Phallichthys fairweatheri was described in 1959 by the American ichthyologists Donn Eric Rosen and Reeve Maclaren Bailey, two of the most influential workers on the poeciliid livebearers of the twentieth century. The species sits within the genus Phallichthys in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, in the order Cyprinodontiformes; FishBase places it in the subfamily Poeciliinae alongside the guppies, mollies and their relatives. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phallichthys fairweatheri Rosen & Bailey, 1959 as the valid name.
The genus name Phallichthys is built from the Greek phallos, meaning penis, and ichthys, meaning fish — a direct reference to the genus's hallmark feature, an unusually long gonopodium, the intromittent organ of the males. The specific epithet fairweatheri is an eponym honouring the Reverend Dr Gerald Fairweather, a member of the 1949 New York Aquarium expedition to British Honduras, the territory now known as Belize. The fish is therefore named twice over for its origins in the livebearer world: once for the defining anatomy of its genus, and once for one of the collectors who helped bring it to scientific attention.
Phallichthys is a small genus of Central American livebearers, and the species are not always easy to tell apart on external features alone, with details of the male gonopodium historically important in their separation. The common English name in circulation, "picotee livebearer," follows the usage in FishBase and the specialist livebearer literature; the species otherwise carries little popular nomenclature, reflecting its limited presence in the general aquarium trade.
Morphology
Phallichthys fairweatheri is a small fish. Recorded maximum sizes place males and unsexed individuals at around 1.5 in standard length, with females reaching approximately 2 in — a modest, typically poeciliid size range in which the females are the larger sex, as is usual for the family. The body is the generalised livebearer shape: laterally compressed, deepest through the midbody, tapering to a rounded caudal fin, and adapted for manoeuvring among aquatic plants rather than sustained open-water swimming.
As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ. Males are smaller and slimmer and bear the gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — which in Phallichthys is notably long relative to the body and is the feature that gives the genus its name. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, and when carrying developing young they show the swollen abdomen and darkened gravid region typical of pregnant livebearers. Detailed published descriptions of the live colouration of this particular species are sparse; the fish is not a strongly ornamented species in the way that wild guppies or some Xiphophorus are, and the available record emphasises structure and size over conspicuous pattern.
Habitat
Phallichthys fairweatheri is a freshwater fish of the Atlantic, or Caribbean, slope of Central America, distributed from southern Mexico through Guatemala and into Honduras. Within that range it is associated with slow and standing waters rather than fast current: FishBase characterises its habitat as the lushly vegetated, slowly flowing and standing marshy peripheral areas of rivers — the quiet, plant-choked margins and backwaters rather than the main channel.
The water conditions reported for the species describe a warm, moderately hard tropical environment. This is the typical feeding ecology of a small, vegetation-dwelling poeciliid: a near-constant grazer working the surfaces of plants and substrate rather than an active midwater hunter.
In captivity, where the species is kept mainly by livebearer specialists, it can be expected to behave like its relatives and accept a varied small-particle diet: good-quality flake and micro-pellets with a meaningful share of vegetable or algal content, alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, newly hatched brine shrimp, microworm and finely chopped bloodworm. As with other small grazing livebearers, several modest feedings suit it better than one large meal, and a diet that includes plant matter helps maintain condition. Breeding

There is no documented superfetation — the carrying of multiple broods at different stages of development simultaneously — recorded for Phallichthys, so the species is best described simply as a yolk-feeding livebearer producing successive single broods.
The newborn fry emerge as fully formed miniature fish, immediately able to swim and feed, as is the rule for poeciliids. In keeping with the family's general behaviour, dense planting or fry cover is the sensible approach for anyone raising broods, since adult livebearers commonly predate their own young; the marshy, vegetation-rich habitat the wild fish occupies provides exactly this kind of cover naturally. Brood sizes of 10 to 40 mark this as a moderately productive small livebearer — fewer than the largest broods of a well-fed guppy, but a steady output that suits a quietly reproducing population in vegetated shallows.
In the aquarium
Phallichthys fairweatheri is a species of the specialist livebearer keeper rather than the general aquarium trade, and it is maintained on much the same principles as other small, peaceful Central American poeciliids. It is a small, undemanding fish that suits a well-planted aquarium reproducing its natural marshy habitat: plenty of vegetation for cover and grazing, gentle flow, and warm, moderately hard, neutral-to-alkaline water in the region of 75–82 °F, pH around 6.5 to 8.0, and hardness of roughly 15 to 25 dH. Dense planting serves a double purpose, providing both the grazing surfaces the fish exploits and the fry cover that lets broods survive.
As with most livebearers, keeping the fish in a group with a sensible sex ratio — more females than males — reduces the persistent harassment that male poeciliids direct at females, and its peaceable temperament makes it a candidate for a quiet community of similarly small, gentle species. Because the fish breeds readily and the family is prone to consuming its own fry, population management and fry refuge are the practical husbandry concerns rather than any particular fragility.
