Lepturichthys dolichopterus is a small hillstream loach of the family Balitoridae endemic to the Minjiang River of Fujian Province in southeastern China. Described by D. Y. Dai in 1985, it is distinguished from its congener Lepturichthys fimbriatus by longer, more elaborate pectoral and ventral fins — the feature encoded in its species name. Like all hillstream loaches it is a creature of cold, fast, oxygen-saturated torrents, pressing itself flat against current-swept rock where it grazes biofilm. It is rarely encountered in the aquarium trade and remains data-sparse in both the conservation and hobbyist literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Lepturichthys dolichopterus was described by the Chinese ichthyologist D. Y. Dai in 1985. The genus Lepturichthys belongs to the family Balitoridae — the hillstream and river loaches of Asia — within the order Cypriniformes. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) lists L. dolichopterus as a valid species; the genus currently contains two species, L. dolichopterus and L. fimbriatus, both endemic to China.

Phylogenetic work by Tang (2012, Zoologica Scripta) placed L. dolichopterus in a distinct lineage within Balitoridae, with all sampled individuals originating from the Minjiang River system — consistent with a narrow endemic. The genus is sometimes grouped with Gastromyzontinae (the torrent loaches) but its exact placement within the Balitoridae has varied as molecular studies have rearranged the family. Morphology

Lepturichthys dolichopterus is a flattened, disc-like hillstream loach adapted for life in powerful current. The body is depressed — broad and low — with an enlarged, horizontally spread pectoral girdle and pelvic fins that together form a ventral suction surface, allowing the fish to cling to bare rock in fast flow without being swept away. The defining character that separates it from L. fimbriatus is its proportionally longer pectoral and ventral fins, a feature directly named in the species epithet.

The skin is essentially scaleless to the touch, with deeply embedded, rudimentary scales — a feature shared across hillstream loaches that makes the fish acutely sensitive to medications and water-quality fluctuation. Precise adult size data for this species are sparse; like most Balitoridae, it is a small fish, likely in the range of 2–3 in total length based on family norms, but measured data are not available in the accessible literature.

Habitat

Lepturichthys dolichopterus is known from the Minjiang River in Fujian Province, southeastern China — a single river system, making it a narrow endemic. The Minjiang drains the Wuyi Mountains and runs to the Taiwan Strait; its upper and middle reaches flow fast over rock and gravel, and it is in this type of torrent habitat — cold, clear, swift-moving water highly saturated with dissolved oxygen — that hillstream loaches of this type are found.

The species is a rheophilic specialist: it occupies the current-swept faces of boulders and rock slabs where benthic algae and biofilm develop. It is a cool-water fish. Temperatures in the fast-flowing reaches of the Minjiang are considerably lower than those of tropical Asia, and the fish's dependence on very high oxygen levels means it cannot tolerate the warm, still conditions of a typical community aquarium. Suitable water is cool (roughly 64–75 °F), well-aerated, and constantly moving.

Feeding

Lepturichthys dolichopterus is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps biofilm, microalgae, diatoms and associated microfauna from the surface of rocks using a specialised oral disc. In its native torrent habitat, current-swept boulders develop a continuous, nutritious carpet of algae and biofilm that the fish harvests continuously, moving across the rock surface.

In an aquarium context this means the fish requires a mature, well-established tank whose rock surfaces carry a visible growth of algae and diatoms. In a bare, newly set-up tank, or one kept too clean, L. dolichopterus will starve regardless of what other food is offered — this is the single commonest cause of death in hillstream loaches. Supplementary feeding with algae wafers, blanched greens (spinach, courgette), and small frozen foods such as daphnia or cyclops can help, but the biofilm base is irreplaceable.

Mating

Almost nothing is documented about the reproductive behaviour of Lepturichthys dolichopterus in the wild or in captivity. By analogy with the broader hillstream loach group (Balitoridae), the sexes are likely similar in external appearance, with ripe females becoming noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid. As with most hillstream loaches, reliable sexing is not straightforward outside of breeding condition.

In the few hillstream genera for which wild spawning data exist, mating involves the male positioning himself alongside or over the female on a rock surface, fertilising eggs as she deposits them. Whether L. dolichopterus follows this pattern is not documented. The species' narrow endemic range and apparent rarity in the trade mean that little dedicated observation has been reported.

Breeding

Lepturichthys dolichopterus has not been bred in the home aquarium to any documented degree. The species is effectively absent from the mainstream trade, and no spawn accounts appear in the hobbyist or scientific literature. As an egg-scatterer with no parental care, it presumably deposits adhesive eggs among stones in fast-flowing water, as observed in related hillstream genera, but this remains unconfirmed for this species.

A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river aquaria, with eggs buried among gravel or lodged against stones and no subsequent parental attention. Whether L. dolichopterus would respond similarly is unknown. Keepers should approach this species as one unlikely to breed under normal hobbyist conditions, and the honest assessment is that it is not bred in home aquaria.

In the aquarium

Lepturichthys dolichopterus is an uncommon species in the trade — essentially a specialist's fish — and its care requirements are demanding enough that it is not recommended for beginners. The non-negotiable minimum is a strong, well-established current: a turnover of at least 10 times the tank volume per hour from a powerhead or wavemaker directed across rock surfaces, combined with mature biofilm growth on those surfaces. The tank must be mature — weeks or months old — before the fish is introduced, so that a real biofilm base exists. Temperature should be kept cool, in the range of 64–75 °F; a heater set to maintain tropical temperatures is actively harmful.

As a near-scaleless fish, L. dolichopterus is sensitive to copper-based medications and should receive half-dose treatments or copper-free alternatives. It is, like most hillstream loaches, prone to ich and fungal infections when water quality lapses — the high-oxygen, cool, fast-water requirement means that oxygen depletion or temperature spikes are quickly punishing. A tight-fitting lid is important: hillstream loaches can climb glass and will exit an open tank. Group size for this species is not well documented, but keeping several individuals together, rather than singly, is advisable given the social tendencies observed across the hillstream loach family.

Conservation

Lepturichthys dolichopterus has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category. As a narrow endemic known only from the Minjiang River system in Fujian Province, southeastern China, it has the profile of a potentially vulnerable species: small range, specialised habitat, and apparent rarity. Small-range Asian hillstream loaches are frequently data-deficient or entirely unevaluated in global conservation assessments, a pattern that reflects the scale of the task rather than the species' actual security.

The Minjiang catchment faces pressures common across southeastern China's river systems, including hydroelectric development, agricultural run-off, sedimentation and water abstraction. Torrent-dwelling fish that require cold, clear, swift-flowing water over clean rock are particularly sensitive to any factor that warms, slows or silts up the stream. The species appears to be absent or very rare in the aquarium trade, so collecting pressure is unlikely to be a significant threat at present, but the combination of tiny range and habitat vulnerability warrants monitoring.
