Hemirhamphodon kecil is a diminutive freshwater halfbeak from the lower Mahakam basin of East Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo, described as recently as 2013. Its specific epithet — kecil, the Malay and Indonesian word for "small" — is well earned: at roughly 1.5 in in standard length it is the smallest member of its genus, a surface-schooling toothcarp that hangs beneath overhanging bank vegetation in clear, neutral forest streams. Like the other Bornean and Sundaic halfbeaks of the family Zenarchopteridae, it abandons the egg-laying habits of marine halfbeaks for internal fertilisation and live birth, making it one of the lesser-known live-bearing fishes that share the aquarist's attention with the more familiar guppies and mollies.

Taxonomy & naming

Hemirhamphodon kecil was described by Heok Hui Tan and Kelvin K. P. Lim in 2013, in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, as one of three new Bornean species of the genus erected in that paper. The type material came from the lower Mahakam basin of East Kalimantan, and the fish is catalogued in FishBase under SpecCode 67145. It belongs to the order Beloniformes and the family Zenarchopteridae — the internally fertilising halfbeaks of fresh and brackish South-East Asian waters — which is distinct from the egg-scattering marine halfbeaks of the family Hemiramphidae.

The genus name Hemirhamphodon is built from the Greek hemi (half), rhamphos (bill or beak) and odous (teeth), referring to the toothed, elongated lower jaw that gives halfbeaks their name. The epithet kecil is the Malay and Indonesian word for "small," chosen because the fish is the smallest known species of the genus, maturing at a size at which its congeners are still juveniles. Catalog of Fishes recognises Hemirhamphodon kecil Tan & Lim, 2013 as the valid name.

The species is diagnosed by a combination of small adult size — to about 1.5 in standard length — and the near-absence of body and fin markings, set off only by sparse black pigment on the dorsal part of the caudal-fin base in both sexes and a black-suffused dorsal-fin submargin. Meristic counts recorded for the species include 14 to 15 dorsal soft rays, 8 anal soft rays, and 39 to 41 vertebrae.

Morphology

Hemirhamphodon kecil is a slender, elongate surface fish with the characteristic halfbeak profile: a fixed, prolonged lower jaw projecting well beyond a short upper jaw, and a body built for hanging just below the water's surface. At a maximum of around 1.5 in standard length it is the smallest species in its genus, and unusually among Hemirhamphodon the two sexes reach broadly similar adult sizes — in most congeners males grow substantially larger, sometimes up to half again the female length.

The species is notably plain. Discernible body and fin markings are largely absent; the most reliable pigment cues are a sparse scatter of black on the upper part of the caudal-fin base, present in both sexes, and a dark suffusion along the submargin of the dorsal fin. The pelvic-fin origin lies anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, a positional character used in distinguishing the species.

As in other internally fertilising halfbeaks, the males are set apart by modified anal-fin structures used in insemination. In H. kecil the fourth anal-fin ray bears an enlarged posterior projection — part of the andropodium-like apparatus that, like the gonopodium of poeciliid livebearers, channels sperm to the female. Beyond this the sexes are difficult to tell apart on size alone, which is one of the species' diagnostic peculiarities.

Habitat

The species is known from the lower Mahakam basin of East Kalimantan, in Indonesian Borneo — a drainage that runs eastward into the Makassar Strait. It is a strictly freshwater, pelagic fish of lowland tropical streams, recorded from clear water of around pH 7.0 over substrata of rock, sand and silt, in reaches lined with submerged and overhanging bank vegetation.

Hemirhamphodon kecil is a surface specialist that forms small, loose schools — typically only three to five individuals — drifting at the top of the water column. It favours quiet pools and the calmer margins of streams, sheltering near or directly beneath overhanging marginal plants that provide both cover and a steady supply of small surface prey. This preference for shaded, still surface water close to the bank is typical of the smaller forest halfbeaks.

FishBase records the species as syntopic with a varied community of other lowland Bornean fishes, including Osteochilus vittatus, Rasbora elegans, Systomus binotatus, the wild betta Betta patoti, the three-spot gourami Trichopodus trichopterus, and the predatory snakehead Channa lucius — a fauna that situates H. kecil in clear, vegetated, slow-flowing forest waters rather than open rivers.

Feeding

Hemirhamphodon kecil is a surface-feeding micro-predator, occupying the trophic niche typical of small halfbeaks, with a trophic level estimated at about 3.1. Its upturned, prolonged lower jaw and surface-hugging posture are adapted to taking small prey from the surface film and the topmost layer of the water column — chiefly tiny aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates and insects that fall or alight on the water beneath the overhanging vegetation it shelters in.

Specific dietary data for this 2013-described species are sparse, but its morphology and behaviour place it firmly among the insectivorous, top-feeding halfbeaks rather than among bottom-grazers or generalist omnivores. The habit of schooling beneath bank vegetation almost certainly reflects a feeding strategy built around drifting and falling invertebrates concentrated at the margins of quiet pools.

In captivity, halfbeaks of this type take small live and frozen surface foods, and a fish of this size would require correspondingly tiny prey. Detailed husbandry feeding records for H. kecil specifically have not been published, so any aquarium regime is best inferred from the broader halfbeak literature and the species' wild surface-insectivore habits.

Mating

Hemirhamphodon kecil is an internally fertilising, live-bearing halfbeak — one of the Zenarchopteridae, in which fertilisation occurs inside the female and embryos develop within her body, in contrast to the egg-scattering marine halfbeaks. Insemination is achieved not with the rod-like gonopodium of poeciliids but with a modified anal-fin apparatus; in H. kecil the males carry an enlarged posterior projection on the fourth anal-fin ray, the species' counterpart to the intromittent organs of other livebearers.

Reproductive behaviour has not been observed in this particular species, but the genus offers context. In Hemirhamphodon, unlike the related Dermogenys and Nomorhamphus where females tend to be the larger sex, males equal or exceed females in size — a pattern consistent with H. kecil's similar-sized sexes. Male halfbeaks in this group often defend territories and may carry conspicuous fleshy lappets or appendages on the lower jaw that figure in male–male contests and, very likely, in female mate choice, while females are comparatively peaceful.

No such elaborate jaw ornamentation has been emphasised for the plain-bodied H. kecil, and species-level courtship details remain undocumented. What can be said confidently is that mating is internal and that the male's modified anal fin is the functional centre of it; the finer behaviour is, for now, data sparse.

Breeding

As an internally fertilising halfbeak, Hemirhamphodon kecil reproduces by live birth. Following internal fertilisation, the embryos develop within the female and she releases free-swimming young rather than laying eggs — the "viviparous" pattern long associated with the freshwater halfbeaks of South-East Asia.

Hemirhamphodon, like halfbeaks generally, produces small broods of relatively large, well-developed fry, trading fecundity for the size and readiness of each offspring. Newborn halfbeak fry are comparatively advanced and, in related forms, may remain near the mother for some time after birth. Precise brood sizes, gestation length and reproductive interval for H. kecil itself have not been reported in the literature available, so quantitative breeding figures are best left unstated rather than guessed.

Superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages — is documented in some halfbeak and poeciliid lineages, but it has not been specifically demonstrated for H. kecil and should not be assumed. As a recently described and little-studied species, its detailed reproductive biology remains one of the clearer gaps in what is known about it.

In the aquarium

Hemirhamphodon kecil is a rarely encountered species in the hobby, and no dedicated species-level aquarium account has been published; care guidance must be extrapolated cautiously from the broader halfbeak literature and from the conditions recorded at its type locality. The governing principle is to reproduce its wild setting: clear, neutral water around pH 7.0, warm tropical temperatures, a fine substrate, and generous overhanging or marginal vegetation under which a small, peaceful surface school can shelter.

Halfbeaks as a group are sensitive surface dwellers. They favour well-oxygenated, gently moving, clean water, are easily unsettled by a thick surface film, and are notorious jumpers — a tight-fitting cover is essential. Being obligate top-feeders, they take small live and frozen foods presented at the surface, and a fish as small as H. kecil needs correspondingly tiny prey. It is best kept in a small group, in keeping with the loose three-to-five-fish schools seen in the wild.

Given its surface-specialist habits, jumpiness, small size and the absence of established husbandry records, this is not a beginner's livebearer in the way a guppy is. It is better regarded as a specialist subject for an aquarist prepared to match its narrow wild requirements; concrete aquarium data for the species remain sparse.

Conservation

Hemirhamphodon kecil is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, listed under criterion D2 (IUCN species id 90986405), with the assessment dated 14 January 2020. Criterion D2 applies to species with a very restricted distribution or small number of locations, such that a plausible future threat could drive them to Critically Endangered or Extinct in a short time — a listing that reflects the species' narrow known range in the lower Mahakam basin rather than any documented population crash.

The species has not been evaluated under CITES or the CMS. As a freshwater fish confined to a single Bornean drainage, its principal vulnerability lies in the fate of its lowland-forest stream habitat: clearance of bank vegetation, alteration of clear forest waters, and the broader pressures on East Kalimantan's lowland river systems all bear directly on a fish so dependent on shaded, vegetated stream margins.

Because the species was described only in 2013 and is little studied, conservation knowledge is correspondingly thin. The Vulnerable listing flags a genuinely range-restricted fish that warrants attention to its habitat, even in the absence of detailed population monitoring.
