Taxonomy & naming
Girardinus falcatus was described by Carl H. Eigenmann in 1903 from Cuban material, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Girardinus falcatus (Eigenmann, 1903) as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Girardinus within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers — and the order Cyprinodontiformes. The parenthetical authority signals that the species was originally described in a different genus and later moved to Girardinus, the arrangement under which it stands today.
The genus Girardinus is a small, distinctively Cuban radiation of livebearers, and G. falcatus is one of its better-known members in the aquarium hobby. The genus name honours Charles Frédéric Girard (1822–1895), a French-born ichthyologist and herpetologist who trained as a pupil and assistant of Louis Agassiz at Neuchâtel before following Agassiz to the United States, where he became a prolific describer of North American fishes and reptiles. The family Poeciliidae unites the guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails, mosquitofishes and their relatives — small, internally fertilising, predominantly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas — and within it Girardinus belongs to the subfamily Poeciliinae.
Morphology
Girardinus falcatus is a small fish with strong sexual size dimorphism. Males are slender and reach only about 1.5 in in standard length, while females are substantially larger and deeper-bodied, attaining roughly 3.5 in in standard length — a difference of more than twofold that is one of the most conspicuous features of the species. The body is elongate and the mouth is upturned, the build of a surface-feeding topminnow adapted to taking food from the upper water column.
Colouration is restrained compared with the gaudy fancy livebearers: the fish is broadly silvery to olive, and the common name "goldbelly topminnow" points to a yellowish or golden cast on the underside. As in all poeciliids, the defining male structure is the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin, used to transfer sperm to the female internally. Females lack this modified fin, retaining a normal fan-shaped anal fin, and when gravid show the swollen abdomen and darkened patch typical of livebearing females carrying developing young.
Habitat
Girardinus falcatus is endemic to Cuba, where it occupies a range of warm lowland fresh waters — ponds, lakes and lowland streams — at elevations from near sea level up to about 492 ft, though it is usually found below 98 ft. It is a demersal, non-migratory, freshwater fish of the tropical lowlands, and it favours stagnant or slow-moving water over muddy substrate with abundant aquatic vegetation, the dense weed beds that give small surface-dwelling livebearers both food and cover.
The species is thermally a warm-water fish, recorded across roughly 75–86 °F in the wild; specialist hobby accounts note that while many Cuban Girardinus populations sit in the mid-20s Celsius, some occupy water running into the high 20s and low 30s, consistent with the upper end of the FishBase range. This preference for warm, still, heavily planted lowland water — rather than cool, fast, open streams — shapes both where the fish lives in Cuba and how it is best kept in the aquarium.
Feeding
In the wild Girardinus falcatus is largely a herbivore and detritivore with a low trophic level (about 2.2), feeding on diatoms, algae, the leaves of aquatic plants, detritus and insect larvae. The upturned mouth and surface orientation suit a fish that grazes on algal films, picks at plant material, and takes small invertebrates and larvae from the water's surface and among vegetation. The strong plant-and-detritus component of the diet is typical of the small weed-bed livebearers and distinguishes the species from the more strongly carnivorous poeciliids.
In the aquarium this translates into an easy, undemanding feeder that does best on a varied diet with a clear vegetable share. Good-quality flake and micro-pellets with algal or spirulina content, supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, keep the fish in condition; some algae and biofilm in a planted tank is grazed naturally. Several small feedings suit a small, near-constant grazer better than one large meal, and as with most small livebearers overfeeding is the more common husbandry error than underfeeding.
Mating
Reproduction in Girardinus falcatus is internal, as in all poeciliids. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ; fertilisation takes place inside the female, who then carries the developing embryos to term rather than laying eggs. Males do not build nests or defend territories — instead they pursue females and attempt to inseminate them, the persistent courtship-and-pursuit pattern characteristic of livebearers.
As is general among poeciliids, females can store viable sperm internally and may produce more than one brood from a single mating, so a female removed from males can continue to deliver young for some time. Detailed population-level data on courtship display, female choice and superfetation in G. falcatus specifically are sparse in the accessible literature, and this account stays conservative on those points rather than transferring assumptions wholesale from better-studied relatives such as the guppy; what is well established is the internal-fertilisation, gonopodium-mediated mating system shared across the family.
Breeding
Girardinus falcatus is a viviparous livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. After a gestation of roughly 25 days the female delivers a brood of about 10 to 40 fully formed fry, the brood size scaling with the size and condition of the (much larger) female. The species breeds readily and, like other small livebearers, is regarded as prolific and easy to reproduce in captivity, which is much of its appeal to livebearer keepers.
The newborn fry are miniature, independent fish able to swim and feed immediately, and they need cover from the outset: adults — including the mother — will eat fry given the chance, so dense planting, floating cover, or moving gravid females to a separate, well-planted tank improves survival. Fry grow on finely powdered foods, infusoria and newly hatched brine shrimp, and males begin to show the developing gonopodium within a few weeks as they mature. The combination of warm water, planted cover and a varied diet is enough to keep a colony reproducing steadily; population control, not coaxing the fish to spawn, is usually the real management task.
In the aquarium
Girardinus falcatus is a peaceful, hardy, undemanding livebearer well suited to a planted community or a dedicated livebearer tank. Specialist hobby accounts describe the Cuban topminnows as easy, forgiving fish that reproduce readily and do well in planted aquaria — the kind of livebearer that rewards stable, clean water more than precise chemistry. As a surface-and-midwater shoaling fish it is best kept in a group, and because males pursue females, a ratio skewed toward females reduces harassment of any single fish.
Water should reflect the species' warm, weedy lowland origins: temperatures broadly in the mid-20s to high-20s Celsius (around 75–86 °F), with plenty of plant cover and gentle filtration to suit a fish from still and slow waters. Hard, neutral-to-alkaline water of the sort common across the Caribbean lowlands suits it, though it is tolerant rather than demanding on this point. It is peaceful and makes a poor target for fin-nippers only in the sense that it has no long finnage to damage; very large or boisterous tankmates are unsuitable, but among similarly sized peaceful community fish and other livebearers it is an easy, productive resident.
Conservation
Girardinus falcatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 30 April 2020). As a Cuban endemic with a low trophic level, broad tolerance of warm lowland still waters, and an easy, prolific live-bearing habit, the species is not currently considered to face a significant threat at the species level, and it remains a familiar fish in the livebearer-keeping hobby.
That said, the conservation calculus for a single-island endemic differs from that of a widespread species: a fish restricted to Cuba's lowland fresh waters depends on the continued health of those particular pond, lake and lowland-stream habitats, which are vulnerable to pollution, drainage, and the introduction of non-native fishes. Maintaining accurately identified, well-documented aquarium populations of Cuban Girardinus is one of the quiet services the specialist hobby provides for endemic livebearers, and — as with all livebearers — keepers should never release surplus fish into local waters outside the native range, where adaptable poeciliids establish themselves all too readily.
