Poeciliopsis gracilis was described by the Austrian naturalist Johann Jakob Heckel in 1848, and Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats the name as valid in the combination Poeciliopsis gracilis (Heckel, 1848) — the parentheses recording that the species was originally placed in a different genus before being moved into Poeciliopsis. It sits within the family Poeciliidae and subfamily Poeciliinae, the New World livebearers, in the order Cyprinodontiformes.
The genus Poeciliopsis is a Mesoamerican radiation of small livebearers ranging from the south-western United States and Mexico through Central America. It is best known scientifically for the unisexual, all-female biotypes that occur in some of its members — clonal and hybridogenetic lineages that have made the genus a model in the study of asexual reproduction in vertebrates — though P. gracilis itself is a conventional, bisexual species. In the hobby and in regional Spanish usage the fish is called the guatopote jarocho; "guatopote" is a general Mexican term applied to several small Poeciliopsis and related livebearers.
Morphology
Poeciliopsis gracilis is a small, slim-bodied livebearer, reaching a maximum of about 3.5 in total length, with most individuals — especially males — considerably smaller. The body is elongate and laterally compressed, in keeping with the specific epithet gracilis, "slender." Colour is generally muted compared with the gaudy domestic guppies and platies of the trade: a silvery to olive-tan ground, often with a row of dark blotches or short bars along the midline of the flank that give the "porthole" of the English common name.
As in all poeciliids, the sexes differ. The male is smaller and bears a gonopodium — a slender intromittent organ formed from modified rays of the anal fin — used to deliver sperm to the female. Females are larger and deeper-bodied, particularly when gravid, and frequently show a dark patch toward the rear of the abdomen marking the developing brood. Beyond the gonopodium and the size difference, the species lacks the exaggerated finnage or saturated colour that selective breeding has produced in its more popular relatives; it is a plain, functional little fish well suited to the turbid, disturbed waters it favours.
Habitat
The native range of Poeciliopsis gracilis runs through Central America from southern Mexico to Honduras, spanning both Atlantic (Caribbean) and Pacific slope drainages, roughly between latitudes 23 N and 13 N. Within that range it is a fish of warm lowland fresh waters and is notably associated with disturbed and artificial habitats — irrigation canals, ditches, and slow-moving streams — where it can be abundant. FishBase records it as freshwater, benthopelagic and non-migratory.
Its environmental envelope is broad and tropical: temperatures in the range of roughly 24 to 28 C, a pH span of about 6.5 to 7.8, and tolerance of hardness up to around 25 dH. This combination of warmth-loving physiology and tolerance of degraded, canal-type water is the key to the species' ecological story. It is exactly the profile that lets a small livebearer thrive where many native fishes cannot, and it underlies both the species' security in its homeland and its recurrent appearance as a translocated and potentially invasive fish elsewhere. United States agency screenings (USFWS, USGS) document its capacity to colonise artificial waterways far outside the native Mesoamerican range, including a population that established in canal systems of Riverside County, California, though that introduction may no longer persist.
Feeding
Like most small poeciliids, Poeciliopsis gracilis is an opportunistic omnivore, taking whatever the sluggish, often nutrient-rich waters it inhabits provide: algae and detritus, diatoms, and small aquatic invertebrates and insect larvae. Life in canals and ditches — habitats rich in mosquito larvae and other small drifting prey — suits a generalist micro-predator, and this dietary flexibility is part of what allows the species to colonise disturbed and artificial waters so readily.
Detailed dietary studies specific to this species are sparse, so finer feeding behaviour is best inferred from its close relatives and its general poeciliid biology rather than asserted. In captivity it would be expected to behave as other small livebearers do — accepting good-quality flake, micro-pellets, and small live or frozen foods such as Daphnia and brine shrimp, with a share of algal or vegetable matter — but the porthole livebearer is rarely kept as an ornamental, and published aquarium husbandry notes for it are limited.
Mating
Reproduction in Poeciliopsis gracilis is internal and viviparous, the defining trait of the poeciliid livebearers. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male uses his gonopodium, the modified anal fin, to transfer sperm, so there is no external spawning or egg-laying. As in related livebearers, courtship and mating are male-driven, the smaller males pursuing and attempting to inseminate the larger females rather than defending territory or constructing any kind of nest.
Female poeciliids of many genera, Poeciliopsis included, can store viable sperm internally and produce a succession of broods from limited mating opportunities — a reproductive insurance that helps small founding populations establish quickly, which is consistent with this species' demonstrated knack for colonising new waters. Some members of the wider livebearer family also show superfetation, the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages; the extent to which P. gracilis itself relies on sperm storage or superfetation is not well documented in the accessible literature, so it is noted here as a possibility rather than a confirmed feature of this species.
Breeding
Poeciliopsis gracilis is a true livebearer: after internal fertilisation the female carries the developing embryos and gives birth to free-swimming young rather than laying eggs. FishBase records broods of roughly 10 to 50 young, with sexual maturity reached at about three months of age — a fast, prolific reproductive cycle typical of small poeciliids and well matched to the warm, productive lowland waters the species occupies.
That life history — early maturity, repeated live-born broods, and high resilience (FishBase estimates a population doubling time of under 15 months) — is precisely what makes the porthole livebearer such an effective colonist. A handful of founders can build a population rapidly, which is why the species recurs in invasive-risk assessments despite being unremarkable in the ornamental trade. As with other livebearers, newborn fry are fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, and would require cover from predation; detailed captive-breeding accounts specific to this species, however, are scarce.
In the aquarium
Poeciliopsis gracilis is only a minor presence in the aquarium hobby. FishBase notes it features in the commercial aquarium trade and supports a minor local fishery within its range, but it is not a mainstream ornamental and is far less often seen than guppies, platies, mollies or swordtails. It is most likely to interest specialist livebearer keepers and those drawn to less-decorated, wild-type Mesoamerican fishes rather than aquarists seeking colour.
Where it is kept, its requirements would track its wild tolerances: warm water in the mid-20s Celsius, neutral to slightly alkaline chemistry around pH 6.5 to 7.8, and moderate to hard water, in a well-filtered tank with cover. It is a hardy, undemanding fish by nature — qualities that make it forgiving in captivity. The single most important caution is not about the tank but about the outflow: this is a proven colonist of artificial waterways, screened by United States agencies as a potential invasive and historically established outside its native range. Specimens should never be released into local waters, and unwanted fish should be rehomed responsibly rather than turned loose.
Conservation
Poeciliopsis gracilis is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. The species is wide-ranging and abundant across its Central American range and is tolerant of disturbed habitats, including irrigation canals and other artificial waters, so it faces no major threats at the species level. This stands in deliberate contrast to many of its narrowly endemic goodeid and poeciliid relatives in the same region, a number of which are threatened or endangered by habitat loss and introduced species.
The conservation interest in this fish therefore runs largely the other way. Its hardiness and live-bearing fecundity have made it a translocated species: it has been moved beyond its native range and recorded as introduced in non-native waters, including a once-established population in canals of Riverside County, California (Mearns 1975; Shapovalov et al. 1981), and it is the subject of United States ecological-risk screenings as a potential invasive. For an aquarist the responsible stance is straightforward — keep it if you wish, but never release it; an adaptable lowland livebearer like this one can establish itself in warm artificial waterways all too easily.
