Taxonomy & naming
Ilyodon furcidens was described by David Starr Jordan and Charles Henry Gilbert in 1882, in their catalogue of fishes collected by John Xantus at Cape San Lucas and elsewhere in western Mexico, published in the Proceedings of the United States National Museum. The species belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, the family Goodeidae — the splitfins, a family endemic to the highlands and Pacific drainages of Mexico — and within it to the subfamily Goodeinae, the livebearing goodeids. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Ilyodon furcidens (Jordan & Gilbert, 1882) as the valid name for the species.
The genus name Ilyodon combines the Greek roots ilyos, meaning mud, with odous, tooth, while the specific epithet furcidens means "forked teeth" — a reference to the bicuspid, forked teeth that characterise the genus. These distinctive teeth, set in jaws adapted for grazing, are a useful diagnostic feature. The genus Ilyodon has long been taxonomically troublesome: populations vary considerably across the range in body form and dentition, and the species has at times been treated as encompassing forms described under other names. The Goodeid Working Group lists this taxon as "Ilyodon furcidens (incl. parts of xantusi)," reflecting that some material once attributed to the nominal Ilyodon xantusi falls within the variable, widespread furcidens.
In English the fish is known as the goldbreast splitfin, and in the hobby it also circulates under the trade names trout goodeid and gold-breasted goodeid. Its Mexican name is mexclapique de Armeria, after the Armería river basin, though this is often rendered erroneously as "mexcalpique."
Morphology
The goldbreast splitfin is a moderately sized, fairly deep-bodied goodeid built for life in flowing water. Females are the larger sex, reaching about 3.5 in in total length, while males stay smaller, to roughly 3 in. The body is sturdy and somewhat compressed, tapering to a well-developed caudal fin suited to holding station in current — the "trout" of the trade name is a nod to that streamlined, riffle-dwelling habit.
The species is sexually dimorphic. Mature males develop the golden-yellow breast and flank coloration that gives the fish its common name, the warm pigment concentrated along the lower body and intensifying when a male is in display or breeding condition. Females are larger, plainer and more uniformly olive or grey, lacking the gold wash. As in all goodeids, the male's anal fin is modified into an andropodium — the first few rays are shortened and notched but the fin is not drawn into the long rod-like gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers; instead the andropodium is a comparatively short, partly divided structure (the "split fin" that gives the family its English name) used to transfer sperm.
The mouth bears the forked, bicuspid teeth that define the genus, set in jaws adapted for rasping algae and biofilm from rock and substrate. Across its range the species is notably variable, with populations differing in proportions and dental detail — variation that has repeatedly complicated its taxonomy.
Habitat
Ilyodon furcidens is endemic to the Pacific slope of west-central Mexico, occurring in the Ameca–Magdalena and Armería–Coahuayana river systems across the states of Jalisco, Colima and Michoacán. Documented collection points span a wide spread of localities, including the Río Ameca, Río Ayuquila, Río de las Bolas, Arroyo de Ávalos, Río Jiquilpan, the Barranca de la Tía Barragana near Comala, the spring effluent at Agua Fría, the Río Hondo and the Arroyo El Limón. This broad, multi-basin distribution is the reason the species remains secure where so many of its goodeid relatives, confined to single springs or lakes, have declined.
The fish inhabits the pools and riffles of streams ranging from clear to turbid, over substrates of sand, silt and mud — habitat it shares with its sister species Ilyodon whitei. It is a demersal, current-loving fish that favours moving water and benefits from the oxygenation and food that riffles provide. FishBase records a temperature range of about 75–81 °F for the species in nature, though it occupies upland and spring-fed waters and tolerates distinctly cooler conditions; hobbyist keepers find it does well, and often best, at cooler temperatures than most tropical livebearers.
The waters of its range tend toward the hard and alkaline, and the species is adapted to that chemistry. Its tolerance of variable turbidity and temperature, combined with its presence across two river systems, makes it one of the more resilient and adaptable members of an otherwise fragile family.
Feeding
The goldbreast splitfin is fundamentally a grazer. FishBase places it at a low trophic level of around 2.0, reflecting a diet built largely on algae and the biofilm of aufwuchs that coats rocks and substrate in its stream habitat. The genus's forked, bicuspid teeth are the tool for this work, allowing the fish to rasp algal growth and associated micro-organisms from hard surfaces in the riffles and pool margins where it feeds.
In practice the species is an omnivore leaning strongly herbivorous, taking small invertebrates and other animal matter opportunistically alongside its staple plant and algal food. This dietary balance is typical of the algae-grazing goodeids and shapes its care in captivity.
In the aquarium it accepts a wide range of foods readily. Keepers report good results with vegetable- and algae-based prepared foods — spirulina flakes and the like — supplemented with standard dry foods and a share of live or frozen items such as Daphnia and brine shrimp. A diet weighted toward vegetable matter suits the fish's natural grazing physiology, supports good colour and condition, and helps avoid the digestive problems that an over-rich, meat-heavy diet can cause in a herbivore-leaning species.
Mating
Reproduction in Ilyodon furcidens is internal and viviparous, as in all goodeids, but it differs in a key respect from the more familiar poeciliid livebearers such as guppies and mollies. The male does not possess the long, rod-like gonopodium of the poeciliids; instead his anal fin is modified into a shorter, partly divided andropodium — the structure behind the family name "splitfins." Fertilisation is internal: the male uses the andropodium to transfer sperm to the female during a brief, close approach rather than the extended chases of guppy courtship.
Males in breeding condition display their golden breast and flank coloration to females, the warm pigment serving as a courtship signal. Pairing is comparatively peaceful by livebearer standards, though males will compete and display among themselves. Unlike the poeciliids, female goodeids do not store sperm for months across multiple broods; each brood generally follows its own mating, so a settled, mixed group is the surest route to consistent reproduction.
Goodeids also lack the superfetation seen in some livebearers — that is, females do not carry several broods at overlapping stages of development simultaneously. A female gestates a single cohort of embryos at a time, bringing them to a well-developed, free-swimming stage before giving birth.
Breeding
The defining feature of goodeid reproduction, and of Ilyodon furcidens, is true placental viviparity. After internal fertilisation the embryos develop inside the female and are nourished matrotrophically — that is, by the mother directly rather than from a stored yolk. The developing young draw nutrients through trophotaeniae, ribbon-like external structures that extend from the gut region of the embryo and function as a placenta-like organ, absorbing nourishment from the maternal tissues. This is a fundamentally different and more advanced form of livebearing than the egg-yolk-dependent (lecithotrophic) development of guppies.
Gestation lasts roughly six to eight weeks. Because each fry is sustained by the mother throughout, broods are modest in number but the young are large and well developed at birth — commonly on the order of ten to thirty fry, far fewer than a guppy produces but each substantially bigger and hardier. Newborns are free-swimming immediately and large enough to take newly hatched brine shrimp, finely crushed flake and similar foods from the outset, which makes them comparatively easy to raise.
For the breeder, the practical consequences are favourable: the large, robust fry are less vulnerable than the tiny young of egg-laying livebearers, and a well-fed, well-conditioned group kept in cool, well-oxygenated water will reproduce steadily. As with most livebearers, providing cover such as dense planting protects newborn fry from being eaten by adults until they have grown past mouth size.
In the aquarium
Ilyodon furcidens is a rewarding fish for the keeper of cool-water livebearers, though it is more a specialist's than a beginner's species — chiefly because it wants conditions opposite to the warm, soft-water setup many aquarists default to. It is an active, robust shoaling fish that appreciates room to move and the gentle current its riffle-dwelling nature prefers; a group in a well-filtered tank with some water movement suits it far better than still, warm water.
Temperature is the key. Keepers consistently report that the species does best on the cool side, broadly around 64–75 °F, and that it tolerates and even benefits from unheated tanks in a temperate room; sustained high tropical temperatures are not to its liking. Water should be hard and alkaline, reflecting its native chemistry, and kept clean and well oxygenated. These cool, hard-water preferences are why it pairs poorly with typical tropical community fish and is best kept in a dedicated or like-minded setup.
Temperament is generally peaceable, but goodeids — Ilyodon included — can be nippy, and males spar and display, so a group with enough space and broken sightlines keeps friction low and discourages fin-nipping of tankmates. Kept in a cool, hard-water, well-circulated aquarium and fed a vegetable-forward diet, the goldbreast splitfin is hardy, long-lived and steadily productive, and keeping it well also contributes in a small way to maintaining a genetically healthy ex-situ population of a family under severe pressure in the wild.
Conservation
Ilyodon furcidens is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, the assessment dated 16 March 2018. This makes it a conspicuous exception within its family: the Goodeidae are among the most threatened groups of freshwater fishes in the world, with the great majority of species ranked Endangered, Critically Endangered, or already Extinct in the Wild, victims of habitat loss, water extraction, pollution and introduced species across the Mexican plateau and Pacific drainages.
The goldbreast splitfin owes its more secure standing to its relatively wide distribution across two river systems — the Ameca–Magdalena and Armería–Coahuayana basins — and its presence at many localities, which buffers it against the single-spring vulnerability that has doomed so many of its relatives. It also shows a tolerance of turbid and variable conditions that more specialised goodeids lack. None of this makes the species immune to the region's broad pressures of dam-building, water diversion, agricultural pollution and non-native fishes, and continued monitoring of its populations is warranted.
For aquarists, the species carries the wider goodeid conservation message. The Goodeid Working Group and allied hobbyist networks maintain captive populations of splitfins precisely because so many are imperilled in nature; keeping documented, locality-labelled stock of even a secure species like Ilyodon furcidens supports the husbandry knowledge and breeding networks on which the family's more endangered members depend.
