Girardinus creolus is a small Cuban livebearer of the highland streams, a fish far less familiar to aquarists than its showy relative the metallic livebearer (G. metallicus) and known to most people only as a name in the checklists. Endemic to the freshwaters of western Cuba, the Creole topminnow is a midwater swimmer of cool, clear, well-oxygenated mountain brooks — a quiet, undemanding poeciliid that bears live young in the family's characteristic way, fertilised internally and born free-swimming. It is a fish on which the published record is thin: solid on distribution, ecology and size, sparse on the details of its brooding and rare in the hobby.

Taxonomy & naming

Girardinus creolus was described by Samuel Garman in 1895 and is one of the Cuban members of the genus Girardinus, a small group of New World livebearers in the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, and it treats Girardinus creolus Garman, 1895 as valid within Girardinus. The species sits in the order Cyprinodontiformes, the egg-laying and live-bearing toothcarps, alongside the guppies, mollies, mosquitofishes and their relatives.

The genus Girardinus commemorates Charles Frédéric Girard (1822–1895), the French-American ichthyologist who worked as an assistant to Louis Agassiz and contributed extensively to nineteenth-century American fish taxonomy. The genus is centred on Cuba, where several species — including the well-known metallic or blackchin livebearer Girardinus metallicus — are endemic. Among these G. creolus is one of the more obscure, much less documented in the aquarium literature than its congener.

The common name recorded for the species is "Creole topminnow." As with many of the smaller Cuban poeciliids, the hobby and scientific record for G. creolus is comparatively sparse; the standard checklist authority for the family is Lucinda's 2003 treatment of the Poeciliidae in the Checklist of the Freshwater Fishes of South and Central America, which underpins the modern placement of the species.

Morphology

Girardinus creolus is a small fish that shows the marked sexual size dimorphism typical of the poeciliid livebearers. Females are markedly the larger sex, reaching about 3 in in standard length, while males and unsexed individuals reach roughly 1.5 in SL. The body is that of a typical small-stream livebearer — modest, streamlined, and built for holding position in moving water rather than for display.

The defining male feature, shared across the Poeciliidae, is the gonopodium: a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to deliver sperm to the female internally. Females lack this structure and are deeper-bodied, particularly when gravid. Detailed published descriptions of the live coloration and fine meristics of G. creolus are sparse in the cached sources, and beyond the size and the general poeciliid bauplan the species is not richly documented; where the record is thin it is better to say less than to guess at pattern or pigment.

It is described as a midwater swimmer that is never found at the surface and only seldom on the bottom, holding position over hard substrates of smooth rocks, gravel or sand. This is a cool-water, clean-water fish rather than a tolerant lowland weed — a habitat preference that sets a clear expectation for both its ecology and its care.

Reported water temperatures for the species fall in the range of about 72–79 °F. Combined with the preference for swift, clear, well-oxygenated water over hard substrate, this paints a consistent picture of a fish of clean, moving, moderately cool montane brooks rather than warm, still, vegetation-choked pools.

Feeding

In the wild Girardinus creolus is a small omnivore, feeding on algae, aquatic plants and insect larvae. That ecology points clearly to a cool-water, clean-water fish. Its natural habitat of swift, clear, cool and well-oxygenated highland streams over hard substrates of rock, gravel or sand, at roughly 72–79 °F, suggests an aquarium with good filtration and oxygenation, brisk water movement, and clean conditions rather than warm, still water. A hard substrate and open midwater swimming space would echo the stream habitat of a fish that keeps to the water column and avoids both surface and bottom.

As a small, low-trophic-level omnivore it should be undemanding to feed, and as a peaceful, harmless poeciliid it has no record of aggression. Conservation

Girardinus creolus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 29 April 2020. As a Cuban endemic that is not currently considered threatened, it carries no elevated conservation concern at the species level; it is neither listed under CITES nor under the Convention on Migratory Species.

The species' resilience is estimated as medium, with a population doubling time of roughly 1.4 to 4.4 years — a figure consistent with a small, relatively fecund livebearer. Its harmlessness and Least Concern status together describe a fish that, on present knowledge, is secure within its limited Cuban range.

That said, island-endemic stream fishes are inherently dependent on the integrity of their particular drainages, and the species' preference for clear, cool, well-oxygenated highland water makes it the kind of fish that would be sensitive to degradation of those streams. The current Least Concern listing reflects the absence of a documented threat rather than a wide or buffered distribution, and a Cuban endemic of restricted range warrants continued attention even where it is not presently at risk.
