Heterandria tuxtlaensis is a small, recently described livebearer known from one place on earth: the volcanic crater lake of Catemaco and the tributaries above the falls at El Salto de Eyipantla, in the Tuxtla Mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. Named in 2008 by McEachran and Dewitt and placed in the same genus as the famous dwarf least killifish, it is a microendemic of the Los Tuxtlas region — a fish whose entire world is a single lake system, and one for which careful, primary-source-based description matters more than the abundant but unreliable hobby chatter that surrounds better-known poeciliids.

Taxonomy & naming

Heterandria tuxtlaensis was described in 2008 by John D. McEachran and Thomas J. Dewitt in the journal Zootaxa, in a paper titled "A new livebearing fish, Heterandria tuxtlaensis, from Lake Catemaco, Veracruz, Mexico (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae)." The species is placed in the order Cyprinodontiformes, family Poeciliidae, and subfamily Poeciliinae — the New World livebearing toothcarps. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, and the 2008 Zootaxa description remains the primary reference for essentially all of the fish's morphological and reproductive detail.

The genus Heterandria takes its name from the Greek heteros, meaning "other" or "different," combined with andros, "male" — a reference to the distinctive males of these livebearers, whose modified anal fin sets them apart. The specific epithet tuxtlaensis is geographic, honouring the type and only known locality: the Tuxtla Mountains (Los Tuxtlas) of Veracruz. The genus Heterandria is best known to hobbyists through Heterandria formosa, the dwarf least killifish of the southeastern United States — one of the smallest fishes in the world — and the placement of the Catemaco species alongside it links a Mexican microendemic to that well-studied congener.

The North American Native Fishes Association (NANFA) checklist lists the species as Heterandria tuxtlaensis McEachran & DeWitt 2008 with the common name "Tuxtlas Killifish," placing it among Mexican Poeciliidae alongside other Lake Catemaco endemics such as Poeciliopsis catemaco. FishBase flags the species as endemic to Mexico in the national freshwater fish checklist.

Morphology

Heterandria tuxtlaensis is a small poeciliid. The type description reports a maximum recorded length of about 3 in SL for the largest measured specimen, placing it among the modest-sized members of its family; as with poeciliids generally, females tend to be the larger and deeper-bodied sex while males remain smaller. Detailed meristic and morphometric characters — fin-ray counts, scale rows, and the precise form of the male copulatory organ — are set out in the original 2008 Zootaxa account, which is the authority for any such figure.

The defining structure of a male poeciliid is the gonopodium, an intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin and used to transfer sperm to the female internally. In Heterandria and its relatives the detailed architecture of the gonopodium — the hooks, spines and segments at its tip — is a key diagnostic feature distinguishing species, and it is on such characters that the description of H. tuxtlaensis rests. Beyond the type description, fine morphological and colour detail for this species is sparse in the wider literature.

Because the species is known only from its type series and the original publication, this profile deliberately avoids asserting specific colour-pattern or proportion details that are not anchored in that source. Where the hobby literature is silent or unreliable, the conservative position — saying less rather than guessing — is the correct one for a microendemic of this kind.

Habitat

Heterandria tuxtlaensis is endemic to the Lake Catemaco system in the Tuxtla Mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. Lake Catemaco is a large freshwater crater lake set within the Los Tuxtlas volcanic field and biosphere reserve — a warm, subtropical body of water at the heart of one of Mexico's most distinctive endemic-rich freshwater regions. The species occurs in the lake itself and in tributaries of the lake and of the Rio Grande de Catemaco above the falls at El Salto de Eyipantla, the waterfall barrier that helps isolate the upstream fauna.

FishBase characterises the environment as freshwater, pelagic, and subtropical. The warm waters of the Los Tuxtlas lowlands, the volcanic geology of the crater lake, and the barrier role of the El Salto de Eyipantla falls together define a tightly bounded range: this is a fish of one lake and the streams immediately associated with it. That restriction is the single most important fact about its ecology.

Precise in-situ water chemistry figures (temperature range, pH, hardness) specific to the microhabitats of H. tuxtlaensis are not well documented in the accessible literature, and are not asserted here beyond the general subtropical, warm-freshwater character of the Catemaco system. The lake's setting within the Los Tuxtlas biosphere means the surrounding habitat is comparatively protected, but the fish's distribution remains genuinely narrow.

Feeding

FishBase estimates a trophic level of roughly 2.9 for the species, derived from its size and from relatives — a figure consistent with a small omnivore that takes a mixed diet of plant and animal matter rather than a strict carnivore or herbivore.

By analogy with other small Heterandria and poeciliids of similar size and habitat, the species would be expected to graze on algae, detritus and biofilm and to take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other micro-prey from the water column and substrate. This is, however, inference from the genus and family rather than a documented observation for H. tuxtlaensis, and it should be read as such.

In the absence of a primary feeding study, the responsible summary is simply that this is a small, generalist livebearer of a warm subtropical lake, most likely an opportunistic omnivore. Any more specific claim about prey preferences or seasonal diet shifts would not trace to a verifiable source.

Mating

Like all poeciliids, Heterandria tuxtlaensis reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male uses his gonopodium — the rod-like organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — to transfer sperm to the female, so there is no external spawning and no egg-laying in the conventional sense. Males of livebearing toothcarps typically court females and, in many genera, also make rapid "sneak" mating attempts, though the specific mating behaviour of this species has not been described in detail.

The genus Heterandria is biologically notable for reproductive specialisations documented most thoroughly in its congener Heterandria formosa, which exhibits superfetation — the ability of a female to carry multiple broods at different stages of development simultaneously — together with matrotrophy, the provisioning of developing embryos through a placenta-like transfer of nutrients during gestation rather than relying on a yolk reserve alone. Whether H. tuxtlaensis shares these traits to the same degree is not confirmed in the accessible literature and should not be assumed without a primary source.

What can be stated with confidence is the general poeciliid pattern: internal fertilisation via the gonopodium, the capacity of females to store sperm, and live birth of fully formed young. The finer reproductive biology specific to the Catemaco species rests with the 2008 type description and any subsequent study, and is treated here as data-sparse.

Breeding

Heterandria tuxtlaensis is viviparous — a livebearer that gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos through gestation and releases miniature, fully formed fish able to swim and feed from birth, the reproductive mode shared across the Poeciliidae.

Brood sizes in the genus Heterandria are generally small, and where superfetation occurs — as it does in H. formosa — females release small numbers of young over an extended period rather than a single large brood at intervals. For an aquarist, the practical expectation is that of a small livebearer: females produce modest numbers of comparatively large, well-developed fry, and newborns benefit from dense cover. But because hard data is lacking, anyone breeding this species should treat published genus-level patterns as a guide rather than a guarantee and record their own observations carefully.

In the aquarium

Heterandria tuxtlaensis is not a common aquarium fish. No dedicated hobby care page for the species could be located, and searches for husbandry information return mainly its congener Heterandria formosa; species-specific care data is genuinely sparse. Any account of keeping this fish therefore leans on general principles for small warm-water poeciliids rather than on tested, species-specific practice.

As a small livebearer from a warm subtropical lake system, it would be expected to do best in a planted aquarium with stable, warm freshwater, gentle flow, and plenty of cover for fry — conditions that suit small Heterandria and similar livebearers generally. A modest, well-planted tank with a group of fish, skewed toward females to spread out male attention, follows the usual poeciliid template. Precise temperature and chemistry targets specific to this species are not documented and are not asserted here.

The more important point is conservation-minded: this is a single-lake endemic of restricted range, so any aquarium stock should be of known, responsibly sourced origin, and fish should never be released into local waters. For most keepers the species will be of interest chiefly as a curiosity of the Los Tuxtlas fauna rather than as a readily available community fish.

Heterandria tuxtlaensis has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is therefore listed as Not Evaluated (NE); no dedicated assessment or numeric Red List page exists for the species as of the data current in FishBase. The absence of a formal category, however, should not be mistaken for an absence of concern. As a microendemic restricted to a single lake system — Lake Catemaco and its immediate tributaries above the El Salto de Eyipantla falls — the species is inherently conservation-sensitive: a narrow range concentrates risk, and localised threats such as water-quality decline, introduced species, or disturbance of the lake could affect the entire global population at once. Endemic-rich crater-lake systems of this kind are precisely the settings where unassessed species can slip toward decline unnoticed.

That the lake lies within the Los Tuxtlas biosphere reserve offers some habitat protection, but a single-locality distribution remains a vulnerability in itself. The appropriate stance is precautionary: treat H. tuxtlaensis as a range-restricted endemic deserving of monitoring despite its lack of a formal IUCN category, and avoid any aquarium practice — particularly the release of fish into local waters — that could threaten native populations.
