Taxonomy & naming
Paraschistura kermanensis was formally described in 2019 by Golnaz Sayyadzadeh, Azad Teimori and Hamid Reza Esmaeili in the journal Zootaxa, based on a holotype of 2.5 in standard length and a series of paratypes measuring 1.5–2 in SL collected from the Bidkhoon River. The species epithet kermanensis refers to Kerman province in southeastern Iran, the region of its only known locality.
The genus Paraschistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches, and is closely allied to the much larger genus Schistura; older regional literature on Iranian loaches often used the broader names Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus before the group was split along modern lines. The authors separated P. kermanensis from its nearest relative, P. abdolii, using a set of diagnostic scale characters together with six fixed nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial COI barcode and roughly 4% genetic (K2P) distance between the two — a molecular confirmation layered on top of traditional morphology. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination Paraschistura kermanensis.
Morphology
As a nemacheilid, Paraschistura kermanensis has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to hugging the streambed, and a small, downturned mouth ringed with barbels for probing between stones. Like other members of this family it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small defensive spine in a groove beneath the eye — and its skin is effectively scaleless to the touch, a trait that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
Adults reach a modest size, with the type series ranging from about 1.5–2.5 in standard length, the largest specimen (the holotype) at 2.5 in. Diagnosis of the species rests on fine details of scale coverage and pigmentation pattern set against its sister species P. abdolii, rather than any single dramatic external feature — typical of the many recently split, closely similar species within Schistura and its allied genera across the region.
Habitat
The only known population lives in the Bidkhoon River at Hanjam village, Kerman province, part of the Kerman-Naein basin — an endorheic system, meaning its rivers drain into interior salt flats and closed basins rather than reaching the sea. This is characteristic terrain for Iran's highly endemic loach fauna: isolated, spring-fed or seasonally-fed streams cut off from neighbouring drainages, which over time produce narrow-range endemics found nowhere else.
No detailed habitat survey accompanies the description beyond the type locality, but the pattern across Nemacheilidae generally, and Iranian endorheic-basin loaches specifically, is a clear, cool-to-temperate, well-oxygenated stream running over gravel, pebbles and rock, with a steady current the fish uses to hold position and forage. Iran's endorheic basin streams tend to run comparatively stable and cool through the year, consistent with the family's general preference for flowing, oxygen-rich water rather than warm, still conditions.
Feeding
Paraschistura kermanensis has not been the subject of a dedicated diet study, but its biology follows the well-documented pattern for the genus and family: a benthic micro-predator that works the streambed for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — rather than grazing algae or browsing plants.
Where related Paraschistura and Schistura species have been kept, they take small live and frozen foods readily, such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and chironomid (bloodworm) larvae, and are often indifferent to dry flake. There is no reason to expect P. kermanensis to differ from this general micro-predator pattern, though no direct observation of the species' own diet, wild or captive, has been published.
Mating
No spawning behaviour, courtship, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for Paraschistura kermanensis; the description is based on preserved type specimens, not observations of live behaviour. Nothing in the source literature indicates any external difference between males and females.
For the genus and family more broadly, reproduction in Nemacheilidae is understood to follow the typical stone-loach pattern: fish scatter eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water with no courtship display beyond simple approach and release, and no nest or pair bond forms. There is no evidence to suggest this species departs from that pattern, but in the absence of direct observation this remains an inference from its relatives rather than a documented fact about P. kermanensis itself.
Breeding
Consistent with Nemacheilidae as a whole, Paraschistura kermanensis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer: eggs are released over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. This is inferred from the family pattern rather than observed directly in this species, and it has never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby.
Data on this species' reproduction is simply sparse — it is known from a single 2019 taxonomic description of preserved specimens from one stream, and no aquarium or field breeding record exists. As with most narrow-range Nemacheilidae, the honest statement is that breeding biology in the wild and in captivity is essentially unstudied for this particular species.
In the aquarium
Paraschistura kermanensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and there are no keeper reports to draw on. Based on the general requirements of small Nemacheilidae stone loaches, any attempt to keep this species — or its close relatives — would call for cool, clear, well-oxygenated water with a strong current, a substrate of gravel, pebbles and smooth stones, and a settled biofilm surface for the fish to forage over, rather than a warm, still community tank.
As with other true loaches, the near-scaleless skin and suborbital spine are worth bearing in mind: scaleless fish are typically sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, so any future keeper should default to gentler, reduced-dose approaches and careful handling (a container rather than a net, given the erectile spine). Given how little is documented about this species specifically, and its status as a single-locality endemic, it should not be sourced from the wild for the hobby; this profile focuses on what is known rather than encouraging speculative husbandry.
Conservation
Paraschistura kermanensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated (NE) rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2019, it joins a long list of narrow-range Iranian stream endemics that have not yet gone through formal Red List assessment.
It is known only from the Bidkhoon River at Hanjam village within the endorheic Kerman-Naein basin, and appears to be endemic to that single drainage. Species restricted to one small stream in an endorheic basin are inherently vulnerable to local pressures — water abstraction, drought, and habitat alteration — that would not threaten a widespread species, even though no population trend or direct threat data has been published for this species. Its conservation status should be treated as genuinely unknown pending a formal assessment.
