Loaches · names

Every name, resolved

A loach carries a current scientific binomial under the Catalog of Fishes and, usually, an English common name — “clown loach”, “yoyo loach”, “kuhli loach”, “dojo”, “hillstream loach”. Cobitoidea has been heavily reshuffled — the old catch-all Botia split into Chromobotia, Yasuhikotakia and kin, the kuhlis moved from Acanthophthalmus to Pangio, and many stone loaches still travel under Nemacheilus — so the same fish often carries more than one name. This index cross-references both layers — the 1,405 scientific names and 628 common names — and resolves each one to its species page.

Scientific name — the valid binomial under the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names. Common name — English vernacular and trade names recorded for the species, from “clown loach” to “weather loach”. Each entry is tagged with its group. Many little-known stone & brook loaches have no English name at all and appear by their binomial only.
