular.

Mating

Cyprinodon nichollsi is a non-annual pupfish, living in permanent or near-permanent coastal lagoon habitat rather than seasonal pools that dry completely. It is a plant and substrate spawner: pairs deposit adhesive eggs on fine-leaved vegetation, mangrove rootlets, submerged debris, or floating spawning substrates near the surface or along the bottom margins over extended periods, without the diapause phase characteristic of annual killifishes. This mode of reproduction is tied directly to the permanence of its lagoon habitat.

In pupfishes generally, males are highly territorial during the breeding season and defend small courtship territories vigorously against rival males. Breeding males perform lateral display postures and pursuits to attract females, and spawning occurs in rapid bursts within the defended territory. Because females can spawn repeatedly across weeks or months in non-annual species, populations maintain continuous low-level reproductive output rather than the concentrated seasonal mass-spawning seen in annual killifishes.

Breeding

Eggs deposited by C. nichollsi are adhesive and incubate in the water column without requiring a dry or diapause phase. Incubation times for Cyprinodon species in warm tropical water are typically short — on the order of 7–14 days depending on temperature — after which larvae hatch as small, free-swimming fry that are immediately capable of independent feeding. There is no parental care; adults do not guard eggs or fry and may consume them if given the opportunity.

In the aquarium, breeding is best encouraged in a species-specific setup with fine-leaved plants, Java moss, or synthetic spawning mops that provide egg-laying sites, and with a sex ratio of one male to two or more females to reduce the intensity of male harassment on individual females. Eggs can be collected daily and incubated separately in shallow containers with gentle aeration. Given the species' restricted natural range and its status as a Caribbean endemic, responsible captive breeding by specialist killifish keepers has conservation value as a hedge against further habitat loss.

In the aquarium

Cyprinodon nichollsi is a specialist species suited to killifish keepers rather than general community aquarists. Its requirements differ substantially from those of the soft, acidic water preferred by many popular killifishes: as a coastal lagoon pupfish it needs hard, alkaline, and slightly brackish water — target pH 7.2–8.0, total hardness above 15 dGH, and the option to add a small amount of marine salt (1–3 g/L) to replicate the brackish character of Laguna Oviedo. Temperature should be maintained in the warm tropical range of approximately 75–82 °F.

A species tank of 15–20 US gal or more is appropriate, decorated with fine-leaved plants (which tolerate slightly brackish conditions — Vallisneria, Java fern, or hornwort are suitable), some rockwork, and open sandy areas that allow males to establish visual territories. Because male pupfishes can be aggressive toward each other and toward females, the tank should provide sufficient breaks in line of sight, and the sex ratio should favour females. The species should not be mixed with other small fish that could be outcompeted or harassed.

Cyprinodon nichollsi is rarely available in the hobby and is primarily held by specialist killifish societies, where its conservation status and the interest of Caribbean pupfish biology attract dedicated keepers. Those who obtain the species are encouraged to maintain careful breeding records and avoid hybridisation with related Cyprinodon species.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Cyprinodon nichollsi as Least Concern in April 2020. While this designation suggests the species is not at immediate risk of extinction, it must be interpreted in the context of an extremely restricted range — the species is known principally from Laguna Oviedo and nearby coastal lagoons of the Dominican Republic, giving it one of the smallest natural ranges of any pupfish. Caribbean Cyprinodon are documented in global cyprinodontid reviews as having some of the smallest ranges of any animal group, and range size alone constitutes a persistent vulnerability.

The primary threats to C. nichollsi are habitat degradation and loss driven by coastal development. The Bávaro–Punta Cana corridor on Hispaniola's eastern coast, where related Dominican Cyprinodon habitats occur, has been subject to intense tourism development, and coastal lagoons have been drained, filled, or hydrologically disconnected from coastal systems in the process. Laguna Oviedo itself, as a protected area within Jaragua National Park, has some degree of formal protection, but enforcement and management resources are limited. Water extraction, altered hydrology, and the introduction of non-native fishes — particularly poeciliids used for mosquito control — are documented pressures on Caribbean endemic fishes of this type and are relevant risks for C. nichollsi. Captive insurance populations maintained by specialist killifish keepers complement in-situ protection for a species whose entire existence is confined to a single island coast.
