Taxonomy & naming
Heterandria attenuata was described by Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey in 1979, in Rosen's monograph on the systematics of the poeciliid fishes published in the Bulletin of the American Museum of Natural History (volume 162, article 5, page 315). The holotype (AMNH 36332), with paratype series held at the American Museum of Natural History and the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology, came from the Río Candelaria Yalicar, taken roughly halfway between the river's source and mouth in Alta Verapaz, Guatemala. The species sits in the family Poeciliidae, subfamily Poeciliinae — the internally fertilising, mostly live-bearing toothcarps of the Americas.
The genus name Heterandria derives from the Greek heteros, "other" or "different," and andros, "male," a reference to the distinctive modified anal-fin structure (the gonopodium) that characterises male poeciliids. The specific epithet attenuata is Latin for "slender" or "tapered," describing the fish's attenuate body form, while the common name Yalicar toothcarp points directly to the type locality on the Candelaria Yalicar.
The genus placement of this species has since changed. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, now treats the species as valid under the combination Pseudoxiphophorus attenuatus (Rosen & Bailey, 1979), following a line of work (Radda 1985; Meyer 2015; Huber 2019; Barrientos and colleagues 2023) that recognised Pseudoxiphophorus as distinct from Heterandria. Readers will therefore find the same fish under both names in the literature; the genus has moved, but the species and its authorship are unchanged.
Morphology
Heterandria attenuata is a small poeciliid. FishBase records a maximum standard length of about 2.5 in for males or unsexed individuals and around 3 in for females, the larger female size being typical of live-bearing toothcarps, in which females are generally bigger and deeper-bodied than males. The body is slender and tapered — the trait that gives the species its epithet attenuata — consistent with a small stream-dwelling livebearer.
As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ in the structure of the anal fin.
