Taxonomy & naming
Malihkaia aligera was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2017 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, in a paper that erected the new genus Malihkaia to hold three new nemacheilid loaches from the northern Irrawaddy drainage of Myanmar. Malihkaia aligera is the type species. The type series was collected from the Mali Hka River near Putao, and the genus name honours that river directly.
The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with well over 700 described species spread across Eurasia, most of them small, cryptic and confined to a single river system or headwater stream. Kottelat separated Malihkaia from the sprawling old genera Nemacheilus and Schistura on the basis of a distinctive lip structure and, most strikingly, the male pectoral-fin dimorphism described below. As with much of Nemacheilidae, the genus is recent and the group remains under active taxonomic revision; the Catalog of Fishes is the reference for the current valid combination, and Malihkaia aligera has not been placed in synonymy with any other name.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, with FishBase reporting a maximum standard length of about 3 in. It has the classic nemacheilid build: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a pointed head, and thick lips marked by furrows, an adaptation for grazing and picking food from stone and gravel surfaces. Dorsal fin with 12 soft rays and anal fin with 8 are recorded in the original description.
The species' defining feature is sexual dimorphism in the pectoral fins: mature males develop pectoral fins that are strongly falcate — sickle- or wing-shaped, considerably longer and more pointed than the female's — which is the source of the epithet aligera, "winged." This kind of male fin ornamentation is unusual within Nemacheilidae and was cited by Kottelat as one of the diagnostic features separating Malihkaia from related genera. Like other stone loaches it is a scaleless-skinned or near-scaleless fish, which matters for how it should be handled and treated in captivity; the original description does not report an erectile suborbital spine for this genus, and none should be assumed.
Habitat
Malihkaia aligera is known only from the Mali Hka River near Putao, in Kachin State in the far north of Myanmar — part of the upper Irrawaddy drainage, close to the eastern edge of the Himalayan foothills. FishBase describes its habitat as fast riffles over gravel and cobble substrate, at a modest depth of around 23.5 in.
This is a fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated headwater stream environment typical of stone loach habitat: cool-to-moderate temperature water tumbling over a stony bed, with little standing vegetation and a substrate that is scoured and refreshed with each rainy season. As with the great majority of small-range Nemacheilidae, the species is known from a single river system and its broader distribution, if any, is undocumented.
Feeding
FishBase records the diet simply as insects, consistent with the fish's role as a benthic micro-predator picking invertebrates from the riffle bed. Stone loaches of this kind forage over gravel and cobble for aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates dislodged by the current, using their furrowed lips to probe crevices between stones.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species specifically, but its wild diet and habitat point clearly to a fish that would need small live or frozen foods and sinking preparations offered at the bottom, rather than flake taken from the surface — the general pattern for micro-predatory stone and brook loaches.
Mating
Nothing has been published on the courtship or spawning behaviour of Malihkaia aligera; it has never been observed breeding in the wild or in captivity, and the original description is a taxonomic paper rather than a natural-history account. The one relevant clue is the pronounced pectoral-fin dimorphism in males, which strongly suggests some form of visual or physical role in courtship or mate assessment, as is presumed for similar ornamented fins in other fish groups — but this is an inference, not an observed fact, and should be treated as speculative.
As with most stone and brook loaches, any spawning would be expected to follow the family pattern: no elaborate pairing display, no nest, and no sustained parental investment, timed to the rains and rising, oxygen-rich flow of its home river.
Breeding
There is no record of Malihkaia aligera being bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby. Data is sparse to the point of nonexistent beyond the original taxonomic description. Based on the well-documented pattern across Nemacheilidae, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: eggs released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry.
Stone and brook loaches as a group are rarely bred in home aquaria, and a species known from a single Myanmar headwater stream and absent from the trade is not an exception to that rule. Nothing here should be read as an invitation to guess at a cave-spawning or mouthbrooding strategy — no nemacheilid loach breeds that way.
In the aquarium
Malihkaia aligera is not established in the aquarium trade, and there are no husbandry records to draw on. Any care recommendation has to be extrapolated cautiously from its wild habitat and its family's general requirements rather than stated as fact.
A fish built for fast, cool-to-moderate, heavily oxygenated riffle water over gravel and cobble would need strong current, high dissolved oxygen, a stony substrate, and stable, clean water rather than a warm, still community tank. Like other scaleless loaches, stone loaches are typically sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any future keeper should plan on gentle, reduced-dose dosing and close observation. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry history, this species is presently a scientific curiosity rather than an aquarium fish, and any acquisition would necessarily be from wild collection in a very restricted range.
Conservation
Malihkaia aligera has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated; no status or year should be inferred beyond that. It is known only from its type locality on the Mali Hka River near Putao, Myanmar, which — as with many single-river nemacheilid endemics — makes any future assessment of its status highly dependent on further fieldwork.
No population trend, threat data, or trade pressure has been documented for this species. Its narrow known range in a remote part of northern Myanmar means it is not currently part of the ornamental trade, and the main conservation-relevant fact is simply how little is known: a genuinely data-sparse, recently described stream endemic.
