Taxonomy & naming
Claea dabryi was described by the French naturalist Henri Sauvage in 1874. It sits in the genus Claea, a small assemblage of Chinese stone loaches erected within the family Nemacheilidae and centred on the upper Yangtze basin; the genus currently holds three recognized species — C. dabryi, C. minibarba and C. wulongensis — all endemic to China. As with much of the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex, the genus-level classification of these small Chinese stream loaches has been repeatedly revised as ichthyologists split the historic catch-all genera into narrower, better-supported groups; the Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Claea dabryi.
Nemacheilidae itself is the largest of the loach families, comprising several hundred mostly Eurasian species of small stream and brook loaches — a sprawling, still-being-sorted-out radiation that spans from the Middle East and Anatolia across Central and South Asia to China and Southeast Asia. Claea dabryi's mitochondrial genome has been sequenced in the scientific literature, which confirms its placement within Nemacheilidae (subfamily Nemacheilinae) alongside its close relatives.
Morphology
Claea dabryi is a small, elongate loach reaching a maximum reported length of about 4 in standard length, in keeping with the modest size typical of Nemacheilidae. As a nemacheilid it is built for life among stream-bed stones: a slender, subcylindrical body, a flattened belly for hugging the substrate, and barbels around the mouth used to feel out small invertebrate prey hidden in gravel. It is a benthic, bottom-dwelling fish of subtropical Asian streams, living among gravel and stones on the streambed.
Its water is clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated — the classic stone-loach environment — rather than the warm, still or blackwater conditions favoured by many tropical aquarium fish.
