Taxonomy & naming
Kayahschistura lokalayensis was described by Maurice Kottelat and Adam Grego in 2020 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, based on material collected from a cave in Kayah State, Myanmar. The describers judged the fish anatomically distinct enough from its closest relatives — genera such as Mustura, Pteronemacheilus, Physoschistura, Petruichthys and Rhyacoschistura — to place it in a new, monotypic genus, Kayahschistura, named for the state in which it was found. It is the first cave-dwelling nemacheilid recorded from Myanmar.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, comprising hundreds of small, often narrow-range species spread across streams, springs and caves from the Middle East to East Asia. As a 2020 description with no prior synonymy in the popular literature, Kayahschistura lokalayensis has not been shuffled between genera the way many older Nemacheilus- and Noemacheilus-group species have; the combination used here follows the original description and the Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
The holotype measures about 3 in standard length, making this a fairly large fish by nemacheilid standards. Like other troglobitic and troglophilic loaches, it shows the hallmark suite of cave adaptations: eyes that are reduced or regressed rather than functional, and a body that is pale to whitish, largely lacking the mottled or barred pigment pattern typical of surface-dwelling relatives. A fleshy suborbital flap is present below the eye — a feature used to help distinguish it from related genera, distinct from the erectile suborbital spine that characterizes many other loach lineages.
As in other Nemacheilidae, the body is slender and nearly scaleless, and the caudal fin is forked. Described observers noted the fish as sensitive to movement and disturbance in its cave environment, a common trait among cave fishes that have evolved in the near-total absence of visual predators and instead rely on other senses to detect approach.
Habitat
The species is known only from the type locality: Lokalay Loku Gu cave, also recorded as Myaug a San cave, near Han Li village in Kayah State, eastern Myanmar (roughly 19.39°N, 97.02°E). Within the cave system, specimens were found in deeper cave pools and in the hydrodynamically sheltered, shaded margins of a fast-flowing stream — the still-water pockets out of the main current rather than the open flow itself.
This places Kayahschistura lokalayensis among a small number of genuinely cave-adapted Southeast Asian fishes. Nothing in the available record suggests it occurs outside this cave system; as with most single-locality cave fishes, its actual range may simply be unsurveyed rather than truly this narrow, but no other population has been documented.
Feeding
No specific dietary study has been published for this species. Nemacheilid loaches as a family are bottom-foraging micro-predators, working over gravel, sediment and rock surfaces for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items; cave-dwelling relatives in this group typically continue that benthic, invertebrate-based diet in an environment where food input depends on whatever organic material washes or drips into the cave from outside.
Given the total absence of aquarium history for this species, there is no keeper-reported feeding data to draw on. Any statement beyond the general Nemacheilidae pattern would be speculation, so none is offered here.
Mating
No reproductive biology has been documented for Kayahschistura lokalayensis. The original description is a taxonomic account based on a small series of specimens and does not report on courtship, spawning behaviour or seasonal timing, and no subsequent field or aquarium observations appear to exist.
For context, related surface and cave-associated Nemacheilidae are egg-scattering fish, but nothing specific to this species' mating behaviour can be stated without guessing.
Breeding
There is no record of Kayahschistura lokalayensis being bred, or even kept, in captivity. As a stone and brook loach, the expected reproductive mode by family pattern is an egg-scatterer over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — but this is inferred from its relatives, not observed in this species itself.
Data is sparse to the point of absence: the species is known from a handful of museum specimens from one cave, and nothing about its breeding — timing, fecundity, larval development — has been published. It should be treated as effectively unbred and unbreedable in any documented sense at present.
In the aquarium
Kayahschistura lokalayensis has no history in the aquarium hobby. It is not collected, traded or kept, and there are no husbandry reports to draw on for temperature, water chemistry or tank setup. As a nearly scaleless nemacheilid it would be expected to share the family's general sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, and as a cave-adapted species with regressed eyes and reported sensitivity to disturbance, it would likely need very stable, quiet, low-light conditions with minimal handling — but none of this has actually been tested.
Given its narrow single-cave range and complete absence from trade, there is no reason to expect this species to appear in the hobby, and no basis for recommending specific care parameters beyond what is known of its wild cave habitat: cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated water over gravel and stone.
Conservation
Kayahschistura lokalayensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. It is known only from a single cave system in Kayah State, Myanmar, which by itself is a red flag for vulnerability: any species restricted to one cave is inherently exposed to localized threats such as groundwater pollution, cave disturbance or habitat alteration, even without a formal assessment confirming it.
There is no evidence of any aquarium trade pressure on this species — it has never been reported in commerce. The primary conservation consideration is simply protecting the integrity of its one known cave habitat and the surrounding karst hydrology in Kayah State.
