Paranemachilus pingguoensis is a small, blind-adapted cave loach known only from underground rivers in the karst country of Guangxi, southern China. It is the second species ever placed in the genus Paranemachilus, which spent roughly three decades as a monotypic curiosity before this fish and two further relatives were described from the same limestone region. Data on it are genuinely sparse — no aquarium keeper has documented it, and what is known comes almost entirely from taxonomic and phylogenetic literature rather than from field ecology or the hobby. That scarcity is itself part of the honest picture: this is a narrow-range cave specialist, not an aquarium fish, and its IUCN Vulnerable listing reflects how little room it has to lose.

Taxonomy & naming

Paranemachilus pingguoensis was described by Gan in 2013, becoming only the second recognized species in the genus Paranemachilus — a genus that had been monotypic (containing just its type species) for close to three decades before this description. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled by taxonomists as new molecular and morphological evidence has come in.

The species epithet pingguoensis refers to Pingguo, the district in Guangxi, southern China, where the fish was found. Subsequent work has expanded the genus further: in 2024, two additional congeners, Paranemachilus luegvetensis and Paranemachilus liui, were described from Wuming District in nearby Nanning City, also in Guangxi, confirming that Paranemachilus is a small radiation of cave-adapted loaches endemic to this karst region of China rather than a single relict species. Molecular phylogenetic work on Paranemachilus mitochondrial genomes has supported the genus as valid and distinct within Nemacheilidae.

Morphology

Paranemachilus pingguoensis is a small loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3.5 in standard length. Like other members of its family it has the elongated, cylindrical body typical of stone and brook loaches, built for moving through tight spaces in flowing water rather than open swimming.

A key diagnostic feature separating this species from its relatives is the lack of scaled cheeks — earlier taxonomic work on the genus placed diagnostic weight on cheek scalation, and P. pingguoensis was distinguished in part by not having it. As a cave-dwelling species, it likely shows the reduced pigmentation and reduced or vestigial eye development typical of many obligate cave fishes, though detailed published descriptions of its coloration and eye condition beyond the original taxonomic paper are not available in the sources consulted here. Data on fine morphological detail beyond the formal species description remain sparse.

Habitat

This species is known only from underground river systems in the karst landscape of Guangxi, China, in the vicinity of roughly 24°N–23°N, 107°E–108°E — placing it in the Pingguo area and the broader limestone cave belt of the region. It is a true cave-inhabitant (troglobitic or troglophilic), living in the dark, cool, flowing water of subterranean streams that thread through the region's extensive karst geology.

This narrow, subterranean distribution is the central fact of the species' existence: it is not a fish of open rivers or streams but one restricted to a specific underground hydrological system, sharing that habitat with the newly described P. luegvetensis and P. liui from nearby cave systems in the same karst belt. Because access to these habitats is difficult and the fish itself poorly studied, detailed data on flow rate, substrate and water chemistry within its home caves are not documented in available sources.

Feeding

No species-specific dietary data for Paranemachilus pingguoensis were found in available sources. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches in general are bottom-foraging micro-predators, taking small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans from the substrate of cool, flowing water; cave-dwelling nemacheilids typically rely on whatever organic material and small invertebrate life washes into or persists within the underground system, since photosynthetic food sources are absent in total darkness.

Given the total lack of published aquarium or field-feeding observations for this species, any specific claim about its diet in the wild would be guesswork. What can be said with confidence is that, as with its family generally, it is very unlikely to be a fish that grazes algae or takes flake food readily — the family's feeding style is that of an active, small-prey hunter along the stream bed.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour specific to Paranemachilus pingguoensis is available in the sources consulted. Cave-restricted nemacheilid species in general are understood to breed within their secluded underground habitat, with reproduction in some cave and stream-dwelling nemacheilids cued to seasonal changes such as wet-season flow increases, but this has not been documented for this species specifically.

Cave-dwelling nemacheilid relatives are believed to spawn within their enclosed underground habitat rather than migrating to different waters, but no direct observation of this species' spawning has been published.

This is a fish that should be understood honestly as unbred and essentially unknown in husbandry terms: a narrow-range cave endemic collected for taxonomic study rather than for the aquarium trade, with no farm production and no hobbyist track record to draw on.

In the aquarium

Paranemachilus pingguoensis is not an aquarium fish. It does not appear to be present in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry data, care reports or aquarium photographs are documented in the sources available for this profile. As a cave-adapted species living in constant darkness and likely stable, cool, flowing water, it would in any case be a poor candidate for typical aquarium conditions without highly specialized, low-light, high-flow setups mimicking a subterranean stream — a set of requirements far outside standard fishkeeping practice.

More broadly, stone and brook loaches as a family tend to be scaleless or near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, a point worth keeping in mind for any nemacheilid loach that does enter captivity, even though it has not been specifically documented for this species. For P. pingguoensis, the honest position is that reliable care information simply does not exist yet.

Conservation

Paranemachilus pingguoensis is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable (VU), based on an assessment current as of May 15, 2024, under criterion B1ab(iii) — reflecting a small, restricted geographic range together with an inferred continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. This tracks the species' extremely narrow known distribution: a single karst underground-river system in the Pingguo area of Guangxi, China.

Cave-dwelling fishes of this kind are especially vulnerable to habitat disturbance because their entire known range may be a single cave system or a small cluster of connected ones — activities such as groundwater extraction, pollution of karst aquifers, quarrying and cave tourism development can degrade or destroy habitat that the species has nowhere else to retreat to. With two further congeners (P. luegvetensis and P. liui) newly described from nearby Guangxi cave systems in 2024, the genus as a whole illustrates a small, recently discovered radiation of range-restricted cave specialists likely to share similar conservation concerns, though each requires its own assessment.
