Paralepidocephalus guishanensis was described by Li in 2004, in the Journal of Jishou University, as one of three new Cobitidae species the author erected from Yunnan Province in that paper. It sits in the genus Paralepidocephalus, a small group considered closely allied to Lepidocephalichthys (formerly written Lepidocephalus) but distinguished by a scaleless head and body — a point of anatomy reflected directly in the genus name.
The species belongs to family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, alongside genera such as Cobitis, Sabanejewia, Misgurnus, Acantopsis and Lepidocephalichthys. As with much of this family's Southeast and East Asian membership, the group has seen repeated taxonomic revision in recent decades; Paralepidocephalus guishanensis has not been folded into a renamed combination, and the Catalog of Fishes continues to list it under its original genus and epithet, guishanensis, which references the Guishan type locality in Yunnan.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Paralepidocephalus guishanensis carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine housed in a groove beneath the eye, which the fish can flick out defensively. Its skin is described as scaleless on the head and body — an unusual degree of nakedness even among loaches, and the character that separates the genus Paralepidocephalus from its close relative Lepidocephalichthys.
Beyond that generic-level anatomy, no published size, coloration or fin-count data for this species has surfaced in standard aquarium or ichthyological references. FishBase carries an entry for the species (ID 64018) but without size or morphometric detail beyond the original description. Anyone encountering the fish should expect it to share the general slender, sand-loach body plan typical of the genus rather than assume a specific published maximum length.
Habitat
Paralepidocephalus guishanensis is endemic to Yunnan Province in southern China, with a type locality in the Guishan area that gives the species its name. Yunnan sits in the warm, hilly headwater country of several major Southeast Asian river systems, and its native loach fauna is typically found in flowing streams and rivers over sandy or fine substrates, where sand-sifting Cobitidae species forage and bury themselves.
Unlike the temperate spined loaches of Europe and the Caucasus — Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the European weather loach Misgurnus fossilis — Yunnan's Cobitidae fauna is generally tropical to subtropical rather than coldwater, consistent with the region's climate. No published account of this particular species' stream conditions, flow, or seasonal variation has been found; its habitat should be inferred cautiously from its Yunnan range and family placement rather than from any species-specific field study.
Feeding
No diet study exists for Paralepidocephalus guishanensis specifically. Cobitidae as a family are characteristically sand-sifting benthic omnivores, taking worm, insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and detritus sifted from a soft streambed, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from that general pattern.
In the absence of direct data, the honest statement is that its natural diet is undocumented and inferred only from its family membership. For this species specifically, the correct and honest line is that it is not known to have been bred in the aquarium at all — it does not appear in the ornamental trade, and its reproduction has not been studied even in the wild beyond what can be inferred from its family.

Paralepidocephalus guishanensis is not a hobby fish. Anyone who somehow acquired specimens would be working from first principles drawn from the wider Cobitidae family rather than any species-specific guidance.
What can be said with confidence, from its family placement, is that it would need the general Cobitidae baseline: a soft, sand-based substrate to sift and burrow in, clean well-oxygenated water, and gentle handling and medication given the scaleless, spine-bearing anatomy typical of true loaches — near-scaleless skin makes this family group sensitive to copper and full-strength medications. Beyond those generic cautions, there is no basis for more specific stocking, tankmate, or sizing advice for this species.
Conservation
Paralepidocephalus guishanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a narrow-range Yunnan endemic known only from its type locality area, it fits the pattern of many small-range Chinese stream loaches that have never been the subject of a dedicated conservation assessment.
