Koreocobitis naktongensis is a spined loach found nowhere on Earth but the Naktong River system of South Korea, where it grazes over rocky, fast-flowing upper-stream beds. It belongs to the true-loach family Cobitidae and carries that family's signature erectile suborbital spine, along with the elongated, near-scaleless body typical of the group. This is a cool, flow-loving stream fish rather than a warm tropical one, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby — what little is documented about its biology comes from a laboratory spawning study rather than from home tanks. Narrowly endemic and formally listed as Endangered within South Korea, it is a species defined by its single river system.

Taxonomy & naming

Koreocobitis naktongensis was described by Kim, Park & Nalbant in 2000, one of a small number of spined loaches placed in the genus Koreocobitis, which was itself erected to hold Korean endemic cobitids formerly grouped with the wider Eurasian genus Cobitis. The species epithet naktongensis refers directly to its type locality and only known range, the Naktong River (also romanised Nakdong River) of southeastern South Korea.

It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined loaches — the group that gives its name to the erectile suborbital spine shared across the family, and that also includes the widespread Eurasian genus Cobitis, the smaller genus Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus. The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Koreocobitis naktongensis; older regional literature sometimes still treats Korean spined loaches under the broader Cobitis, but the genus Koreocobitis is retained here.

Morphology

Like other members of Cobitidae, Koreocobitis naktongensis has the elongated, laterally compressed body plan of a true loach, with a rounded head, barbels around a small downturned mouth, and the family's diagnostic erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out defensively. FishBase records a maximum size of about 5.5 in standard length, making it a modestly sized stream loach rather than one of the larger botiids.

The body is patterned with dark blotches over a yellowish ground colour, an elongated silhouette suited to threading through rocky current rather than open swimming. The dorsal fin carries three spines and seven soft rays, the anal fin three spines and five soft rays — details recorded in the taxonomic and ichthyofaunal literature rather than aquarium observation. As in other Cobitidae the scales are tiny and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally naked and sensitive, a point that matters for any handling or treatment.

Habitat

Koreocobitis naktongensis is endemic to the Naktong River basin of South Korea, where it lives over rocky bottoms in fast-flowing upper-stream reaches. FishBase describes the environment as subtropical, freshwater and demersal — a benthic fish tied to the river bed rather than the water column, in flowing water over stone and gravel rather than still, silty margins.

This is a cool, current-loving stream species, not a warm-water tropical fish: its documented habitat is fast, well-oxygenated upper-stream water over a rocky substrate, closer in character to the temperate and hillstream ends of the loach spectrum than to the warm lowland rivers that clown loaches or kuhli loaches inhabit. Its entire known range is confined to the Naktong system, giving it a narrow geographic footprint typical of many stream-endemic Korean fishes.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to Koreocobitis naktongensis appears in the cached sources, but its body plan and habitat point clearly to the same benthic strategy shared across Cobitidae: a sand- and gravel-sifting omnivore that works the rocky stream bed for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, along with algae and detritus picked from stones in the current.

In a laboratory setting, the spawning study that documented this species' reproduction noted that non-spawning individuals in the holding tank fed on fertilized eggs — evidence that, at minimum, this is an opportunistic feeder willing to take whatever suitable food is available, consistent with the general omnivorous habits of the family.

Mating

The only detailed behavioural account of this species comes from a laboratory spawning trial reported in the Korean Journal of Ichthyology, in which broodstock were induced to spawn with Ovaprim hormone injections in late April 2010. Spawning activity began roughly 11–12 hours after injection and proceeded through three recognisable stages — pre-spawning, spawning and post-spawning behaviour — with courtship built around the male clasping the female's dorsal fin using a specialised structure called the lamina circularis, a mating grip documented in several Cobitidae.

In the wild the species is understood to spawn in spring and early summer, with the study's induced spawning falling in late April and natural spawning reported as a May–June event, consistent with the seasonal spring spawning pattern typical of temperate spined loaches responding to rising water temperatures.

Breeding

Koreocobitis naktongensis is an egg-scattering species with no parental care — consistent with the wider pattern in Cobitidae, where several temperate members such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus have been pond- or tank-spawned, in contrast to the tropical Cobitidae, which generally have not. The one documented spawning of this species was achieved in a research laboratory, not a hobby aquarium, using hormone induction (Ovaprim) to bring broodstock into condition during the spring spawning window.

The study found no parental care after spawning, and noted that unfed adults in the same tank would consume the fertilized eggs — a reminder that eggs must be separated from adults if any rearing is attempted. There is no record in the cached sources of this species being bred in a home aquarium; what is known comes entirely from that single scientific spawning trial, and the species should be considered essentially unavailable to, and unbred by, hobbyists.

In the aquarium

Koreocobitis naktongensis is not established in the aquarium trade and the cached sources give no husbandry record for it in captivity. What can be reasonably inferred follows directly from its wild habitat and its shared family traits: this is a cool, current-loving, rocky-bottomed stream fish, and any attempt to keep it would call for strong flow, high dissolved oxygen, a rocky or coarse substrate, and temperatures on the cool-to-moderate side rather than a heated tropical setup — the mismatch that harms hillstream and cool-stream loaches most often kept as if they were warm-water fish.

As in other Cobitidae, the near-scaleless skin and erectile suborbital spine call for gentle handling and caution with medications and copper-based treatments, which this family absorbs readily. Given its endangered status and narrow endemic range, this is not a species to source from the wild trade in any case; there is no evidence of a legitimate, sustainable aquarium supply.

Conservation

FishBase lists Koreocobitis naktongensis as Not Evaluated on the global IUCN Red List, but sources describing Korea's domestic conservation framework indicate the species is designated an Endangered Class I species within South Korea — the country's own strict-protection category — reflecting its very narrow endemic range confined to the Naktong River basin and its dependence on flowing, rocky-bottomed stream habitat.

A species restricted to a single river system anywhere is inherently vulnerable to local pressures — damming, channelisation, water abstraction and pollution can all degrade or fragment the flowing habitat this loach depends on — and its formal endangered status in its home country underscores that vulnerability even though no international IUCN assessment has yet been published. It is fair to treat this as a conservation-priority species rather than a common one, and it has no established role in the aquarium trade.
