The Balsas splitfin is a small, algae-grazing goodeid from the river systems of central and western Mexico — a member of the family of "splitfins" whose females nourish their developing young inside the body through ribbon-like placental structures rather than laying eggs. Ilyodon whitei is a fish of clear and turbid streams across the great Río Balsas drainage and the Pacific-slope Coahuayana basin, where it scrapes the green film of aufwuchs from rocks in shallow, current-swept water. It is at once a hardy, prolific aquarium fish prized by livebearer specialists and a taxonomically tangled lineage whose several isolated populations have drawn conservation attention even as the species as a whole is judged secure.

Taxonomy & naming

Ilyodon whitei was first described by the American ichthyologist Seth Eugene Meek in 1904, originally placed in the genus Goodea; the combination is therefore credited as (Meek, 1904), the parentheses recording the later transfer to Ilyodon. The species belongs to the order Cyprinodontiformes, the family Goodeidae, and the subfamily Goodeinae — the Mexican "splitfins," so called for the notch separating the first few rays of the anal fin in males. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and FishBase carries the species under SpecCode 46435.

The limits of Ilyodon whitei are unusually fluid. The Goodeid Working Group treats the species broadly, folding in forms that have at times borne their own names — cortesae, lennoni, and parts of xantusi — and recognises within it on the order of five distinct subpopulations or evolutionarily significant units (associated with the Río Amacuzac type locality, the Río Atoyac, the central-western Balsas, and the upper and lower Coahuayana). This breadth reflects both the genus's history of taxonomic revision and the genuine genetic and morphological divergence among populations separated by hundreds of kilometres of unsuitable terrain. The genus Ilyodon was distinguished in part on the structure of the ovary and the embryonic feeding organ, a reminder that goodeid systematics rests heavily on reproductive anatomy.

The genus name combines Greek roots — ilyos, mud or cave, and odous, tooth — while the species epithet whitei honours E. A. White, a resident of Mexico City who assisted Meek in his fieldwork; the Eponym Dictionary of Fishes records the dedication. In Spanish the fish is the mexcalpique cola partida, the "split-tailed" splitfin, echoing the English common name Balsas splitfin.

Morphology

Ilyodon whitei is a small, streamlined goodeid. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 2.5 in total length for males and unsexed fish and roughly 3 in for females, the larger size of females being typical of livebearing fishes that must carry developing young. The body is moderately elongate and built for life in moving water, with the deep, laterally compressed profile less pronounced than in some still-water goodeids.

A distinctive feature of the species is the existence of two trophic mouth forms that occur together within populations. Narrow-mouthed individuals are better suited to picking insects and plankton from the surface and water column, while broad-mouthed individuals are adapted to scraping aufwuchs and algae from hard surfaces; this polymorphism, documented by Kingston in 1979, is one of the species' more studied biological traits and complicates simple morphological diagnosis.

Colouration carries the clearest sexual signals. Males frequently show a caudal fin that is partly yellow, edged and marked with black rims, dots, or blotches, and in the Balsas populations the body may be peppered with black spots arranged along the lateral line. Females are plainer, typically displaying a row of larger dark markings along the flank and clear, unpatterned unpaired fins. As in all goodeids, mature males bear the andropodium — the notched, partly fused front of the anal fin used in mating — rather than the rod-like gonopodium of the unrelated poeciliid livebearers.

Habitat

The Balsas splitfin is endemic to Mexico, recorded from the states of Michoacán, México, Morelos, Guerrero, and Puebla. Its range centres on the Hydrographic Region of the Balsas — the vast Río Balsas drainage — where it occurs mainly in the right-bank tributaries including the ríos Nexapa, Grande de Amacuzac, Tepecuacuilco, Cocula, Cutzamala, Tacámbaro, and Tepalcatepec. Beyond the Balsas it extends to the Costa de Michoacán region (the ríos Coalcomán and Nexpe) and into the Pacific-slope Río Coahuayana basin of the Armería–Coahuayana region. The eastern populations, around the Río Nexapa some seventy kilometres south-southeast of Mexico City, and the western populations of the Río Coahuayana lie more than five hundred kilometres apart, a separation that underlies the species' genetic structuring.

The fish lives in the pools and riffles of clear to turbid streams over varied substrates — sand, silt, mud, gravel, rocks, and boulders. Aquatic vegetation is often absent or limited to green algae and rooted plants such as Potamogeton and Ceratophyllum. Surveys by the Goodeid Working Group between 2016 and 2019 found the species in good numbers across a wide depth range, from a few centimetres of water at the margins to roughly a metre deep, in habitats spanning tiny creeks to full rivers.

Characteristic of its preferred haunts are rocks densely coated with green filamentous and short brown algae and the associated aufwuchs community — the grazing surface on which much of its diet depends. Its tolerance of both clear and turbid conditions, and of substrates from soft mud to bare boulder, helps explain why the species remains widespread despite the human pressures on central Mexican rivers.

Feeding

Ilyodon whitei is primarily herbivorous, and FishBase assigns it a low trophic level of about 2.0. Its core diet is the aufwuchs — the carpet of algae, diatoms, and small attached organisms growing on submerged rocks — which it rasps away in the manner of many stream-dwelling grazers. The dense green filamentous and brown algal mats noted on rocks throughout its range are its principal food source.

The species also takes animal prey, collecting insects from the water surface, and here the dual mouth morphology becomes functionally important. Broad-mouthed individuals are the more committed aufwuchs and algae grazers, while narrow-mouthed individuals feed more as surface insectivores and planktivores. The coexistence of both forms within a single population lets the species exploit a wider slice of the available food than either form could alone.

In the aquarium this herbivorous bias should guide feeding. A diet rich in vegetable and algal matter — spirulina-based and other plant-forward prepared foods, blanched greens, and the natural algal growth of a mature tank — suits the fish well, supplemented with small live and frozen invertebrate foods to cover its insectivorous component. As with most grazers, frequent modest feedings better match its natural pattern than infrequent large meals.

Mating

Like all goodeids, Ilyodon whitei reproduces by internal fertilisation. Goodeids differ from the more familiar poeciliid livebearers — guppies, mollies, swordtails — in the structure of the male's intromittent organ: rather than the rod-like gonopodium of the poeciliids, male splitfins possess an andropodium, formed from the shortened and partly separated front rays of the anal fin (the "split" that gives the family its English name). Sperm is transferred to the female internally during a brief mating embrace.

Goodeids do not store sperm in the prolonged way that poeciliid females do, so each brood generally follows a fresh mating rather than being fuelled from a single insemination months earlier — a key contrast with guppies. The sexual dimorphism that distinguishes the sexes also functions in courtship: the male's yellow-and-black caudal fin and, in Balsas fish, the dark body spotting are the visual signals presented to females during mating activity.

Reproduction in the wild is concentrated in the latter part of the dry season. Robert Rush Miller's 2005 treatment of the freshwater fishes of Mexico records breeding around March and April, with young of roughly two to three centimetres found in March and June in shallow, quiet bankside water and among riparian vegetation, where the slower current and cover favour the survival of newborn fish.

Breeding

Ilyodon whitei is viviparous and, like all goodeids, matrotrophic — the defining reproductive mode of the family. Rather than relying on a yolk supply laid down before fertilisation, goodeid embryos are nourished throughout gestation by the mother through trophotaeniae: ribbon-like, placenta-analogous structures that extend from the embryo's vent and absorb nutrients within the ovarian lumen. This is the trait that Carl Hubbs and others used to separate the lineage, and it makes goodeid reproduction physiologically closer to mammalian pregnancy than to the egg-based livebearing of the poeciliids.

Gestation produces relatively large, fully formed fry that emerge ready to swim and feed; the trophotaeniae are resorbed or shed shortly after birth, sometimes leaving a brief scar. In the wild, the appearance of two-to-three-centimetre juveniles in shallow bank habitats during spring and early summer marks the seasonal peak of recruitment.

In captivity the species is very prolific and breeds readily as a colony. A particular advantage for the aquarist is that the adults do not generally prey on their own fry, so a single-species tank can sustain itself without elaborate fry-rescue measures — newborns simply join the group. Specialist keepers recommend a winter cool rest, holding the fish below about 72 °F (and bringing them in before daytime water drops under roughly 63 °F) for two to three months; this pause in fry production mirrors the natural seasonal cycle and is held to keep the strain vigorous over the long term.

In the aquarium

The Balsas splitfin is a hardy and rewarding fish for the livebearer enthusiast, though it is a specialist's animal rather than a community staple. It is best kept in a hardwater, single-species tank that recreates its stream habitat: gravel substrate, rocks, roots, branches, and leaves, with marginal vegetation, and — importantly — moderate to swift water movement, which the species both tolerates and prefers. Good filtration and current suit it far better than the still, soft-water setups favoured by many tropical fishes.

Temperature management is the single most important husbandry point. FishBase gives a natural range of about 68–79 °F, and keepers stress that sustained temperatures above 79 °F lead to disease and shortened life. The fish should be held below that ceiling year-round, and given a distinct winter cool period below 72 °F for two to three months to rest the breeding cycle. Hard, alkaline water matching its central-Mexican origins rounds out the requirements.

Kept well, the species is prolific and self-sustaining, with fry surviving alongside the adults to form a stable colony — one reason it has remained a fixture of dedicated goodeid and livebearer collections, and a fish whose maintenance in the hobby has real conservation value given the pressures on its native rivers.

Conservation

Ilyodon whitei is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (species ID 132521900), under a global assessment dated 18 April 2018 and current in Red List Version 2025-2. The species is widespread across the Balsas drainage and the Pacific-slope basins, occupies a broad range of stream habitats, and was found in good numbers during recent field surveys — the basis for the secure global category. The Red List does, however, note a decreasing population trend, and the fish carries no CITES or CMS listing and no category of risk under Mexico's SEMARNAT NOM-059 (2010).

This reassuring species-level picture conceals a more nuanced situation at finer scales. A 2019 conservation reassessment by Domínguez-Domínguez and colleagues, cited by the Goodeid Working Group, argued that once the species is understood as the broad complex spanning the Coahuayana and Balsas basins, several of its five evolutionarily significant units are individually vulnerable and declining — so that the lineage is effectively more threatened than the single Least Concern label suggests. Central Mexican rivers face mounting pressures from water extraction, pollution, and introduced species, and the more isolated populations are the most exposed.

For the aquarist the practical conservation message is twofold: maintaining genetically distinct wild strains in captivity has genuine value as a hedge against local losses, and that value depends on keeping populations separate and labelled by origin rather than blending them. The Goodeid Working Group exists in large part to coordinate exactly this kind of ex-situ stewardship for Mexico's splitfins.
