Neoheterandria tridentiger is a diminutive Panamanian livebearer, one of the smallest of the New World toothcarps and a fish that most aquarists will only ever meet in the pages of a livebearer atlas. Described by Samuel Garman in 1895 from the lowlands flanking the Panama Canal, it is a freshwater poeciliid in which the male barely reaches two and a half centimetres and the female, at most, doubles that. Like its relatives the guppies and mosquitofishes, it bears live young rather than laying eggs — a tiny, internally fertilising fish of warm coastal streams whose biology is sketched only in outline in the published record.

Taxonomy & naming

Neoheterandria tridentiger was described by the American ichthyologist Samuel Garman in 1895, from material collected in the lowlands of central Panama near the line of what would become the Panama Canal. The species belongs to the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers, which include the guppies, mollies, platies, swordtails and mosquitofishes — within the order Cyprinodontiformes and the subfamily Poeciliinae. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and the parenthetical authority "(Garman, 1895)" indicates that the species has since been moved from the genus in which it was originally placed into Neoheterandria.

The genus Neoheterandria is a small group of micro-livebearers of Central and northern South America, separated from the related genus Heterandria — the name itself signals that history, being a "new Heterandria." The species epithet tridentiger points to a three-pronged or three-toothed structure, and it is the source of the English common name recorded for the fish, the nail toothcarp. Beyond these basics the taxonomic literature is sparse: this is a fish that has attracted far more attention from a handful of specialist livebearer enthusiasts than from the wider scientific community, and detailed revisionary work on the genus is limited.

Morphology

Neoheterandria tridentiger is a very small fish, and one marked by strong sexual size dimorphism. Males reach only about 1 in in total length, placing the species among the smallest of all poeciliids, while females grow considerably larger — to roughly 2 in. The body is the typical elongate, laterally compressed toothcarp form, built for life in shallow, warm water near the surface and among vegetation.

As in all poeciliids, the most diagnostic external feature is found in the male: the anal fin is modified into a gonopodium, a slender intromittent organ formed from elongated and specialised fin rays and used to transfer sperm to the female. The epithet tridentiger — "bearing three teeth" or "three-pronged" — and the common name nail toothcarp both allude to fine structural detail of the male's anatomy. Detailed colour and meristic descriptions for this species are sparse in the readily available literature, and the fish is best characterised simply as a tiny, plainly built livebearer in which the sexes differ sharply in size and the male carries the gonopodium.

Habitat

The species is native to Panama, in Central America. The type material and recorded localities lie in the central isthmus around the Panama Canal zone: Toro Point and Fort Sherman on the Caribbean side, together with the Río Chame and Río Arrijan drainages. These are warm, low-elevation coastal streams and associated waters of the narrow land bridge between the Caribbean and the Pacific.

Neoheterandria tridentiger is a freshwater, pelagic, tropical fish. FishBase records a preferred temperature range of roughly 75–82 °F, consistent with the warm lowland streams of its range. Beyond temperature, the published environmental data are thin — there are no widely cited figures for the pH, hardness or flow regime of its native waters in the readily available sources — so the habitat picture is best drawn in broad strokes: small, warm, lowland Panamanian freshwaters, where this micro-livebearer occupies the shallow, vegetated margins typical of its family.

Feeding

No detailed diet study is available for Neoheterandria tridentiger, and the data here are sparse. The species sits at an estimated trophic level of around 3.0, which places it as a small omnivore or micro-predator rather than a herbivore or a top predator. This is entirely in keeping with the ecology of small poeciliids generally, which take a mixture of tiny aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, micro-crustaceans, algae and detritus from the water column and surface film.

In the aquarium, the species should be treated as a micro-predator that needs small foods to match its very small mouth. Finely powdered prepared foods, microworm, newly hatched brine shrimp, baby Daphnia and similar tiny live and frozen items are appropriate; larger flakes and pellets are unsuitable for so small a fish. As with other little livebearers, frequent small feedings suit it better than occasional large meals.

Mating

Neoheterandria tridentiger reproduces by internal fertilisation, the defining reproductive mode of the poeciliid livebearers. The male uses his gonopodium — the rod-like organ formed from modified anal-fin rays — to transfer sperm directly to the female. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning; fertilisation and the early development of the young both take place within the female's body.

Detailed observations of courtship in this particular species are not well documented, but its behaviour can reasonably be expected to follow the poeciliid pattern, in which small males pursue the larger females and attempt insemination, sometimes through display and sometimes through unsolicited mating attempts. As in many poeciliids, females are able to store sperm internally and may produce a succession of broods from earlier matings; whether Neoheterandria tridentiger shows superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different stages of development, known in some members of the family — is not established in the readily available literature, and is noted here as data sparse rather than asserted.

Breeding

The species is viviparous: the female carries the developing embryos internally and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase records a gestation period of about 24 days and a brood of roughly 10 to 30 young, modest figures that fit the fish's very small body size. A single insemination may fuel more than one brood where sperm is stored, as is common across the family.

The newborn fry emerge as fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately, but they are exceptionally tiny given the small size of the parents and need correspondingly small first foods such as infusoria, freshly hatched brine shrimp and finely powdered preparations. As with most livebearers, adults — including the mother — will take fry given the chance, so dense planting, floating cover or separation of gravid females is the practical route to raising good numbers. With high reproductive resilience (FishBase estimates a population doubling time of under fifteen months), a healthy group can sustain itself readily once established.

In the aquarium

Neoheterandria tridentiger is a specialist's livebearer rather than a beginner's fish, kept mainly by dedicated members of livebearer societies rather than offered routinely in the general trade. Its extreme small size is the governing husbandry fact: it is far too small to share a tank with most ordinary community fishes, which would out-compete it for food or simply eat it, and it is best maintained as a single-species group in a small, well-planted, gently filtered aquarium where its tiny fry have a chance to survive.

Warm water suits it, in line with the 75–82 °F range recorded for the species, and dense vegetation provides both the cover the fish prefers and the refuge its young require. Gentle filtration is important so that small fry are not drawn into the intake. Because the broad water-chemistry tolerances of this particular species are not well documented, the sensible approach is stable, clean, warm fresh water rather than the pursuit of precise target numbers. Kept this way, the fish breeds quietly and continuously, and a colony is largely self-sustaining.

Conservation

Neoheterandria tridentiger is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, in an assessment dated 2 October 2019. The species carries no CITES or CMS listing and is regarded as harmless, with a low fishing vulnerability and high biological resilience — the profile of a small, fast-reproducing fish under no significant collection or trade pressure.

That said, the species has a comparatively restricted native range, confined to the freshwaters of central Panama around the Canal zone, and as with any narrowly distributed lowland fish its long-term security depends on the condition of those coastal drainages. There is no indication of a present threat at the species level, but the limited range is worth keeping in view. For aquarists the relevant point is simply responsible practice: this is a captive-bred curiosity of the livebearer hobby, and stock should be maintained and shared within the hobby rather than released into local waters.
