Taxonomy & naming
Paraschistura makranensis was formally described in 2019 by Soheil Eagderi, Hamed Mousavi-Sabet and Jörg Freyhof, part of a wave of recent taxonomic work that has carved a great many new Schistura- and Paraschistura-type stone loaches out of Iran's isolated mountain drainages. The genus Paraschistura sits within the subfamily Nemacheilinae, family Nemacheilidae — the true or stone loaches, by far the largest loach family and one whose genus-level boundaries (Schistura, Triplophysa, Oxynoemacheilus, Paracobitis, Paraschistura and others) have been repeatedly revised as ichthyologists work through Eurasia's freshwater fish diversity.
The species epithet makranensis refers directly to its type locality, the Makran — the coastal mountain and desert region of southeastern Iran and southwestern Pakistan (historically part of Baluchistan) that drains south toward the Gulf of Oman and Persian Gulf. As with many recently split Nemacheilidae, older literature and databases may still lump populations like this one under a broader, now-outdated Schistura or Noemacheilus name; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current, valid combination, which this profile follows: Paraschistura makranensis.
Morphology
Paraschistura makranensis is a small, slender stone loach, reported at roughly 1.5–2 in standard length — a size typical of the genus and of Nemacheilidae generally. Detailed pattern and fin-ray counts distinguishing P. makranensis from its close Iranian relatives are part of the original 2019 description; beyond its small size and stream-loach body plan, the cached sources available for this profile do not give further specifics, and rather than guess at colouration or precise proportions, this account keeps to what is documented: a small, elongate benthic loach endemic to the Makran drainages.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Makran region of Iran, living in clear, cool, fast-flowing mountain tributaries that feed toward the Persian Gulf basin. It occupies the kind of habitat typical for Nemacheilidae across Eurasia: rocky or gravel-bottomed streams with strong current and high dissolved oxygen, where it hugs the substrate out of the main flow.
Reported preferred water temperatures sit in a cool 54–64 °F range, consistent with a highland or upland stream specialist rather than a warm lowland fish. As an endemic of a restricted mountain drainage system, its range is naturally narrow, and like many single-catchment stone loaches its broader distribution and any seasonal habitat shifts remain poorly documented.
Feeding
Paraschistura makranensis is a benthic micro-predator and insectivore, in keeping with its family. It forages over the streambed for small invertebrates, aquatic insect larvae and biofilm, using its barbels to locate prey among gravel and stones in fast-moving water.

Data on this species is sparse across the board: no population studies, no detailed life-history work, and no hobbyist accounts. That gap is itself worth noting honestly rather than papered over with assumptions borrowed wholesale from better-studied relatives.

Given how little is known about this species specifically, anyone encountering it in the trade should treat husbandry as inferred from its genus and habitat, not as an established protocol.
Conservation
Paraschistura makranensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List. This reflects the honest state of knowledge: it is a narrow-range endemic of the Makran region's mountain streams, described only in 2019, with no population estimates, trend data or detailed distribution studies available.
As an endemic restricted to a small set of tributaries in an arid region, it would plausibly be vulnerable to water extraction, drought and habitat degradation affecting its streams, but without dedicated survey work this remains inference rather than documented fact. The species is not part of the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not a relevant conservation factor here; the priority for this fish is basic survey and monitoring work rather than any known active threat.
