Paraschistura montana was described by the Scottish naturalist John McClelland in 1838, one of many small Himalayan stream fishes he named during his surveys of northern India. It has passed through several genus placements typical of this group — the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus catch-all genera that once held most Asian stone loaches have been repeatedly split as researchers worked out the relationships within Nemacheilidae, and the species is currently placed in Paraschistura, a genus of small loaches distributed across South and Central Asia.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the most species-rich family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Readers may encounter the species under older combinations in older literature or database records; the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid name, and this article follows Paraschistura montana (McClelland, 1838).
Morphology
Paraschistura montana is a small, elongate loach reaching a documented maximum of about 5 in total length, modest even by the standards of stone loaches. Like other Nemacheilidae it has a slender, rounded body built for holding position against current, a flattened underside, and small, low-set eyes. Beneath each eye sits the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of loaches in this broader group, and the skin carries the tiny, deeply embedded scales — effectively naked to the touch — that make stone loaches sensitive patients when it comes to medication.
Beyond the measurements captured by FishBase, detailed morphological description of this species is sparse in the accessible literature; as a narrow-range Himalayan endemic it has drawn little targeted study, and much of what would normally fill out colour pattern and fin-ray counts for a species account is simply not documented publicly. Habitat
The species is endemic to Himachal Pradesh in northern India, known from small streams in this Himalayan foothill state. It lives over gravelly bottoms in cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water — the classic stone-loach habitat of clear hill streams rather than warm lowland rivers or still water. FishBase records a temperature range of roughly 64–72 °F and a pH of 6.5–7.5, with moderate water hardness (6–18 dH), consistent with cool, mineral-bearing stream water draining Himalayan terrain.
As a benthic (bottom-dwelling) species it spends its life close to the substrate, sheltering among gravel and stones and using the current rather than avoiding it. This is a coldwater-to-cool-temperate stream fish, not a tropical one, and any attempt to keep it should respect that — warm, still, blackwater-style conditions would be the wrong environment entirely.
Feeding
Paraschistura montana is a micro-predator in the mould of most Nemacheilidae. FishBase places it at trophic level 2.7, consistent with a diet of small benthic invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans picked from among the stream gravel — rather than algae or detritus. It forages along the bottom, almost certainly using barbels around the mouth to locate prey in the way typical of stone loaches, though barbel counts specific to this species are not documented in the sources available.
In captivity, stone loaches of this type generally take small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm, daphnia and similar — and sinking foods that reach the bottom where they forage; they are not reliable surface or flake feeders.

As with other Nemacheilidae, its near-scaleless skin means it would likely be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, warranting caution and reduced dosing if it were ever kept and needed treatment.
