Hedinichthys yarkandensis, the Kashgarian loach, is a stone loach endemic to the Tarim River basin of Xinjiang, in the far northwest of China — the largest inland (endorheic) river system in the country. It is a scaleless, bottom-living micro-predator built for the basin's slow, shallow, sediment-laden channels, and it has drawn scientific attention less for its looks than for its physiology: populations here tolerate real salinity and alkalinity stress and have been studied for how they cope with a warming, shrinking desert river. It is not an aquarium fish in any meaningful sense — it is essentially unknown to the hobby — and its home range is under mounting pressure from water extraction, invasive species and agricultural conversion.

Taxonomy & naming

Hedinichthys yarkandensis was first described in 1877 by Francis Day, hence the parenthesised authority. The species has had an unsettled taxonomic history typical of the Cobitoidea: it has also been treated as Triplophysa yarkandensis, with Hedinichthys regarded by some authors as a subgenus of the much larger genus Triplophysa. The Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, and this article follows Hedinichthys yarkandensis as given; readers encountering the species under Triplophysa (Hedinichthys) yarkandensis in older or regional literature are looking at the same fish.

It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, comprising hundreds of mostly small, clear-water species distributed from Europe across Asia. The common name "Kashgarian loach" refers to Kashgar (Kashi), a major city and oasis of the Tarim basin, reflecting the species' tight endemism to that drainage.

Morphology

As a nemacheilid, Hedinichthys yarkandensis has the typical stone-loach build: a slender, cylindrical, nearly scaleless body suited to holding position and foraging on the bottom of moving water. Sources are not consistent on standard-length figures, but the species is reported to reach roughly 12 in in total length, making it one of the larger stone loaches — appreciably bigger than the small streamside Nemacheilus and Schistura species most often kept in aquaria elsewhere in Asia.
