Panamius panamensis, the Panama cichlid (sometimes the 'rosy cichlid' of the hobby), is a small, stone-grazing cichlid of the moderately flowing rivers of central Panama — the type species and, to date, the only member of the genus Panamius. A modest fish in size and disposition, it spent most of a century shuttled through one provisional genus after another before a combined molecular and morphological revision finally set it apart in a lineage of its own: an old, isolated branch of the Central American cichlid radiation that has no close living relatives.

Taxonomy & naming

The Panama cichlid was described in 1913 by the American ichthyologists Seth Eugene Meek and Samuel Frederick Hildebrand, in their work on the freshwater fishes collected during the building of the Panama Canal. They named it Neetroplus panamensis, on a holotype (FMNH 7601) and paratypes now in the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago, taken from the Río Mandinga at Bas Obispo in the former Canal Zone. Few small cichlids have changed surnames as often. Over the following century the species was carried as Cichlasoma panamense, Hypsophrys panamensis, Archocentrus panamensis, Cryptoheros panamensis and (in older aquarium literature) Neetroplus panamensis — a roll-call that reflects less the fish than the long, unresolved argument over how to carve up the catch-all genus 'Cichlasoma' and its convict-cichlid satellites. That argument was largely settled for Middle American cichlids by Říčan, Piálek, Dragová and Novák in their 2016 revision (Vertebrate Zoology 66), a combined molecular and morphological analysis that split the old assemblage into a series of natural genera. Their phylogeny recovered panamensis not within Cryptoheros or Archocentrus at all, but as an isolated, early-diverging lineage with no close living relatives — so they erected a new monotypic genus, Panamius, to hold it. The name is a straightforward geographic coinage: Panama, the country, plus the Latinising suffix. Within Cichlinae the genus sits in the heroine radiation (tribe Heroini); the Cichlid Room Companion and the Catalog of Fishes both treat Panamius panamensis as the valid name.

Morphology

Panamius panamensis is a small, fairly deep-bodied and laterally compressed cichlid, reaching about 5 in in total length — wild fish and most aquarium specimens are smaller still, making it one of the more compact Central American cichlids. The body is built on the convict-cichlid plan: a short, rounded head, a small terminal-to-subterminal mouth set for working at stone surfaces, and well-developed dorsal and anal fins. Ground colour is a pale cream to pearly tan, and breeding fish flush with the warm tones that earn the species its 'rosy cichlid' trade name — reddish and bluish iridescence across the flanks and unpaired fins of a displaying male, with the markings sharpening through courtship and spawning. A degree of vertical barring can show on the sides, intensifying with mood. Sexual dimorphism follows the usual small-cichlid pattern: males grow somewhat larger and carry the brighter red-and-blue display colours, while ripe and brooding females are smaller and take on a darker, greyer cast — the dusky breeding dress common to convict-type cichlids, where the female advertises her condition by going dark rather than bright. Outside of breeding the sexes are not always easy to tell apart at a glance.

Habitat

The species is endemic to Panama, where it is essentially a fish of the central Atlantic (Caribbean) slope — above all the Río Chagres basin, the great river at the heart of the Panama Canal watershed, together with associated drainages such as the Río Mandinga of the type series. FishBase and the Catalog of Fishes give its range as the Atlantic slope of Panama, including the Chagres and the Canal Zone. It is a fish of moderately flowing water: clear-to-slightly-turbid rivers and streams running over a bottom of small stones, gravel, sand, rocks and leaf litter, the kind of structured riffle-and-run habitat where a stone-grazer can work the rock surfaces. FishBase characterises it as a benthopelagic freshwater fish of warm lowland rivers, with a recorded thermal preference of roughly 79–86 °F and the moderately hard, near-neutral-to-alkaline water (pH about 7.0–8.0, hardness around 9–20 dGH) typical of these Panamanian drainages. As a river fish of the upper few metres rather than any deep lake, its depth range is shallow.

Feeding

Panamius panamensis is, in the wild, primarily a grazer of aufwuchs — the film of algae, microorganisms and trapped detritus that coats submerged stones and rock surfaces in flowing water. FishBase places it very low on the food web (trophic level about 2.0, essentially that of a primary consumer) and records it taking 'alimentary material from the surfaces of rocks and the substrate,' the classic stone-scraping habit shared with its old genus-mate Neetroplus and with many small riverine cichlids. The small, low-set mouth is the working end of a fish built to rasp and pick at hard surfaces rather than to hunt. In practice it is best read as an omnivore with a strong herbivorous-detritivorous lean: alongside the algal film it will take small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae and other animal matter that it encounters while grazing. In the river community it functions as a low-level grazer-gleaner working the stony bottom, not as a predator.

Mating

Like the convict-cichlid lineage it was long classified within, the Panama cichlid is a monogamous, pair-bonding, biparental cave spawner, and it is comparatively peaceable for a Central American cichlid outside of breeding. A male and female form a pair and together select and clean a sheltered spawning site — the underside of a rock, a crevice, a hollow or any cave-like recess — and defend a territory around it. Courtship is the standard cichlid repertoire of lateral displays, fin-spreading, quivering and substrate-cleaning, with the male in his heightened red-and-blue colours and the female advertising her readiness by darkening into her dusky breeding dress. Pair aggression sharpens around the chosen cave as spawning approaches but does not approach the ferocity of the large Parachromis-type predators that share its waters; this is a small, territorial fish defending a small patch of riverbed.

Breeding

Panamius panamensis is a biparental cave (or sheltered-substrate) spawner in the convict-cichlid mould. The adhesive eggs are laid in a concealed spot — on the roof or wall of a cave, under a rock, or in a crevice — and tended by both parents in the usual division of labour: the female concentrates on fanning and direct egg- and larva-care, the male on perimeter defence, though as the brood develops the female takes on the greater share of close tending. After hatching, the wrigglers are moved to one or more pits and guarded; once free-swimming, the fry are herded and defended as a school by the pair. Published clutch figures specific to this species are sparse, but as a small biparental cave-brooder it produces modest broods — on the order of a few dozen to perhaps a couple of hundred eggs — rather than the large clutches of the open-substrate eartheaters. Parental care is extended in the typical cichlid fashion, with eggs, larvae and free-swimming fry all guarded, and pairs in condition will re-spawn at intervals.

In the aquarium

The Panama cichlid is an uncommon but established aquarium fish, traded under its current name and under the older 'Cryptoheros panamensis' and 'Archocentrus panamensis,' and sometimes as the 'rosy cichlid' for its breeding colours. It is among the more even-tempered small Central Americans and is a reasonable choice for a keeper who wants a convict-type cichlid with a softer disposition than the true convict. Despite its modest size it appreciates room: a single pair does well in a tank of around 47 in (roughly 55 US gal or more), and a group from which a pair is allowed to form does better still in a larger footprint where subordinate fish can keep clear during spawning.

The set-up should track its stony-river origins. Provide a substrate of sand and smooth gravel with plenty of rounded stones and rockwork, arranged to create caves, crevices and overhangs — both for cover and as spawning sites — together with open water over the bottom for grazing and swimming. Good current and well-oxygenated water suit a fish of moderately flowing rivers. Water should be warm and on the harder, near-neutral-to-alkaline side: temperature around 79–86 °F, pH roughly 7.0–8.0, hardness in the moderate range, with generous filtration and regular water changes.

Feeding is straightforward but should respect its herbivorous-detritivorous, aufwuchs-grazing biology: a varied diet built around a quality vegetable- or spirulina-based prepared food, supplemented with frozen and live invertebrates (bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia) and the natural algal film that develops on rockwork. It feeds largely off surfaces and the bottom, so sinking foods are taken most readily. For tankmates, choose robust but not aggressive companions of similar size — other peaceful-to-moderate Central Americans, larger tetras and well-armoured catfish work; avoid the genuinely belligerent large cichlids of its home rivers, which will dominate it, and avoid fish small enough to be treated as food. The most common keeper mistakes are too little rock structure (a cave-spawner with no caves), under-filtering, and crowding a breeding pair so it has no room to hold a territory.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Panamius panamensis as Near Threatened (NT), under criterion B1ab(iii), in an assessment dated 10 December 2019. The 'Near Threatened' rating reflects a restricted geographic range — the species is confined to the central Atlantic-slope drainages of a single country, with the Chagres basin and the Panama Canal watershed at its core — combined with a continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. That watershed is among the most heavily managed and developed freshwater systems in Central America: the damming of the Chagres to create Gatún and Madden (Alhajuela) lakes, urban and agricultural pressure on the surrounding catchment, and water-quality degradation all bear on a riverine grazer that depends on clean, stony, flowing water. None of these is documented as having driven the species to a threatened category outright, but together they place it close to the threshold. It carries no CITES listing and is of no fishery interest beyond the small ornamental trade; FishBase rates it of low vulnerability and harmless to humans.
