Aborichthys elongatus, the red-tailed squirrel loach, is a slender little nemacheilid known from the fast, cool, pebble-bottomed streams of the eastern Himalayan foothills around Darjeeling in India. It is a true stone loach: a bold, highly active bottom-dweller built for clinging and darting in strong current, patterned with broad dark bands and marked with a distinctive black spot at the base of the tail. Genuinely rare in the aquarium trade because its range is remote and narrow, it rewards keepers who can supply strong flow and high oxygen with an energetic, sociable little digger — but like most stone and brook loaches it is essentially unknown to have bred in captivity.

Taxonomy & naming

Aborichthys elongatus was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1921, from material collected in the Reang River of Darjeeling District in the eastern Himalayas. It sits in the genus Aborichthys, a small group of slender stone loaches restricted to the eastern Himalaya and adjacent hill streams of northeastern India, placed within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.

The Catalog of Fishes recognises Aborichthys elongatus as a valid species with Hora as sole author. It has not been swept up in the wider generic reshuffling that has affected many other former Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus species over the past two decades, and the genus placement remains stable.

Morphology

This is a slim, elongate loach true to its species name, with a rounded head and three pairs of barbels around the mouth typical of the family. The body carries a series of dark bands that are broader than the pale interspaces between them, strongest across the caudal peduncle, and the rounded tail fin bears two short whitish bands crossed by a conspicuous black spot at its upper base — a useful field mark for the species. The lateral line runs complete along the flank.

FishBase gives a maximum length of 3 in standard length, making this a genuinely small fish even by loach standards. Like other nemacheilids it has tiny, deeply set scales rather than the coarse armour of larger loaches, leaving it comparatively delicate-skinned — a point that matters for handling and medication.

Habitat

Aborichthys elongatus is confined to the eastern Himalayan foothill streams of Darjeeling and North Bengal, with records extending into Arunachal Pradesh in northeastern India. It lives in fast-flowing hill streams over beds of pebbles, stones, wood and leaf litter, in cool, clear, heavily oxygenated water typical of the region's rapids and riffle zones.

Loaches Online reports aquarium temperatures of 70–78 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5 with medium-soft to medium-hard water as suitable, consistent with a cool, well-aerated hill-stream habitat rather than a warm, still lowland one. This is not a blackwater or slow-water species — strong current and high dissolved oxygen are part of its basic biology.

Feeding

In the wild this is a bottom-foraging micro-predator, working the spaces between stones and leaf litter in fast water for small invertebrates. In the aquarium it is reported as an enthusiastic and aggressive feeder that takes flake, sinking pellets, and frozen foods such as bloodworm, mysis and chopped shrimp readily.

Because it competes vigorously for food, especially against slower tankmates, it does best with a mix of sinking foods offered in a way that reaches the whole group, rather than relying on food that lingers at the surface.

Mating

No detailed account of courtship or spawning behaviour for Aborichthys elongatus appears in the available sources. Loaches Online explicitly notes that the species is not bred in aquaria, and males are reported to occasionally spar over territory, settling into peaceful coexistence afterward — but this territorial behaviour has not been documented as leading to observed spawning in captivity. Data on wild reproductive behaviour is sparse for this genus generally.

Breeding

As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Aborichthys elongatus is not known to have been bred in home aquaria. Nemacheilids of this kind are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast water with no parental care, but no verified spawning account exists for this species in the sources consulted here.

Given the narrow, remote native range and the rarity of the fish in the trade, its reproductive biology in captivity remains essentially undocumented; keepers should not expect to breed it, and any claim otherwise should be treated with caution absent a credible published record.

In the aquarium

The red-tailed squirrel loach is described as a highly active digger that will excavate under rockwork and disturb an aquascape, so hardscape should be built directly on the tank floor rather than balanced on substrate that can be undermined. It needs strong water circulation and high oxygenation to thrive, with hiding places such as flat pebbles and slate slabs to retreat beneath.

Aquadiction's care notes describe it as a social species that does best in groups of five or more, showing more complex social interaction in numbers — echoing the obligate-group-living pattern seen across many loaches, even though this is a nemacheilid rather than a botiid. It reportedly coexists well with hillstream loaches, which share its taste for cool, fast, well-oxygenated water. As a near-scaleless fish it should be handled and medicated with the same caution given to other loaches: avoid copper-based treatments and use gentler, reduced doses where possible. It remains relatively rare in the trade owing to its remote natural range, so specimens seen for sale are worth sourcing from reputable suppliers.

Conservation

Aborichthys elongatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It is restricted to a narrow band of eastern Himalayan foothill streams in Darjeeling District and adjacent parts of North Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh, a range that, while limited, has not triggered a higher threat category in the current assessment.

Because its native habitat is remote and its aquarium presence is limited, there is no clear evidence of trade-driven pressure on wild populations; the more relevant long-term risks for eastern Himalayan hill-stream fishes generally are habitat degradation and altered flow regimes rather than collection for the aquarium trade.
