Heminoemacheilus parva is a small, poorly-known stone loach described in 2015 from karst cave streams in Guangxi, southeastern China. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the huge family of small, clear-water "stone" or "brook" loaches, and like many of its relatives it is known from a very narrow range and almost nothing beyond its original description — a genuinely data-sparse species rather than one with a settled aquarium or conservation profile. Its story took a further turn in 2023, when a phylogenetic revision of cave-dwelling Nemacheilidae found the genus Heminoemacheilus to be invalid and moved this species into a new genus, Karstsinnectes, as Karstsinnectes parvus.

Taxonomy & naming

Heminoemacheilus parva was described by Zhu & Zhu in 2015 within the family Nemacheilidae, the largest of the loach families and the home of the small, slender "stone" and "brook" loaches spread across Eurasia. The species name parva is Latin for "little," referring either to its slender build or to its shorter total length compared with its congeners — the type specimen measured about 1.5 in standard length against the 2–4 in range of other species placed in the genus at the time.

A 2023 phylogenetic study of cave-adapted Nemacheilidae found that Heminoemacheilus, as originally constructed, was not a valid natural grouping, and its species were moved into a newly erected genus, Karstsinnectes — a name built from "karst" (the water-eroded limestone terrain these fish live in), "Sin" (China), and the Greek nectes ("swimmer"). Under that revision this species is now properly Karstsinnectes parvus. This article keeps the original combination, Heminoemacheilus parva, as its heading, but readers researching the species further should expect to find more recent material filed under the new name.

Morphology

Little has been published on the external appearance of Heminoemacheilus parva beyond its original description. It is a small nemacheilid, with the type specimen just 1.5 in standard length — smaller than the other species that were originally grouped with it in Heminoemacheilus. Its placement among cave-dwelling Nemacheilidae in the 2023 revision that created Karstsinnectes points to a troglomorphic body plan shared by its closest relatives in that group, features such as reduced eyes and reduced or absent scaling associated with life in karst cave streams, though detailed morphological data specific to this species is sparse.

As a nemacheilid, it can be expected to share the family's general stone-loach build: an elongate, nearly cylindrical body suited to holding position in current, and the small or embedded scaling typical of the group. Data on any suborbital spine or other distinguishing features for this species specifically has not been located; this profile does not assert details beyond what has been documented.

Habitat

Heminoemacheilus parva is known from karst cave streams in the Hongshuihe, Zuojiang and Youjiang river basins of Guangxi Province in southeastern China — a landscape of water-eroded limestone riddled with underground watercourses. Based on the general pattern for Nemacheilidae — stone and brook loaches that typically scatter eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care — the species can be expected to follow the same egg-scattering mode, but this is an inference from its family, not a documented observation for this species.

Given its recent description (2015), its subsequent reclassification (2023), its narrow cave-stream range, and the complete absence of any aquarium trade record, it is honest to say breeding is essentially unstudied and almost certainly never attempted in captivity.

In the aquarium

Heminoemacheilus parva has no known presence in the aquarium hobby. It is a very recently described, narrow-range cave-stream endemic that appears never to have entered the trade, and no keeper-reported care parameters, tank sizes, or compatibility notes exist to draw on.

If its cave-stream habitat is any guide, a nemacheilid of this kind would need cool-to-moderate, exceptionally clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water — conditions that are demanding to replicate and a poor match for typical community tanks. As with all near-scaleless small loaches, caution with medications would be prudent should the species ever appear in captivity. Absent real husbandry data, this profile stops short of prescribing specific parameters it cannot support.

Conservation

Heminoemacheilus parva has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status.
