Phalloceros caudimaculatus is a small, speckled South American livebearer best known under the hobby names dusky millions fish and caudo. Native to the coastal drainages from south-eastern Brazil through Uruguay to northern Argentina, it is a hardy, prolific toothcarp whose body and fins are dusted with a profusion of small black spots. Like the guppy it has been carried around the world for mosquito control and now turns up as a feral and sometimes invasive fish far from its native range — including the drains and swamps of Western Australia. In the aquarium it is an undemanding, peaceful livebearer that breeds with little encouragement.

Taxonomy & naming

Phalloceros caudimaculatus was described by the German-Brazilian naturalist Reinhold Hensel in 1868, from material collected in southern Brazil. The original combination was placed in another genus, so the authority is cited in parentheses — (Hensel, 1868) — reflecting the later transfer to Phalloceros. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Phalloceros caudimaculatus as a valid name in the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, within the subfamily Poeciliinae and the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus Phalloceros was for a long time treated as effectively monotypic in the aquarium literature, with caudimaculatus serving as a catch-all for the speckled livebearers of south-eastern South America. A modern taxonomic revision split the genus into numerous species, narrowing the true range and identity of P. caudimaculatus; much older hobby and biological-control material recorded simply as "Phalloceros caudimaculatus" may in fact represent related species under the revised classification. For the purposes of this atlas the Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and caudimaculatus remains the type and most widely encountered member of the genus.

The common names trace the fish's two main reputations. "Dusky millions fish" and "caudo" come from the aquarium trade, where it was once a staple alongside the guppy (the original "millions fish"); "speckled mosquitofish" reflects its historical release for mosquito control, in the manner of Gambusia.

Morphology

Phalloceros caudimaculatus is a small, deep-bodied livebearer with marked sexual dimorphism in size. Males reach only about 1.5 in standard length, while females grow considerably larger, to roughly 2.5 in total length — the larger, plainer sex typical of the family. The dorsal fin is short, with about seven to nine soft rays, and the pectoral fins are small, not reaching back to the bases of the pelvic fins.

The species takes its hobby name from its colour: the body and fins are scattered with a profusion of small black patches and speckles, the density and arrangement of which vary between individuals and populations. A spotted or blotched caudal marking gives the species its epithet caudimaculatus, literally "tail-spotted." Selectively bred and feral populations include a gold or xanthic form in which the dark melanin pattern is reduced and the fish appears yellow-gold.

As in all poeciliids, the clearest sexual character is the male's gonopodium — the anal fin modified into a slender intromittent organ for internal fertilisation. In P. caudimaculatus the tip of the gonopodium bears a distinctly downturned hook, a structural detail used in identification. Females lack this structure, are deeper-bodied, and show a darkened gravid area at the rear of the abdomen when carrying young.

Habitat

Phalloceros caudimaculatus is native to the coastal and lowland fresh waters of south-eastern South America, broadly from Rio de Janeiro in Brazil southward through Uruguay to northern Argentina. It is a fish of small, slow waters — streams, ditches, ponds, canals, swampy margins and vegetated shallows — rather than large open rivers. FishBase records it as occurring in fresh and slightly brackish water and as essentially pelagic in these small habitats; it is non-migratory.

The species is tolerant of a wide range of conditions, which underpins both its success in the wild and its readiness as an introduced fish. Reported water chemistry spans roughly pH 7.0 to 8.0 and moderate to fairly hard water (around 9 to 19 dH), at warm-temperate to subtropical temperatures of about 68–75 °F. This tolerance of cooler, harder, somewhat alkaline water distinguishes it from many strictly tropical livebearers and lets it persist in temperate-zone drains and ponds well outside the true tropics.

That adaptability has a downside. Widely introduced for mosquito control and via the aquarium trade, P. caudimaculatus has established feral populations in several parts of the world; it is recorded as invasive in the swamps and drains of the Perth metropolitan area in Western Australia, and is listed in the Global Invasive Species Database, with at least one country reporting adverse ecological impact on native fauna.

Feeding

In the wild Phalloceros caudimaculatus is an omnivore, taking algae, detritus, small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae — including mosquito larvae, the basis of its historical use in biological mosquito control. FishBase places it at a trophic level of about 3.0, consistent with a mixed diet weighted toward small animal prey but including plant and algal material. As a small, near-surface grazer it feeds more or less continuously on whatever drifting or attached food is available.

In the aquarium it is an easy feeder that accepts almost anything offered: good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp, microworm and finely chopped bloodworm. A share of vegetable or algal matter supports condition and colour. As with other small livebearers, several small feedings a day suit it better than one large meal, and overfeeding is the more common husbandry error than underfeeding.

Mating

Reproduction in Phalloceros caudimaculatus is internal and, as in poeciliids generally, continuous rather than seasonal in suitable conditions. Fertilisation is achieved by the male's gonopodium — the modified anal fin, here tipped with a distinct downturned hook — which transfers sperm to the female. Males do not build nests or hold territories; instead they pursue females persistently, combining brief courtship with sneak mating attempts in the manner typical of the family.

Females can store viable sperm internally, so a single successful mating can fuel several successive broods without the male present. This combination of internal fertilisation, sperm storage and the small, mobile male is the reproductive strategy that makes the family so prolific and so readily established outside its native range. Data on the fine details of mate choice in this species are sparse compared with the heavily studied guppy, and are best described as not well documented here.

Breeding

Phalloceros caudimaculatus is a viviparous livebearer: the female carries the developing young internally and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase reports a gestation of about 24 days, after which 10 to 50 young are born; brood size scales with the size and condition of the female, with larger females producing the larger broods. The species' high resilience — a population doubling time estimated at under 15 months — reflects this fecundity.

The newborn fry are fully formed miniature fish, able to swim and feed immediately. As with most livebearers, the adults — including the mother — will eat fry given the chance, so dense planting, floating cover or separating the young is needed to raise good numbers. The fry grow quickly on infusoria, finely powdered foods and newly hatched brine shrimp, and males begin to develop the gonopodium and adult speckling within a few weeks. There is no evidence of the superfetation (carrying overlapping broods at different developmental stages) seen in some other poeciliids, so broods are best treated as discrete; where this is uncertain it is noted as data sparse rather than asserted.

In the aquarium

Phalloceros caudimaculatus is an undemanding, peaceful livebearer well suited to a beginner or to a temperate, unheated community. It is small, active and sociable, best kept in a group, and — like other livebearers — benefits from a sex ratio skewed toward females to spread out male attention. Because it breeds readily, population control rather than coaxing reproduction quickly becomes the real management task.

Water chemistry should reflect its tolerance of neutral to moderately hard, slightly alkaline water (around pH 7.0 to 8.0), with temperatures in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius; its comfort at the cooler end of that range makes it a candidate for subtropical or unheated tanks where many tropical livebearers would struggle. It is hardy and forgiving of imperfect conditions, valuing stability and cleanliness over precise numbers.

The most important caution with this species is ethical rather than technical: as a documented invasive fish, surplus stock must never be released into local waters or storm drains, where its hardiness and live-bearing fecundity let it establish all too easily. Unwanted fish should be rehomed through the hobby, not the nearest pond.

Conservation

Phalloceros caudimaculatus is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessed 9 November 2020). The species is widespread and abundant across its native south-eastern South American range, tolerates a broad span of habitats and water conditions, and faces no significant threat at the species level — a status further reinforced by the many introduced populations now established beyond the native range.

As with the guppy, the conservation concern runs the other way. Because of its hardiness and live-bearing fecundity, P. caudimaculatus has been moved around the world for mosquito control and through the aquarium trade, and feral populations are now established in several regions. It is listed in the IUCN/ISSG Global Invasive Species Database, and in places such as Western Australia it is recognised as an invasive fish that can compete with native fauna. The responsible position for an aquarist is therefore not to protect the species but to contain it: keep it well, breed it if you like, but never release it into local waters.
