Jenynsia eirmostigma is a small onesided livebearer of southern Brazil's upper Uruguay and Jacuí river basins, named for the broken row of marks that defines its flanks. It belongs to the Anablepidae — the four-eyed fishes and their kin — a New World family in which live birth and internal fertilisation evolved separately from the more familiar guppies and platies. Little-known in the aquarium hobby, it is a temperate-stream fish of headwater drainages, described only in 1995 and assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern.

Taxonomy & naming

Jenynsia eirmostigma was described by Michael J. Ghedotti and Stanley H. Weitzman in 1995. It sits in the genus Jenynsia within the family Anablepidae, the order Cyprinodontiformes — the toothcarps — and the subfamily Anablepinae, which unites the onesided livebearers (Jenynsia) with the four-eyed fishes (Anableps). Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and FishBase records the species under SpecCode 53091.

The specific epithet eirmostigma is built from the Greek eirmos, meaning a series or sequence, and stigma, a mark or spot — a reference to the series of marks that form the three discontinuous lateral stripes along the body. The genus name Jenynsia is an eponym honouring the Reverend Leonard Jenyns (1800–1893), an English clergyman and amateur naturalist best remembered today as the man who described the fishes collected on the voyage of HMS Beagle.

Within Jenynsia the species is distinguished by details of its lateral-line pore pattern — notably the absence of the first mandibular-canal pore (pore W) — and by the form of its gill rakers, characters worked out in Ghedotti's broader phylogenetic study of the Anablepidae. The Anablepinae are notable among livebearers for a one-sided mating asymmetry, discussed below, that is entirely independent of the live-bearing strategy of the Poeciliidae.

Morphology

Jenynsia eirmostigma is a small fish, reaching about 3 in in standard length in the largest recorded specimens. The body is elongate and the mouth slightly oblique, set for feeding at and near the surface as well as in the water column. The dorsal fin carries roughly 10 to 12 soft rays and the anal fin about 9 to 10.

The most distinctive feature, and the source of the name, is the patterning of the flanks: three distinct but discontinuous lateral stripes run along each side, broken into a series of dashes and marks rather than forming continuous lines. Short, robust gill rakers sit on the ventral limb of the first gill arch. As in other Jenynsia, the sexes differ — males are smaller and bear the modified anal fin used in mating — but detailed published notes on colour and dimorphism in this particular species are sparse.

This is the trait behind the family's English name, 'onesided livebearers'. Fertilisation is internal, with the male delivering sperm directly into the female rather than scattering it over eggs.
