Poeciliopsis viriosa is a small, robust live-bearing toothcarp of the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico, where it inhabits the warm streams and drainages running from the Río Ameca basin in Jalisco and southern Nayarit north to the Río Mocorito in Sinaloa. Described by the American ichthyologist Robert Rush Miller in 1960, it carries the apt English name "chubby livebearer" and the Spanish "guatopote gordito" — both nods to its stout, deep little body. It is a Mexican endemic of the genus Poeciliopsis, a livebearer little known in the aquarium hobby but secure in the wild, and a member of one of the most biologically interesting livebearer genera in the Americas.

Taxonomy & naming

Poeciliopsis viriosa was described by Robert Rush Miller in 1960, one of many North American freshwater fishes that Miller — the leading ichthyologist of the Mexican and south-western United States fish fauna in the twentieth century — named over his long career. Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, recognises Poeciliopsis viriosa Miller, 1960 as valid, placing it in the genus Poeciliopsis within the subfamily Poeciliinae of the family Poeciliidae, the New World livebearers, in the order Cyprinodontiformes.

The genus Poeciliopsis is a large and biologically remarkable assemblage of small livebearers distributed from the south-western United States through Mexico and into Central America. It is best known to biologists for the diversity of reproductive strategies it contains: several congeners exhibit superfetation (the simultaneous carrying of broods at different developmental stages) and varying degrees of maternal provisioning, and the genus famously includes all-female, sperm-dependent unisexual "hybridogenetic" lineages. Against that backdrop P. viriosa is one of the more conventional members — a bisexual, lecithotrophic (yolk-feeding) livebearer rather than one of the placental or unisexual specialists.

The species epithet derives from the Latin viriosus, meaning vigorous, robust or forceful — a reference to the fish's sturdy build. The genus name Poeciliopsis combines the Greek poikilos, "with many colours" or "varied," with opsis, "appearance," so the binomial reads roughly as "the robust one of varied appearance."

Morphology

Poeciliopsis viriosa is a small fish with pronounced sexual size dimorphism. Females reach roughly 2.5 in in total length, while males are markedly smaller — to about 1.5 in — so the larger, deeper-bodied sex in any group is the female. The common names "chubby livebearer" and guatopote gordito capture the species' impression: a comparatively stout, deep-bodied little poeciliid rather than a slender one.

In coloration the species is modest and unshowy by aquarium-trade standards, in the silvery-olive register typical of wild Poeciliopsis rather than the saturated pigment of selectively bred guppies or platies. Detailed published descriptions of meristics and pigmentation trace to Miller's original 1960 account and to standard livebearer references such as Wischnath's Atlas of Livebearers of the World; beyond size and overall build, fine morphological detail for this species is data sparse in the general literature.

As in all poeciliids, the defining structure of the male is the gonopodium — the anal fin modified into a slender, mobile intromittent organ used to transfer sperm internally. Its presence distinguishes mature males at a glance, alongside their smaller size, while females are plainer and deeper-bodied and show a darkened gravid region when carrying young.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico. Its range runs from the Río Ameca basin in Jalisco and southern Nayarit northward through the coastal drainages of Nayarit and Sinaloa as far as the Río Mocorito in Sinaloa. This places it squarely within the freshwater systems of Mexico's western coastal plain and the lower reaches of the rivers descending from the Sierra Madre Occidental toward the Gulf of California.

Poeciliopsis viriosa is a freshwater, benthopelagic fish of tropical lowland waters. FishBase records a preferred temperature span of roughly 75–82 °F, a pH of about 6.5–7.2, and water hardness in the region of 3–10 dH — that is, warm, near-neutral, soft to moderately hard water, consistent with the small streams, pools and slow drainages of the Pacific coastal lowlands it occupies.

Like many small Mexican livebearers, it tends to occupy shallow, vegetated and marginal habitats where small invertebrates and algal growth are abundant and where its live-bearing reproduction allows it to maintain populations even in seasonally variable waters. Precise microhabitat and water-quality data across the full range are sparse in the published literature.

Feeding

No detailed dietary study specific to Poeciliopsis viriosa is reflected in the general references, but its ecology is that of a typical small poeciliid micro-omnivore. Fish of this genus and size feed opportunistically on algae and biofilm, organic detritus, diatoms, and small aquatic invertebrates — including insect larvae and micro-crustaceans — taken from vegetation, the substrate and the water column.

In captivity the species would be expected to behave like other hardy livebearers: an undemanding feeder accepting good-quality flake and micro-pellets alongside small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and microworm, with a share of algal or vegetable matter benefiting condition and color. As with related livebearers, frequent small feedings suit a continuous grazer better than infrequent large meals, and overfeeding is the more likely husbandry error than underfeeding.

Because this is a rarely kept species with little dedicated hobby literature, feeding recommendations here are extrapolated from the well-documented requirements of the genus rather than drawn from species-specific accounts.

Mating

Reproduction in Poeciliopsis viriosa is internal and live-bearing, as in all members of the family Poeciliidae. Fertilisation occurs inside the female: the male uses his gonopodium, the modified anal fin, to transfer sperm, and as in many livebearers females are able to store viable sperm internally and produce successive broods from a single mating.

Males of small Poeciliopsis typically pursue females and attempt copulation more or less continuously rather than defending territories, combining brief courtship approaches with rapid mating attempts. Detailed behavioural observations specific to P. viriosa are sparse, but the general pattern of constant male pursuit, female sperm storage and internal fertilisation is characteristic of the genus.

The genus Poeciliopsis is a noted model in the study of livebearer reproduction precisely because its species span a spectrum from simple yolk-feeding to advanced placentotrophy, and because some lineages show superfetation or are all-female and sperm-dependent. Poeciliopsis viriosa, however, is one of the conventional bisexual, lecithotrophic species: superfetation and placental provisioning are not documented for it, and reproduction follows the straightforward livebearer pattern.

Breeding

Poeciliopsis viriosa is viviparous. After internal fertilisation the female carries the developing young and gives birth to free-swimming fry rather than laying eggs. FishBase records a gestation of roughly 28 days, after which the female produces a brood of about 10 to 30 young, rarely more — a moderate brood size typical of a small livebearer of this body size.

The young are lecithotrophic, nourished chiefly by the yolk supplied within the egg rather than by a placental connection from the mother; this distinguishes P. viriosa from the placental, maternally provisioning members of its genus. The newborn fry emerge fully formed and able to swim and feed immediately, as in other poeciliids.

No dedicated captive-breeding account for this species appears in the standard references, but its requirements would mirror those of other hardy livebearers: in the aquarium, fry need immediate cover, since adults — including the mother — will eat them, so dense planting or separation is used to raise good numbers. The species' "High" resilience rating on FishBase (a minimum population doubling time of under 15 months) reflects exactly this productive, fast-maturing live-bearing strategy.

In the aquarium

Poeciliopsis viriosa is essentially an enthusiast's and specialist's fish rather than a trade staple — it is not a fancy ornamental and is uncommon in the general aquarium hobby, with no dedicated mainstream husbandry profile located for it. Where it is kept, it is the province of livebearer specialists and groups such as the American Livebearer Association who maintain wild Mexican poeciliids.

Its husbandry can be inferred confidently from the genus and its recorded water preferences. It is a small, hardy, peaceful fish best kept in a group in a planted aquarium with warm water around 75–82 °F, a near-neutral pH of roughly 6.5–7.2, and soft to moderately hard water (about 3–10 dH). As with other livebearers, a sex ratio skewed toward females reduces the harassment that results from constant male pursuit, and a well-planted tank both suits the fish and gives fry a chance to survive.

Because this is a rarely traded species, the practical conservation-minded note is the usual one for livebearers: maintained bloodlines of wild Mexican poeciliids have value, and aquarists keeping them should preserve clean, locality-true stock rather than hybridising them with other Poeciliopsis or releasing them into local waters.

Conservation

Poeciliopsis viriosa is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment dated 2018). The species is widespread across its native range on the Pacific slope of north-western Mexico, from the Río Ameca basin north to the Río Mocorito, and is not currently considered to face threats sufficient to place it in a higher category of extinction risk. It is listed as harmless and is not evaluated under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species.

The broader context, however, warrants caution. The freshwater fishes of western Mexico — including many endemic livebearers and goodeids of the same coastal and interior drainages — are under sustained pressure from habitat loss, water extraction, pollution and introduced species, and several relatives have declined sharply. A Least Concern listing reflects current range and abundance, not immunity from these regional pressures.

For aquarists the responsible posture is straightforward: keep wild-derived stock cleanly and locality-true where possible, support specialist livebearer conservation programmes that maintain Mexican poeciliids, and never release captive fish into wild waters. Maintaining genetically clean captive populations of under-kept species like this one is a small but real contribution to conserving the diversity of the Mexican livebearer fauna.
