Bibarba wenliuensis is a blind, unpigmented cave loach known only from a single cave system in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. Described in 2020, it is one of three species in the small genus Bibarba, a member of the true-loach family Cobitidae, and it carries that family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine even though it has lost the eyes that most fish use to see the world. It is a strictly subterranean, subtropical species — not a fish anyone will ever keep, and not a fish that belongs in the hobby's usual coldwater-versus-tropical loach conversation, since it lives its whole life in the dark at a fairly stable, moderate temperature deep in karst groundwater.

Taxonomy & naming

Bibarba wenliuensis was described in 2020 by Yang, Chen & Li, placing it in the genus Bibarba within the subfamily Cobitinae, family Cobitidae — the true or spined loaches, order Cypriniformes. The genus Bibarba currently holds three known species, and molecular and morphological work treats B. wenliuensis as part of a lineage that includes a surface-dwelling congener, Bibarba bibarba, from the neighbouring Guangxi region, alongside another cave species, B. parvoculus. The pattern suggested by that work is that the cave-adapted species evolved from surface-dwelling Bibarba stock isolated in the karst groundwater of this part of southern China.

The genus name Bibarba reflects a defining feature shared across its species: two pairs of barbels around the mouth, fewer than in many other cobitid genera. The species epithet wenliuensis names the type locality, Wenliu Township in Qiubei County, Yunnan. As with much of Cobitidae, the surrounding karst region of Yunnan and Guangxi has proven to hold more diversity than older surveys captured, and this species was only formally recognised as science began cataloguing the area's cave fish fauna in detail.

Morphology

Bibarba wenliuensis is a small loach known from a holotype measuring 2 in standard length (2.5 in total length), placing it among the more modestly sized members of Cobitidae. Like its genus-mates it has two pairs of barbels, a scaleless head, small body scales, and a short lateral line. It carries the thick, short, bifid suborbital spine with a strong medio-lateral process that defines the genus — the same erectile spine, tucked in a groove below the eye, that gives the wider family Cobitidae its common name of spined loaches, even though in this species the eye behind it is gone. The caudal fin is emarginate (shallowly notched), the anus sits close to the anal fin, and there is a ventral adipose crest along the caudal peduncle. Males are reported smaller than females, with proportionally longer and thicker pectoral fins.

What sets this species apart, and what earns it a place among the world's most extreme cave fish, is its troglomorphism: the eyes are absent and body pigment is absent, leaving a pale, blind loach adapted to permanent darkness. This is a genuine evolutionary loss, not a colour variant or an artefact of captivity — it is the hallmark of an obligate cave-dweller (a troglobite) that has spent enough generations underground for eyes and pigment to become useless and be reduced away.

Habitat

The species is known only from its type locality: Huajiao Da Dong, a cave at Huajiao Village in Wenliu Township, Qiubei County, Yunnan Province, China, at roughly 1,843 ft elevation, within the Qingshujiang River basin of the Pearl River drainage. This is classic South China karst country — a landscape of limestone riddled with caves and underground streams — and the true subterranean habitat the species occupies within that cave system has not been described in detail beyond the collection record.

Because it lives underground, Bibarba wenliuensis experiences none of the strong seasonal light or temperature swings that shape surface loaches. Its likely surface relative, Bibarba bibarba, comes from subtropical East Asian karst streams in the neighbouring Guangxi/Yunnan region, and groundwater at this elevation and latitude in that part of China is expected to sit in a comparatively narrow, moderate subtropical band year-round rather than turning genuinely cold or genuinely warm. This is a data-sparse point — no direct water-chemistry survey of the cave is cited in the record — but it marks the species firmly as subtropical cave groundwater, not a coldwater temperate loach and not a warm tropical lowland one.

Feeding

No direct dietary study of Bibarba wenliuensis has been recorded. As a member of Cobitidae with the family's typical sand-and-sediment-sifting build, it most likely forages by feel and taste along the cave floor rather than by sight, using its barbels to detect small invertebrates, detritus and whatever organic material washes into or is produced within the cave system — the standard food base for obligate cave fish, which generally rely on bat guano, leaf litter carried in by floodwater, and small aquatic invertebrates rather than any primary production of their own.

This is inference from its family and cave habitat rather than a documented diet, and the record does not describe feeding behaviour directly. Data sparse.

Mating

Nothing has been recorded about courtship or spawning behaviour in Bibarba wenliuensis; it is known from a small series of preserved specimens collected at a single cave locality, not from field observation of live behaviour. Sexual dimorphism is limited to males reportedly being smaller-bodied than females with proportionally longer, thicker pectoral fins — a pattern noted across the genus rather than described specifically as a courtship signal in this species.

Breeding

There is no record of Bibarba wenliuensis being bred, or even observed spawning, anywhere — in the wild or in captivity. This is consistent with the broader picture across Cobitidae: spined and pond loaches that scatter adhesive eggs among plants have occasionally been spawned by hobbyists, but that record belongs almost entirely to hardy temperate species such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus. A troglobitic cave species living deep in Yunnan karst groundwater, known from a single type locality and never kept, sits entirely outside that picture. If it follows the general Cobitidae pattern it would be expected to scatter adhesive eggs with no parental care, but this has not been documented for the species and should be treated as inference, not fact.

In the aquarium

Bibarba wenliuensis is not an aquarium fish. It is not collected or traded, is known from a single cave system, and its extreme troglomorphic adaptations — no eyes, no pigment, a life built entirely around permanent darkness and stable groundwater conditions — make it wholly unsuited to captivity and irrelevant to any care discussion. Its value is scientific: it is a striking example of how far a fish can diverge from its surface relatives once isolated in karst groundwater, and it stands alongside its cave-dwelling congener B. parvoculus as one of the more extreme cave loaches described from southern China.

Conservation

Bibarba wenliuensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation status; here it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed category. It is known only from its single type locality in Qiubei County, Yunnan, which by itself signals a very restricted range typical of cave-endemic fish — a pattern the specialist cave-fish literature flags as "Too Limited Occurrence" for formal assessment.

Species restricted to a single cave system are inherently vulnerable: groundwater pollution, changes to cave hydrology, quarrying or tourism development at karst sites, and any disruption to the surface inputs (leaf litter, bat colonies) that feed a cave's food web can affect the entire known population at once. No population trend or specific threat has been documented for this species in the sources reviewed here, but its single-locality, subterranean existence make it a fish worth flagging for future assessment rather than assuming it is secure.
