Phalloceros circummontanus was formally described in 2025 by Souto-Santos, Mejia, Arcila and Buckup in the journal Neotropical Ichthyology, in a paper titled "Dismantling the Phalloceros harpagos species complex: description of a new species from Brazilian highlands based on morphological and molecular evidence." The species had previously been bundled within a broad, geographically sprawling concept of Phalloceros harpagos; the describing team combined external morphology, meristics and DNA evidence to show that the highland populations encircling the great coastal mountain ranges of southeastern Brazil form a distinct, diagnosable lineage worthy of species rank. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes governs the valid name, and recognises Phalloceros circummontanus Souto-Santos, Mejia, Arcila & Buckup, 2025.
The genus Phalloceros sits within the family Poeciliidae — the New World livebearers that also include the guppies, mollies, platies and mosquitofishes — and within the subfamily Poeciliinae. Phalloceros is a genus of small, internally fertilising, live-bearing toothcarps endemic to South America, with a centre of diversity in southeastern Brazil. The genus has historically been taxonomically knotty: many nominal forms were once lumped under one or two widespread names, and the 2025 description is part of a continuing effort to resolve that complex into its true component species using modern integrative methods.
The generic name Phalloceros combines the Greek phallos, "penis," with keras, "horn," a reference to the structure of the male's intromittent organ — the hallmark gonopodium of the poeciliids. The species epithet circummontanus is Latin, from circum ("around") and montanus ("of the mountains"), referencing the fish's distribution wrapped around the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar mountain ranges of the Brazilian highlands.
Morphology
Phalloceros circummontanus is a small fish, recorded to about 1.5 in standard length. The body is elongated with an oval cross-section, and in both sexes the dorsal profile is gently convex between the tip of the snout and the origin of the dorsal fin — one of the external features the describing authors used to set the species apart from its relatives in the harpagos complex. A dark lateral spot is typically present, falling modally on the sixteenth scale of the lateral series, a small but diagnostically useful marking in a genus where pigment patterns can otherwise be subtle.
Meristically, the species carries 7 to 9 soft rays in the dorsal fin (most often 7 or 8, rarely 9), 9 to 11 soft rays in the anal fin, and 31 to 32 vertebrae. As in all poeciliids, the most consequential anatomical feature is the male anal fin, which is modified into the gonopodium used to transfer sperm. The original description notes several fine structural diagnostics tied to this region: a hook present in the gonopodial appendix, and in small specimens (about 0.5–1 in SL) a rounded posterior flap on that appendix.
Several diagnostic features also concern the female. The tip of the female urogenital papilla is oriented caudally — pointing toward the tail — and most females bear a flattened, hood-like projection of skin between the anus and the urogenital papilla. These soft-tissue details, easily overlooked in life, were part of the morphological evidence that, together with molecular data, justified separating this highland lineage from the rest of the former Phalloceros harpagos.
Habitat
Phalloceros circummontanus is endemic to the Brazilian highlands of southeastern Brazil, where the original description records it from the upper rio Paraná drainage, the upper rio Paraíba do Sul, and the headwaters of coastal rivers — the whole distribution effectively wrapping around the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar, as the name circummontanus advertises. This is upland, relatively cool-water country compared with the warm lowland habitats of many better-known livebearers.
The fish occupies a range of small-water settings, from still pools to fast-flowing hillside streams. It tolerates a variety of water clarities, having been recorded in clear, blackwater and turbid conditions alike, over substrates of mud, sand and gravel. This flexibility in flow and clarity is characteristic of the small, adaptable Phalloceros livebearers, which tend to thrive in the marginal, fluctuating habitats where larger fishes are scarce.
Because the species was only described in 2025, detailed, locality-by-locality ecological data remain sparse, and much of what can be said about its habitat is drawn from the type-series localities and from the general ecology of its genus. What is clear is its association with the headwater and highland drainages of the southeastern Brazilian coastal and upper-Paraná systems rather than with warm lowland rivers.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists yet for Phalloceros circummontanus, but its trophic position is consistent with the small omnivorous livebearers of its genus — FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.0. Fish of this size and ecology typically subsist as micro-omnivores and opportunistic grazers, taking small aquatic invertebrates, insect larvae, microcrustaceans, algae, diatoms and organic detritus from the substrate and water column of their streams.
In the small, often shallow highland streams it inhabits, such a fish would feed on whatever the habitat offers as it shifts with flow and season: drifting and benthic invertebrates in faster reaches, and a larger share of algal and detrital material in stiller pools. The balance of animal to plant matter in the diet of small Phalloceros species generally varies with what is locally available rather than reflecting any strong specialisation.
For the rare aquarist who might keep this very recently described species, the genus's hardiness suggests it would accept the same undemanding regime as other small livebearers — quality flake and micro-pellets supplemented with small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia and newly hatched brine shrimp, together with some vegetable or algal matter. Direct husbandry data for the species itself are not yet available.
Mating
Like all members of the family Poeciliidae, Phalloceros circummontanus reproduces by internal fertilisation. The male transfers sperm to the female using the gonopodium, the rod-like intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — the very structure that gives the genus its name. There is no egg-laying and no external spawning; fertilisation happens inside the female, and the developing young are carried internally until birth.
The fine details of the male copulatory apparatus are taxonomically central in this species. The original description highlights a hook in the gonopodial appendix and, in the smallest mature males, a rounded posterior flap on that appendix — structures that, alongside the caudally oriented female urogenital papilla, form part of the diagnostic evidence separating P. circummontanus from its former complex-mates. Such species-specific gonopodial morphology is typical of poeciliids, where the geometry of the male organ and the female genital region often co-vary and help isolate closely related species.
Species-specific courtship behaviour has not been documented for this 2025-described fish. In small Phalloceros and related poeciliids more generally, males pursue females persistently and mating is frequent rather than tied to elaborate nest-building or territory defence. No superfetation — the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages seen in some poeciliids — has been documented as a defining trait of this species; the available data are sparse on its reproductive timing.
Breeding
Phalloceros circummontanus is viviparous, as are all the Poeciliinae: after internal fertilisation the female carries the embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. The embryos of Phalloceros are understood to be lecithotrophic — nourished by their own yolk reserves during gestation rather than fed directly by the mother through a placenta-like structure — which is the ancestral and most widespread provisioning mode among the New World livebearers.
Brood size and gestation length have not been specifically reported for this newly described species, and the cache notes the data as sparse. By analogy with small congeners, modest broods of a few to a few dozen young, born fully formed and immediately able to swim and feed, would be expected, with reproduction likely tied to the warmer, more productive part of the year in these highland streams. The species' high biological resilience — FishBase estimates a population doubling time of under 15 months — is consistent with the steady, repeated production of small broods typical of the genus.
No aquarium breeding accounts exist for P. circummontanus, again a consequence of its very recent description in 2025. Were it bred in captivity, the general livebearer pattern would apply: newborn fry need immediate cover, since adults of small poeciliids readily eat their own young, and dense planting or separation of the fry would be the route to raising good numbers.
In the aquarium
Phalloceros circummontanus is, for now, essentially an ichthyological rather than an aquarium fish: described only in 2025 from a split of the Phalloceros harpagos complex, it has no established hobby presence and no species-specific care literature. Any husbandry guidance therefore rests on the general behaviour of small Phalloceros livebearers, which are typically small, peaceful, hardy and undemanding fish well suited to quiet community or species setups.
One husbandry point follows directly from the species' natural habitat. Unlike the warm-water guppies and mollies, P. circummontanus comes from cool-to-temperate highland streams around the Serra da Mantiqueira and Serra do Mar, so it would likely prefer cooler, well-oxygenated water than tropical livebearers tolerate, with good flow and cleanliness mattering more than precise chemistry given the range of clear, black and turbid waters it occupies in the wild.
Because hard data for this specific taxon are sparse, the honest position is that its aquarium requirements are inferred rather than documented. An aquarist encountering it should treat it as a small, cool-water, peaceful livebearer and prioritise stable, clean, oxygen-rich conditions, while recognising that detailed care parameters for the species have not yet been published.
Conservation
Phalloceros circummontanus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2025: the taxon is too new for a dedicated Red List assessment to have been carried out, and FishBase accordingly records its status as Not Evaluated. There is therefore no formal global conservation category, threat analysis or population trend assigned to it at present.
What can be said is positive on the resilience side: the species shows high biological resilience, with an estimated minimum population doubling time of under 15 months, and it carries low vulnerability to fishing pressure and no fisheries interest — it is a small, harmless stream fish of no commercial value. These traits suggest a fish able to rebuild populations quickly where habitat remains intact.
The more meaningful conservation considerations are habitat-based. As a highland-stream endemic restricted to the upper rio Paraná, upper rio Paraíba do Sul and southeastern Brazilian coastal headwaters, its fortunes are tied to the health of those drainages — a region under pressure from urbanisation, agriculture and water extraction. Until a formal assessment exists, the prudent reading is that a narrowly distributed highland endemic warrants attention to its catchments, even though no specific threat has yet been documented for it.
