Taxonomy & naming
Phallichthys tico was described by the American ichthyologist William A. Bussing in 1963, with its type locality in the Río Sarapiquí drainage of Costa Rica — part of the upper San Juan River basin draining to the Caribbean. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phallichthys tico Bussing, 1963 as the valid name, placing the species in the genus Phallichthys within the New World livebearer family Poeciliidae (order Cyprinodontiformes, subfamily Poeciliinae). FishBase lists the common name "Blackspotted toothcarp"; livebearer hobbyists more often call it the "dwarf merry widow," the smallest member of a genus whose species share the "merry widow" name.
The genus Phallichthys is a small Central American group distributed along the Atlantic slope from Guatemala to Panama. Its name is built from the Greek phallos, meaning penis, and ichthys, meaning fish — a direct reference to the conspicuously enlarged gonopodium of the males, which in this genus is proportionally among the longest of any poeciliid. The species epithet tico is the colloquial Costa Rican demonym for a Costa Rican, a fitting nod to the fish's home country.
Among its congeners P. tico is distinguished by its small size and comparatively elongate, slightly oval body. It will not hybridise with poeciliids outside the genus, and within the hobby it is kept and bred as a clean, well-circumscribed species rather than as a complex of forms.
Morphology
Phallichthys tico is a small, robust toothcarp of moderate, slightly oval body depth. FishBase gives a maximum size of about 1 in standard length for males and unsexed fish and roughly 1.5 in SL for females; hobbyist accounts describe males as rarely reaching an inch and females usually staying under about 1.25 inches, making this the smallest species in the genus. The ground colour is a plain brown, and the flanks carry eight to ten dark vertical bars that are most evident in males and in young fish. The dorsal fin bears a dark blotch toward its posterior edge.
The defining feature is the male's gonopodium — the intromittent organ formed from modified anal-fin rays that all poeciliids use to fertilise the female internally. In Phallichthys this structure is exceptionally long, and because P. tico has such a small body the gonopodium looks especially striking, its apex falling short of the base of the tail. A small hooked tip at the end of the organ helps the male grip the female during the brief moment of transfer.
Sexual dimorphism is otherwise modest by livebearer standards: this is not a brightly coloured fish, and the sexes differ mainly in size, body shape and the presence of the gonopodium. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, while males are smaller and more slender, their elongate gonopodium the most obvious distinguishing mark.
Habitat
Phallichthys tico is native to Central America, where it occurs on the Atlantic (Caribbean) slope; the type material comes from the Río Sarapiquí drainage of Costa Rica, within the upper San Juan River system. It is recorded across an elevation span from near sea level up to roughly 600 metres, occupying small, slow-flowing freshwater habitats rather than fast rivers.
The fish favours shallow water — typically less than about 12 in deep — that is connected to standing, marshy backwaters, and it is most often found over muddy bottoms. It swims in small groups near the surface of turbid, slow water, keeping close to the shoreline or among submerged undergrowth where cover is dense. This preference for shallow, vegetated, slow-moving margins is typical of the smaller Central American poeciliids.
Reported water conditions are warm and near-neutral: FishBase gives a tropical range of about 73–86 °F, pH around 7.0 to 7.5, and hardness of roughly 3 to 10 dH. Hobbyists report the fish does best toward the warmer end, around 81 °F. Its small, restricted range on the Costa Rican Caribbean slope is the basis for its conservation listing, since localised habitat change can affect a large share of the population at once.
Feeding
In the wild Phallichthys tico is a grazing micro-omnivore. FishBase records a diet of unicellular algae, diatoms and organic ooze, supplemented at times with insect larvae, and assigns the species a low trophic level of about 2.4 — consistent with a fish that takes most of its nutrition from biofilm and microfauna rather than from active predation. It works the surface film and the substrate of shallow, turbid water, picking at the algal and detrital layer.
In the aquarium the species is an undemanding omnivore that grazes continuously on biofilm, algae and microfauna and readily accepts prepared foods — quality flake and small pellets — alongside frozen and live items. A varied diet that includes some vegetable or algal matter keeps the fish in good condition and supports breeding.
As with most small, constantly grazing livebearers, frequent small feedings suit P. tico better than infrequent large ones, and overfeeding is the more common mistake. A planted tank that grows its own film of algae and infusoria provides much of what the fish needs between feedings.
Mating
Like all poeciliids, Phallichthys tico practises internal fertilisation. The male approaches a female from below and behind with the gonopodium swung forward and extended; the hooked tip at the end of the organ helps him make and hold contact while sperm is delivered, packaged as spermatophores, into the female's genital pore. There is no nest, no territory and no courtship structure — mating is a matter of the male repeatedly positioning himself to achieve a brief transfer.
The genus is notable for the extreme length of the male gonopodium, and in this small-bodied species the organ is proportionally enormous. That investment in the intromittent apparatus is the reproductive counterpart to the "merry widow" name: the male's reproductive equipment is the most conspicuous thing about an otherwise plain little fish.
As in other poeciliids, females can store sperm internally, so a single insemination can fertilise more than one successive brood. Detailed data on superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages, which occurs in some livebearer genera — are not documented for P. tico in the sources at hand, so the species is best described simply as a sperm-storing internal fertiliser; data here are sparse.
Breeding
Phallichthys tico is viviparous: the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Gestation lasts roughly four weeks, shortening to a little over three weeks in warmer water above about 81 °F. The fry are born fully formed, coloured like their parents, and able to swim and feed on their own from the moment of birth; there is no parental care.
Broods are small for a livebearer — fitting for the smallest species in the genus. Hobbyist accounts describe about a dozen fry as a good drop, against around thirty in other Phallichthys and up to sixty in the larger P. amates. Females may produce a first litter at a length of about an inch; young males develop a recognisable gonopodium by around seven weeks of age, and young females may be carrying their own first brood by ten to twelve weeks, so generations turn over quickly.
Because the fry are independent at birth, raising them is mostly a matter of providing cover. Dense planting — Java moss and fern, with floating Najas or hornwort — gives newborns somewhere to hide and lets a reasonable number survive in a community setting. One curious behaviour has been reported by an experienced keeper: every female P. tico observed performed a single brief "death-spiral" roll around the time of sexual maturity, never repeated, the cause of which is unknown.
In the aquarium
Phallichthys tico is a hardy, peaceful community fish well suited to a quiet planted aquarium. Keepers report success in tanks of roughly 20 to 55 gallons furnished with plenty of plant cover — Java moss and fern below, floating Najas or hornwort above — which suits a small surface-oriented shoaler and gives fry a refuge. It is undemanding about water chemistry, tolerating a wide range of parameters around neutral pH, moderate hardness (about 7 GH / 125 ppm) and low carbonate hardness (around 2 KH).
Good husbandry is straightforward: generous water changes — keepers describe about 50 percent weekly — keep the fish in condition, and a warm tank toward 81 °F suits this Atlantic-slope species. Feeding is easy, as the fish grazes biofilm and microfauna and readily takes flake, pellet, frozen and live foods. It is a peaceful, non-aggressive species that does best with similarly small, gentle tankmates.
A practical note for the livebearer keeper: P. tico will not crossbreed with poeciliids outside its own genus, which makes it easy to maintain pure in a community of other small livebearers. Its modest colour and small size mean it is kept more for its behaviour and breeding interest — and for the comically long gonopodium of the male — than for show colour.
Conservation
Phallichthys tico is assessed as Vulnerable (VU) on the IUCN Red List, under criterion B1ab(iii), which flags a species with a small or restricted range subject to a continuing decline in habitat quality. The listing reflects the fish's limited distribution on the Caribbean slope of Costa Rica rather than any collapse in numbers; biologically the species is resilient, with a population doubling time of under fifteen months.
The restricted range is the crux of the assessment: a fish confined to the shallow, marsh-connected lowland waters of a single drainage system is exposed to localised pressures — drainage, pollution, land-use change and habitat degradation — that can affect a large proportion of its global population at once. The species is not listed under CITES or CMS.
For aquarists the species carries the usual responsibilities of keeping a range-restricted livebearer: maintain captive lines cleanly, never release fish into local waters, and treat the hobby population as a small insurance against pressures on the wild stock.
