Taxonomy & naming
Homalopteroides avii was formally described by Randall and Page in 2014 in the journal Copeia, from specimens collected in the Balui River and Rajang River drainage of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. The species epithet honours Lawrence "Avi" Greenberg (1982–2011), a young naturalist, and the diagnostic lateral cephalic stripe was described by the authors as symbolising his gentle disposition.
The genus Homalopteroides belongs to the family Balitoridae, the hillstream and torrent loaches of South and Southeast Asia. An older generic name, Homaloptera, was applied to much of this group in earlier literature, and some older references and trade materials may use that combination; the current valid genus, recognised by the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), is Homalopteroides. The genus is closely related to other Bornean hillstream genera and is characterised by a distinctive suite of morphometric characters including a broader gape, a lateral cephalic stripe, and specific fin-ray and scale counts that distinguish it from congeners such as Homalopteroides smithi.
Morphology
Homalopteroides avii is a small fish, with the maximum recorded standard length at 2 in (roughly 2 in SL). The body form is quintessentially hillstream: strongly flattened top to bottom, with the head broad and the snout blunt. The paired pectoral and pelvic fins are fanned out horizontally and held close to the substrate, and together with the flattened belly they create the suction effect that lets the fish maintain position in fast current on smooth rock surfaces.
Diagnostic characters noted in the original description include a wider gape (28.5–33.3 percent of head length), a distinct lateral cephalic stripe, a relatively deeper caudal peduncle, 20–22 circumpeduncular scales, 9 pelvic-fin rays, 15 total pectoral-fin rays, and 43–45 lateral-line scales. These separate it from related Homalopteroides species within Borneo. The skin is nearly scaleless over much of the body — a trait shared with most hillstream loaches — which means it absorbs dissolved substances readily and is sensitive to copper-based and other medications.
Habitat
Homalopteroides avii is known from the Balui River and the broader Rajang River basin in Sarawak, on the island of Borneo. The Rajang is Sarawak's longest river and drains the interior highlands; its upper reaches and tributaries, including the Balui, flow fast, cold and clear over rock and gravel substrates before the rivers slow and widen in the lowlands.
This is a rheophilic species — a torrent specialist. It lives on exposed rock surfaces in fast-moving, highly oxygenated stream sections where few other fish can hold position. Water in these hill-stream habitats is typically cool relative to lowland Borneo, clean, with moderate to neutral pH, and extremely rich in dissolved oxygen. The biological surface of the rocks — the thin film of algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and associated micro-invertebrates known as aufwuchs or biofilm — is the fish's primary resource, and the entire body plan of Homalopteroides is an adaptation for staying on that surface while the current strips away anything not anchored to it.
Feeding
Homalopteroides avii is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its native torrent streams it rasps algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria and the micro-invertebrates associated with them from bare rock surfaces, using a specialised subterminal mouth. This is a very different feeding niche from that of most community fish: it is not a scavenger, not a midwater feeder, and not a fish that will accept floating or sinking pelleted foods without an established grazing surface to supplement them.
In the aquarium, the single greatest dietary danger for this species is starvation in a bare or newly established tank. Without a mature biofilm layer on rocks and substrate, there is simply nothing for it to eat. A mature tank with algae-crusted rocks, slate tiles or smooth river pebbles provides the core diet; this can be supplemented with algae wafers placed on the substrate, blanched courgette or cucumber, and small frozen foods such as daphnia or artemia. The species will not consistently take flake food and should not be expected to compete with faster midwater fish at feeding time.
Mating
Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Homalopteroides avii in the wild or in captivity. As with the majority of hillstream loaches, field data on courtship and spawning are limited, and captive spawnings in home aquaria are rarely reported for the genus.
In related hillstream loach genera, males are sometimes distinguishable from females by a more slender body and, in reproductively active fish, by tubercles or slight textural differences on the snout. Whether similar dimorphism occurs in Homalopteroides avii is not documented. The stimulus for reproductive activity in the wild presumably involves the seasonal cues that govern breeding in hill-stream fishes — rising water levels, changes in flow and temperature, and food availability — but data specific to this species are lacking.
Breeding
Homalopteroides avii has not been bred in home aquaria to any documented extent, and there is no published record of aquarium spawning for this species. It shares the general reproductive pattern of hillstream balitorids: eggs are likely scattered among stones and gravel in fast, well-oxygenated water, with no parental care following spawning. A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata from Vietnam — have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river biotope tanks, and it is possible that Homalopteroides could spawn in a well-maintained, mature hillstream setup, but this remains unconfirmed for avii.
The honest assessment is that this species is rarely or never bred in home aquaria, and it does not appear in commercial aquaculture. Hobbyists should purchase it expecting to keep it well rather than reproduce it.
In the aquarium
Homalopteroides avii demands a setup designed specifically for its biology, and fails quickly in general community tanks. The non-negotiables are strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, cool water and biological maturity. Water temperature should be kept in the cool range appropriate for a Bornean hill-stream fish (approximately 64–75 °F / 64–75 °F); the tank should never approach the warm temperatures used for most tropical community fish. Flow should be vigorous — a turnover rate of 10–15 times the tank volume per hour is often cited for hillstream loaches as a group — and the filtration and surface agitation must keep dissolved oxygen high.
The substrate and decor should replicate the species' natural rock-slab habitat: smooth river stones, slate, rounded pebbles and clean gravel, with minimal fine substrate. Critically, the rocks must be colonised by algae and biofilm before the fish is added; adding a hillstream loach to a new or spotless tank is effectively adding it to a tank with no food. Regular gentle light, a mature filter and patience in establishing the tank before stocking are prerequisites.
Because the skin is nearly scaleless, Homalopteroides avii is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of many treatments. If disease appears in a tank containing this species, use half-doses of appropriate medications and remove copper-containing products. The fish is small (under 2.5 in) and not aggressive, but it should not be kept with boisterous or large tankmates that will outcompete it for food and territory on the substrate.
Conservation
Homalopteroides avii is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (assessment version 2020.2). FishBase records the IUCN status as Least Concern, and the Rajang River basin populations appear stable with no immediate documented threats at the time of assessment.
The Rajang River is the longest river in Sarawak and drains a large catchment in interior Borneo. While the basin has been subject to logging, plantation expansion and hydroelectric development in parts of its range — pressures that affect much of Sarawak's freshwater fauna — the species' range within the system and its habitat requirements in fast, clear hill-stream sections have not been reported to be in immediate decline. As a rheophilic torrent species it is dependent on the maintenance of water quality and natural flow regimes in the upper Rajang tributaries. It does not appear in significant volumes in the ornamental trade, and there is no evidence that collection pressure is a concern.
