Taxonomy & naming
Niwaella xinjiangensis was described by Chen & Chen in 2005 in the paper "Revision of the genus Niwaella in China (Pisces, Cobitidae), with description of two new species," published in the Journal of Natural History. The type specimens were collected from the Xinjiang River in Guangfeng County, Jiangxi Province, China, in May 1990. The species name refers to this type locality, the Xinjiang River — an unrelated place name to the vast Xinjiang autonomous region in China's far northwest, a coincidence of romanisation that is worth flagging so the two are not confused.
The genus Niwaella sits within Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, a family that has been repeatedly revised as Cobitoidea taxonomy has matured — many of its relatives have moved between Cobitis, Niwaella, Kichulchoia and other genera over the decades. The 2005 revision that named this species was itself part of that ongoing sorting-out of the Chinese Niwaella. Data on this species beyond the original description and its listing in taxonomic and database references remain sparse.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Niwaella xinjiangensis carries the family's diagnostic erectile suborbital spine, a hinged spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out — a defensive structure shared across the true spined loaches. The original description distinguishes it from its Niwaella relatives by 17 to 20 dark brown vertical bars along the dorsolateral surface, a dark lateral stripe or row of black spots along the flank, comparatively shorter barbels, and a longer caudal peduncle.
Like other Cobitidae it is a slender, elongated, sand-adapted body form with a near-scaleless skin — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than absent, but the practical effect for care is the same sensitivity issue seen across the family. Maximum size has not been documented in the sources available for this species; that figure should be treated as data sparse rather than guessed at.
Habitat
The species is known from the Xinjiang River system in Guangfeng County, Jiangxi Province, in southeastern China — a warm-temperate to subtropical part of the Yangtze drainage basin. FishBase records it as a tropical, benthopelagic freshwater fish, consistent with the broader pattern for Chinese Niwaella, which tend toward subtropical and tropical distributions rather than the cold, high-latitude streams favoured by some of their Cobitidae relatives further north and west in Eurasia.
As a bottom-dwelling loach it is presumed, in line with its family and genus, to favour flowing stream habitat with a soft, sandy or fine-gravel substrate it can bury into and sift for food, though detailed habitat description beyond the type locality has not been captured in the sources reviewed here.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study is available for Niwaella xinjiangensis, but its family habits are well established: Cobitidae are sand-sifting benthic omnivores, working through the substrate for small invertebrates such as worm and insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and molluscs, along with organic detritus. A soft, diggable substrate is central to how these fish feed in the wild, letting them bury partway in and work grains through their gills as they extract food.
In the absence of direct observation for this species, the safest statement is that it should be expected to follow this same sand-sifting omnivorous pattern typical of its genus and family, rather than assuming any more specialised diet.

Niwaella xinjiangensis falls into that second category: there is no record of it being spawned in an aquarium or research setting. Its likely mode, by family pattern, is egg-scattering with no parental care, but this should be read as an inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact for the species itself.
In the aquarium
Niwaella xinjiangensis has no meaningful presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not a traded species, and the sources reviewed contain no aquarium-keeping accounts, husbandry notes, or trade history for it. Any care regime would have to be extrapolated from its family: Cobitidae are near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so a cautious, reduced-dose approach to any medication would be prudent if the species were ever kept. A soft sand substrate for natural sifting behaviour, and warm, well-oxygenated water consistent with its subtropical Jiangxi origin, would follow from the same reasoning.
Given how little is documented, this section is necessarily thin, and that thinness is itself informative: this is a poorly known, non-commercial stream loach rather than a hobby fish, and any aquarist encountering it would be working essentially without a husbandry precedent.
