Taxonomy & naming
Skiffia francesae was described by D. I. Kingston in 1978 in the journal Copeia, on the basis of an adult male holotype (UMMZ 201177, 1 in SL) collected by Robert R. Miller and J. M. Fitzsimons on 22 February 1970 from the Río Teuchitlán, just east of the town of Teuchitlán in the upper Río Ameca basin of Jalisco, Mexico. The specific epithet honours Frances H. Miller (Fran Voorhees Hubbs Miller, 1919–1987), an American ichthyologist and the wife of R. R. Miller; the common English name follows it as "golden skiffia," while in Mexico the fish is the "tiro dorado." Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes treats Skiffia francesae Kingston, 1978 as the valid name.
The genus Skiffia was erected by S. E. Meek in 1902, named for Frederick J. V. Skiff, the first director of the Field Columbian Museum. It belongs to the family Goodeidae and the subfamily Goodeinae — the splitfins or "goodeids," a group of livebearing toothcarps (order Cyprinodontiformes) endemic to the highlands of central Mexico and the Mesa Central. Skiffia is a small genus of compact, deep-bodied algae-grazers; S. francesae is closely allied to the splotched skiffia, S. multipunctata, with which it shares much of its range. The two are estimated to have diverged only recently in geological terms, and some workers have argued that francesae is best treated as a dwarf form of multipunctata rather than a full species — but the prevailing treatment, and the one used by the conservation literature, recognises it as distinct.
Morphology
Skiffia francesae is a small, short, deep-bodied fish with an oval cross-section, reaching a maximum of about 2 in total length (roughly 1.5 in standard length in the largest measured specimens). The head is wedge-shaped with characteristically upturned lips, and both rows of jaw teeth are bifid — adaptations for scraping algae and aufwuchs from hard surfaces. Meristic counts run to 15–17 dorsal soft rays, 14–15 anal soft rays, and 30–35 vertebrae.
The sexes differ markedly. Courting males carry bright gold flanks overlain with a grey cast that intensifies during display, a black crescent at the base of the caudal peduncle, and enlarged, notched or serrated dorsal and anal fins. Females and juveniles are far plainer: grey-green, flecked with small black spots, and with clear, unmodified fins. The diagnostic male feature is the goodeine "splitfin" or andropodium — the first six or seven anal-fin rays are shortened and set off from the rest of the fin by a distinct notch, the modified rays folding into a fleshy dermal pocket. This structure, unique to the Goodeinae, is the splitfin equivalent of the gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers and is used to transfer sperm to the female internally.
Habitat
The golden skiffia is endemic to Jalisco, Mexico, and is known historically from two areas within the upper Río Ameca / Río Teuchitlán system. The type subpopulation occupied the Río Teuchitlán in the upper Ameca headwaters; a second, separate subpopulation in the Laguna de Sayula basin (an El Molino spring pond near Cuyacapan) was discovered only in 2007 by Omar Domínguez-Domínguez and dried out in the 2010 drought. Both subpopulations are now Extinct in the Wild.
In its former Teuchitlán habitat, as documented by Miller and Fitzsimons in the 1970s, the fish lived in quiet, thermally warmed, clear-to-murky water with only a slight current, over a deep mud substrate mixed with rocks, silt and sand, among stands of aquatic plants including Eichhornia, Pistia, Ceratophyllum and Potamogeton. It preferred shallow water, generally less than half a metre deep, with recorded temperatures of roughly 75–79 °F (FishBase gives a broader 70–81 °F range for the species). Over the following decades this habitat was heavily degraded: water extraction, pollution, fragmentation of the springs, and conversion of parts of the system to a water-recreation area, together with the introduction of non-native fishes, drove the wild population to extinction.
Feeding
Skiffia francesae is a specialised herbivore and aufwuchs-grazer. Its wedge-shaped head, upturned lips and bifid teeth are all suited to rasping algae from rocks and plant surfaces near the bottom, and its gut is long — two to three times the body length — as is typical of plant-feeding fishes. Analyses of gut contents show a diet dominated by pennate (benthic) diatoms together with filamentous algae, with only occasional animal items such as a snail or stray pollen grains; the species sits at a low trophic level of about 2.3.
In the aquarium the golden skiffia should be fed a predominantly plant-based diet that respects this natural grazing habit. Aquarists offer algae-based and vegetable foods — including blanched vegetables — supplemented with small live and frozen items such as water fleas (Daphnia) and brine shrimp nauplii, and a good-quality flake. A surface for natural algal growth, and plenty of it, suits the fish well; an over-rich, meat-heavy diet does not match its biology.
Mating
Like all goodeids, Skiffia francesae practises internal fertilisation, but it does so without the gonopodium of the poeciliid livebearers. Instead the male uses the andropodium — the notched, shortened front rays of the anal fin (the "splitfin") — to deliver sperm to the female. Courtship is a visual affair: the male's gold flanks and grey display cast intensify, and he presents his enlarged, notched dorsal and anal fins to the female, the black crescent at the tail base adding to the signal.
Because the species survives only in captivity, its courtship has been observed mostly in aquaria, where breeding is seasonal and temperature-cued. Spawning typically begins as water warms toward and above 68 °F in spring; a cooler winter rest below about 68 °F for two to three months pauses reproduction and conditions the fish for the following season. Unlike the sperm-storing poeciliids, goodeids do not show prolonged sperm storage or superfetation — broods are produced one at a time, following a discrete seasonal mating, rather than as overlapping successive litters from a single insemination.
Breeding
The golden skiffia is a true viviparous livebearer of the matrotrophic goodeid type. After internal fertilisation the female nourishes the developing embryos directly through trophotaeniae — ribbon-like rosette structures that extend from the embryo's vent and function as a placenta-like organ, drawing nutrients from the mother across the wall of the ovarian cavity. This is a fundamentally different, and far more maternally invested, mode of live-bearing than the lecithotrophic (yolk-fed) birth of guppies and mollies.
Reproductive data come largely from Kingston's original work, which documented fourteen broods from a single wild-caught female. Brood size is modest — a mean of about nine young per brood, ranging from five to fifteen, occasionally up to twenty — and gestation runs roughly 55 to 60 days. Newborns are large and well developed, around 0.5 in SL at birth, reflecting the heavy maternal provisioning, and fish mature at about five months of age. In captivity the fish breed readily given a seasonal temperature cycle, and the survival of the species today rests entirely on these captive broods. A recognised concern is inbreeding: many of the surviving lines descend from few founders and have been documented to show the reduced vigour of inbred stock, which makes careful studbook-style management of the captive population a conservation priority.
In the aquarium
Skiffia francesae is a fish kept almost entirely within a conservation-minded community of specialist hobbyists — the Goodeid Working Group and allied aquarists in Mexico, the United States and Europe — rather than a general trade species, and the husbandry that has kept it alive reflects that. It does best in a tank with a large footprint and low height (around 10 in), of at least roughly 15 US gal, that reproduces its native conditions: moderate current, high oxygenation (8 mg/L or more), and dense vegetation with rocks and roots to graze and shelter among.
Water quality is managed aggressively, with large weekly water changes of 60–80%, in keeping with the goodeid reputation for sensitivity to dissolved wastes. The diet should be predominantly herbivorous (algae and blanched vegetables) with modest live or frozen supplements. Crucially for breeding, the fish benefit from a cool winter rest below 68 °F for two to three months, which pauses spawning and mimics the seasonal cycle of their highland home before warming triggers reproduction in spring. The overriding husbandry goal with this species is not display but population maintenance — keeping genetically diverse, well-fed, well-watered lines going so that the captive ark does not narrow further.
Conservation
Skiffia francesae is listed as Extinct in the Wild (EW) on the IUCN Red List (species ID 20285), assessed on 18 April 2018, and is categorised as "extinguido" (E) under Mexico's NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. It had not been recorded in the wild since the late 1990s, and a 2019 review by Lyons and colleagues found no records since 2008. The species was, in effect, lost from nature before science had finished describing it: the decline of the Río Teuchitlán population was driven by water extraction, pollution, fragmentation and conversion of its springs, and competition and predation from introduced poeciliids such as platies (Xiphophorus maculatus). The second, Sayula-basin subpopulation discovered in 2007 was gone by 2010, dried out in drought.
What keeps the golden skiffia from total extinction is captivity. Surviving lines are maintained in aquaria across Mexico, North America and Europe, and the species helped inspire Ivan Dibble's pioneering "Fish Ark" conservation-breeding work in Mexico. In a notable reversal of its history, conservationists working with Mexican partners — including Omar Domínguez-Domínguez and the Universidad Michoacana — have begun returning captive-bred golden skiffias to the Río Teuchitlán, the same river from which the holotype came. That reintroduction follows the earlier, encouraging releases of Zoogoneticus tequila and Notropis amecae into the same restored stretch of river, and makes Skiffia francesae a test case for whether an Extinct-in-the-Wild Mexican livebearer can be brought home.
