Poeciliopsis elongata is a slender, brackish-water livebearer of the Pacific coast of Central America, where it gathers in large schools among the mangroves and salt pans of Costa Rica and Panama. Unlike the familiar guppies and platies of the aquarium trade, it is a creature of turbid estuarine margins rather than freshwater streams — a euryhaline detritivore that ranges from fresh river mouths into hypersaline pans. It is also a placental livebearer of the highest order, nourishing its developing young through a maternal connection rather than a yolk, and it carries a conservation story tied directly to the loss of the mangroves it depends on.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis elongata was first described by Albert Günther in 1866, originally placed in the genus Poecilia; the species also passed through the genus Mollienesia in the older literature before being settled in Poeciliopsis. Because the species was moved out of its original genus, the describing authority is written in parentheses — (Günther, 1866) — following the conventions of zoological nomenclature. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid fish names, recognises Poeciliopsis elongata as the valid name within the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers of the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus Poeciliopsis is a large and well-studied group of small American livebearers, several of which are famous in biology for their unusual reproductive systems, including all-female unisexual lineages that reproduce by hybridogenesis. Poeciliopsis elongata itself is a conventional sexual species, but it shares the genus's defining feature of internal fertilisation. The genus name is built from the same root as Poecilia — the Greek poikilos, "many-coloured" or "varied" — combined with opsis, "appearance," so that Poeciliopsis means roughly "resembling Poecilia."

Morphology

As its specific epithet announces, Poeciliopsis elongata is an elongate, slender-bodied poeciliid, more streamlined than the deep-bodied mollies and platies. FishBase records a maximum length of about 5 in total length, making it a relatively large member of its family, though most individuals seen in schools are considerably smaller. The body is adapted to life in shallow, turbid surface waters, and the fish is generally plain in colour — a green-tinged silvery fish, reflected in its German common name Grüner Kärpfling, "green livebearer."

Like all poeciliids, the species shows the sexual dimorphism characteristic of the family. Males are smaller than females and bear a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — used to transfer sperm internally. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, particularly when carrying young. Detailed published descriptions of fin counts and colour pattern for this species are sparse in the cached sources, so finer morphological points are best treated as data-sparse rather than asserted with false precision.

Habitat

Poeciliopsis elongata is a fish of the eastern Central Pacific coast, confined to the Pacific slope of Costa Rica and Panama. It is a benthopelagic, estuarine species that forms large schools among the mangroves of river mouths and estuaries, and it is also abundant in coastal salt pans. It favours turbid, shallow surface waters, typically at depths of only zero to two metres, where it grazes the ooze and detritus of the substrate and water surface.

The species is markedly euryhaline — strikingly tolerant of a wide range of salinities. It occurs in fresh water, in brackish estuarine water, and even in hypersaline salt pans, a physiological flexibility that lets it exploit the shifting, harsh conditions of the mangrove fringe that many fishes cannot. FishBase reports a tropical temperature range of about 75–82 °F, a pH of roughly 7.2 to 8.0, and hard water (around 10 to 30 dH), consistent with the alkaline, mineral-rich conditions of coastal brackish habitats. Its range is geographically restricted, with the IUCN estimating an area of occupancy of under 2,0 mi².

Feeding

Poeciliopsis elongata is a detritivore and micro-omnivore of the mangrove and estuary floor. The primary published accounts describe it ingesting ooze and detritus — the organic sediment and biofilm that accumulate in shallow, turbid coastal waters — and its diet also includes zooplankton and insects taken from the water column and surface. This generalist, low-trophic-level feeding fits a fish that schools in nutrient-rich but visually murky estuarine margins.

In the wild the species' near-constant grazing on detritus and small drifting items makes it an efficient processor of the abundant organic matter that mangroves export. No specialised feeding apparatus or unusual diet is reported in the cached sources beyond this detritivorous omnivory, so the picture is best left at that: an adaptable bottom-and-surface grazer rather than a specialist predator.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis elongata is internal, as in all poeciliids. The male inseminates the female using the gonopodium, the modified anal fin that serves as an intromittent organ; fertilisation takes place inside the female's body rather than externally over a spawning site. This internal fertilisation is the foundational trait of the live-bearing toothcarps and the reason males and females differ so markedly in form.

The cached sources do not record the detailed courtship behaviour of this particular species — whether it relies on display, on sneak copulation, or on the sperm-storage and superfetation seen in some of its relatives. Many Poeciliopsis are notable for superfetation, the ability to carry several broods at different developmental stages simultaneously, but this should not be asserted for P. elongata without a direct source. What is documented is that the species is a true viviparous livebearer with internal fertilisation; the finer points of its mating system remain data-sparse.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis elongata is described in the primary literature as a truly viviparous fish in which the embryo derives nearly all of its nourishment from the mother. In other words, it is a highly matrotrophic, placental livebearer: rather than provisioning her eggs with a large yolk before fertilisation, the female supplies nutrients to the developing embryos throughout gestation by way of a maternal–embryonic connection analogous to a placenta. This places the species at the matrotrophic extreme of poeciliid reproduction, in contrast to the lecithotrophic, yolk-dependent development seen in fishes such as the guppy.

The female gives birth to fully formed, free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. Published figures for gestation length and brood size are not available in the cached sources, so these are best treated as data-sparse rather than estimated. What can be stated with confidence is the reproductive mode — viviparous, placental, strongly matrotrophic — which is itself one of the more biologically remarkable features of this otherwise modest estuarine fish.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis elongata is essentially absent from the ornamental aquarium hobby. It is a brackish-to-hypersaline mangrove and estuary specialist with no significant trade or established care literature, and dedicated care sheets for it are not available. Any husbandry guidance is therefore inferred from its wild parameters rather than from keeping experience.

Were it to be maintained, the species would require brackish, hard, alkaline water rather than the soft fresh water of a typical community tank — a temperature of roughly 75–82 °F, a pH around 7.2 to 8.0, and substantial mineral hardness — reflecting its euryhaline estuarine origins. As a schooling, surface-oriented fish it would need to be kept in groups with open swimming space, and as a detritivore it would take a varied omnivorous diet. Because reliable keeping information is lacking, prospective conditions should be read as an inference from habitat data, not a tested protocol.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis elongata is assessed as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List (version 3.1, criterion B), in an assessment dated 1 May 2008 and published in 2010. The assessment, by Iwamoto, Eschmeyer, Alvarado and Bussing, notes a restricted area of occupancy of under 2,0 mi², an unknown population trend, and a status of uncommon; it is flagged as needing updating, and an earlier evaluation had treated the species as Least Concern.

The principal threat is the loss of the mangrove habitat on which the species depends. Coastal development has driven substantial mangrove decline across its range — on the order of a quarter of mangrove cover lost over a fifteen-to-twenty-year span, with only around 2,124 mi² of mangrove remaining in Costa Rica and Panama by 2000. Because P. elongata schools and breeds among these estuarine mangroves and salt pans, its fortunes are tied directly to the fate of those coastal wetlands. There are no species-specific conservation measures in place, though a few small marine protected areas fall within its range. For a fish so dependent on a shrinking and threatened habitat, mangrove protection is effectively the conservation measure that matters most.
