Jenynsia alternimaculata is a small, range-restricted livebearer of the Andean foothill streams of western Argentina and southern Bolivia — one of the "onesided livebearers" of the family Anablepidae, named for the curious asymmetry of their genital anatomy. It is a modest fish in appearance, marked by two rows of alternating dark blotches along the flanks, and a poorly known one in the literature: the species was described in 1940 and has since drawn far more attention from conservation assessors than from aquarists. Endemic to a narrow, fragmented set of locations, it is currently listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List, a reminder that the livebearers of the southern continent include genuinely imperilled species alongside the familiar guppies and mollies.

Taxonomy & naming

Jenynsia alternimaculata was described by the American ichthyologist Henry Weed Fowler in 1940, and is treated by Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes as a valid species in the current combination Jenynsia alternimaculata (Fowler, 1940). The parenthetical authority signals that the species was originally placed in a different genus and later transferred to Jenynsia. The genus belongs to the family Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes, onesided livebearers and white-eyes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes, and sits in the subfamily Anablepinae alongside the spectacular surface-skimming four-eyed fishes of the genus Anableps. The genus name honours the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), the English clergyman-naturalist who described the fishes collected on the voyage of the Beagle.

Within Jenynsia, J. alternimaculata is distinguished from the better-known J. lineata by anatomical details documented in the modern revision of the genus: the absence in females of a swelling between the urogenital opening and the front of the anal-fin base, and the absence of a particular mandibular sensory-canal pore. The phylogeny and classification of the Anablepidae were worked out by Ghedotti, whose 1998 study remains the main systematic reference for the group and underpins the species' placement. The English common name recorded for the fish, "Lipeo livebearer," points to the Lipeo drainage of the Argentina–Bolivia border country, the area from which the species is known.

Morphology

Jenynsia alternimaculata is a small fish; the maximum recorded length is about 2 in standard length, based on a male or unsexed specimen, and like other members of the genus the females grow considerably larger than the males. The body is the typical elongate, cylindrical, benthopelagic shape of a small cyprinodontiform, with the dorsal fin set well back. Counts reported for the species are modest: roughly seven to nine soft rays in the dorsal fin and nine to ten in the anal fin.

The most useful field mark is the pigment pattern that gives the species its name: two rows of dorsoventrally elongate dark markings along the lateral surface of the body, the blotches of the two rows offset so that they alternate — alternimaculata, "alternately spotted." Beyond this patterning the fish is plain, without the bright nuptial colour of the popular aquarium livebearers. No photograph of the living fish is held by FishBase, and detailed colour-in-life notes are sparse in the consulted sources; the description here therefore stays close to the documented meristics and the diagnostic spotting rather than guessing at hues.

Habitat

The species is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical to subtropical latitudes, recorded from western Argentina and southern Bolivia in the Andean foothill country along the two nations' shared border. Its English name ties it to the Lipeo drainage, and its overall range is narrow and fragmented — a pattern that is central to its conservation status rather than incidental to it.

Detailed habitat data specific to J. alternimaculata are sparse in the sources consulted. Mating

Like all Anablepidae, Jenynsia alternimaculata is viviparous and fertilises internally. The defining peculiarity of the genus is anatomical asymmetry: the male's intromittent organ — a tubular gonopodium formed from modified anal-fin rays — is laterally one-sided, either dextral (right-handed) or sinistral (left-handed), and females are correspondingly right- or left-"sided" in their genital anatomy. A male can therefore only successfully mate with a female of the complementary orientation, the trait that gives the group its common name, the "onesided livebearers." This contrasts with the symmetric gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers such as guppies and mollies.

Female Jenynsia are noticeably larger than males, and the small, slender males approach the females to transfer sperm via the gonopodium. Species-specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for J. alternimaculata in the sources reviewed; the account here describes the reproductive machinery of the genus, which is well established, rather than claiming observations of this particular fish that the literature does not provide.

Breeding

Jenynsia is a classic example of advanced viviparity with placentotrophy. Rather than simply provisioning their eggs with yolk before fertilisation (lecithotrophy), the females are matrotrophic: they nourish the developing embryos throughout gestation through placental-type ovarian and trophotaenial structures, transferring nutrients from mother to embryo as the young develop. No published gestation length or precise brood-size count for J. alternimaculata was found in the consulted sources, and superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, known in some other livebearers — is not documented for this species; these specifics should be regarded as data sparse rather than assumed.

In the aquarium

Jenynsia alternimaculata is essentially absent from the aquarium hobby. It is a range-restricted, Endangered species of the Andean border country, not a trade fish, and no established husbandry literature exists for it in the sources consulted. There are no reliable captive-care parameters, breeding accounts or strain notes to report, and inventing them would misrepresent a poorly known wild species.

What can be said is general and cautious. As a small, viviparous foothill-stream fish, any responsible attempt to maintain the genus would point toward clean, well-oxygenated, moving water of moderate temperature, a varied micro-omnivore diet, and the careful management that small livebearers need to raise their few young. But given the species' conservation status and the complete lack of documented husbandry, the practical and ethical position is that this is a fish to study and protect in the wild, not one to recommend for the home aquarium.

Conservation

Jenynsia alternimaculata is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List, under criteria B1ab(i,ii,iii,iv), with the assessment dated 11 November 2020. The B1 criterion concerns a restricted extent of occurrence; the appended qualifiers indicate that the population is severely fragmented or confined to few locations and is undergoing a continuing decline in its extent of occurrence, its area of occupancy, the quality of its habitat and the number of locations at which it survives.
