Taxonomy & naming
Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis was described by Bruce B. Collette in 1991, in the course of Anderson and Collette's revision of the freshwater viviparous halfbeaks of the genus Hemirhamphodon (Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters 2(2):151–176). The species epithet kapuasensis records the type locality: the Kapuas River drainage of West Kalimantan, Borneo, the river system to which the fish is endemic. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis Collette, 1991 as the valid name.
The genus Hemirhamphodon belongs to the family Zenarchopteridae, the internally fertilising halfbeaks of South-East Asia, within the order Beloniformes — the same broad lineage that contains the needlefishes, flyingfishes and other halfbeaks. Older literature placed these freshwater halfbeaks in the family Hemiramphidae, and references to that family persist in databases; the modern arrangement separates the live-bearing Asian freshwater halfbeaks into Zenarchopteridae. Within the genus, H. kapuasensis is a smaller relative of the more familiar bearded halfbeak, Hemirhamphodon pogonognathus, from which it can be told apart by its size and by its distinctive red flank striping.
The genus name is built from Greek roots — hemi (half), rhamphos (bill or beak) and odous (tooth) — describing the toothed, half-length beak formed by the prolonged lower jaw that characterises these fishes.
Morphology
Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis is a small, elongate, surface-oriented halfbeak reaching about 2 in in length. Its body is slender and pike-like in profile, and like all members of its tribe it carries the prolonged lower jaw — the "half beak" — that gives the group its name, while the upper jaw remains short. The dorsal fin is set far back on the body, with roughly 18 to 21 rays, and the anal fin lies beneath the dorsal-fin rays; vertebrae number around 38 to 40, and predorsal scales 35 to 43, characters used in the original revision to separate the species of the genus.
The feature that sets this species apart visually is its colour. Where many freshwater halfbeaks are plainly silvery, H. kapuasensis carries an irregular series of red stripes that form a band along each flank, running from behind the eye back toward the base of the tail. This red striping makes it, by reputation, among the most attractive of the freshwater halfbeaks, and is the basis of its hobby name, the red-striped halfbeak.
As in the rest of the genus, males are equipped with a modified anal fin — an andropodium — used as an intromittent organ to transfer sperm internally to the female, a structure analogous in function to the gonopodium of the New World poeciliid livebearers though derived independently. Detailed published notes on the species are sparse, so finer points of its sexual dimorphism beyond the male's modified fin are not well documented.
Habitat
The species is endemic to the Kapuas River of West Kalimantan, Borneo — the longest river in Indonesia — where it lives in fresh and slightly brackish waters. FishBase records it as a freshwater and brackish, pelagic, tropical fish occupying the upper part of the water column, consistent with its build as a surface-feeding halfbeak that patrols just beneath the film.
Like other freshwater halfbeaks of the region, it is a fish of warm, soft, often tannin-stained lowland waters, the slow streams and channels of a great tropical river basin. Specific published measurements of temperature, pH and hardness from its wild habitat are not readily available, so the water values given here are drawn from general practice with the genus rather than from site data for this species — an honest case of data being sparse.
Hobbyist accounts note that the species tolerates a range of conditions, adapting to fresh or slightly brackish water at low specific gravity, a tolerance shared with several halfbeaks that range into estuarine reaches of their home rivers.
Feeding
Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis is a surface and mid-water micro-predator. The elongated, toothed lower jaw is the working tool of a fish that takes small prey at or just below the water's surface, and in the wild its diet consists of small invertebrates and insect material drifting in the upper water column, in keeping with a modelled trophic level near 3.1.
In the aquarium it takes small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm is noted as a particular favourite — and as a surface-oriented feeder it is most comfortable taking food from the top of the tank, though keepers report it will follow sinking bloodworm offered carefully, even from forceps. Over time individuals may learn to accept small pellets and good-quality flake, but live and frozen foods remain the dependable basis of its diet.
Because it feeds at the surface and is built for small, frequent prey rather than large mouthfuls, modest regular feedings suit it better than occasional large meals, and a varied menu of small foods keeps it in good condition.
Mating
Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis is internally fertilising, the defining reproductive trait of the family Zenarchopteridae. Rather than scattering eggs to be fertilised in open water, the male transfers sperm directly to the female using a modified anal fin — the andropodium — formed from elongated and specialised fin rays. This places the species among the small minority of fishes worldwide that practise internal fertilisation, and makes the Asian freshwater halfbeaks a striking parallel to the New World poeciliid livebearers, which evolved the same habit independently.
Detailed observations of courtship in this particular species are scarce in the literature. In the genus more broadly, internal fertilisation implies close-range pairing between male and female, with the male manoeuvring to bring the andropodium into contact, rather than the broadcast spawning of egg-laying fishes. Where the published record is thin, it is more responsible to note that the fine details of this species' mating behaviour are not well documented than to assume them from relatives.
Breeding
FishBase records Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis as viviparous — the females bear live young — following internal fertilisation by the male. The genus Hemirhamphodon is unusual even among the live-bearing halfbeaks: some of its members are true viviparous livebearers that nourish developing embryos and give birth to free-swimming young, distinguishing them from the egg-retaining (ovoviviparous to oviparous) reproductive modes seen elsewhere in the Zenarchopteridae.
Specific figures for this species — gestation length, brood size, and the frequency of broods — are not well established in the available sources, so they are left unstated here rather than guessed. As in other livebearing halfbeaks, the young are expected to be born as fully formed miniatures able to swim and feed at once, a developmental pattern that, like the internal fertilisation that precedes it, mirrors the strategy of the poeciliids despite the two groups' separate evolutionary origins.
There is no published indication of superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some poeciliids — for this species, and it should not be assumed. Captive breeding of the species is not commonly reported, reflecting how infrequently it reaches the trade.
In the aquarium
This is a halfbeak for the patient, experienced keeper rather than the beginner. It is only infrequently imported, and hobbyist accounts describe it as somewhat delicate during its first few days after introduction, when it is most at risk. Its chief vulnerability is behavioural: like other halfbeaks it is easily startled and prone to jumping or dashing into the glass, and the resulting snout injuries are slow to heal and prone to fungal or bacterial infection. A securely covered tank, calm surroundings and gentle handling are therefore essential.
The species does best in a quiet single-species setup or with very peaceful, non-competitive tankmates — small, calm companions such as neon tetras or small rasboras rather than boisterous or fin-nipping fish. Floating plants such as duckweed or hornwort help it settle by breaking up the surface and giving it cover and a sense of security, which in turn reduces the panic-jumping that is its main risk. Water chemistry is reported to be relatively forgiving, the fish adapting to fresh or slightly brackish water at low specific gravity, but stability and a calm environment matter more than precise numbers.
Given its surface-feeding habits, a tank with a generous surface area suits it better than a tall, narrow one, and a securely fitting lid is non-negotiable for a fish this ready to leap.
Conservation
Hemirhamphodon kapuasensis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, with the assessment dated 14 January 2020 (IUCN species ID 90986392). FishBase likewise rates it of low fishing vulnerability and harmless to humans.
As a Least Concern species it is not currently considered at significant risk of extinction. That status should be read, however, against the species' very restricted range: it is endemic to a single river system, the Kapuas of West Kalimantan, and narrowly distributed endemics of South-East Asian lowland rivers are exposed to the broad regional pressures of habitat alteration, deforestation, agriculture and water-quality decline that affect Borneo's freshwaters generally.
For aquarists, the species is best regarded as an uncommon specialist import rather than a routinely traded fish, and its limited natural range is reason to value wild populations and the integrity of the Kapuas basin that sustains them.
