Taxonomy & naming
Sunder Lal Hora described this loach in 1923 as Nemachilus punjabensis, from a stream below the Watta Hills in the Salt Range of Punjab, in what is now Pakistan. Like most of the region's small loaches it has moved genus more than once as the old, oversized Nemachilus/Noemacheilus catch-all was progressively broken apart: for a period it was carried as Schistura punjabensis before current taxonomy placed it in Paraschistura, a genus of some twenty-plus small hillstream loaches. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, Paraschistura punjabensis, and that is the name used here.
It sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species distributed from the Balkans and Anatolia across Central and South Asia to the Russian Far East. Many species in this family, this one included, are known only from their original description and a narrow home range, so the taxonomic history is often better documented than the biology. The name Schistura nalbanti is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
Paraschistura punjabensis has not been the subject of any modern morphological redescription accessible to this profile, and detailed measurements of body proportions, fin ray counts and colour pattern are not established here. What can be said with confidence is that it shares the general nemacheilid body plan: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a small ventral or subterminal mouth suited to picking food from the streambed, and — as in other Nemacheilidae — an erectile suborbital spine used defensively, along with a near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin that leaves it sensitive to poor water quality and to strong medications.
Closely related Paraschistura species give a rough sense of scale: P. kessleri reaches around 2.5 in and P. delvarii about 1.5 in standard length, suggesting P. punjabensis is likely a similarly small fish, well under 4 in. This is an inference from congeners rather than a measured figure for the species itself, and should be read as such.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Salt Range of Punjab, Pakistan, where it was first collected from a stream below the Watta Hills. The Salt Range is a low but rugged range of hills fed by cold, spring- and rain-supplied hillstreams that run over rock and coarse substrate — a very different environment from the warm, slow lowland rivers many aquarists picture when they hear "loach." GBIF records classify it simply as inhabiting these cold hillstream waters of the range.
As with most Nemacheilidae, it is reasonable to expect Paraschistura punjabensis to be adapted to fast, clear, highly oxygenated water flowing over rock and gravel, with morphology and behaviour suited to holding position against current. This is a genuinely narrow-range endemic — known from a small area of one hill range — rather than a widespread river fish, and its habitat should be treated as fragile and easily disrupted by damming, water abstraction or pollution of its home streams.
Feeding
No species-specific feeding study is available for Paraschistura punjabensis, but the genus and family pattern is consistent and can be applied with confidence. Nemacheilid stone loaches are benthic micro-predators, working the substrate of fast, clear streams for small aquatic insect larvae, worms and crustaceans, with zooplankton taken opportunistically where current delivers it.
In an aquarium setting modelled on this genus, that translates to a preference for small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, Daphnia, brine shrimp — over dried flake, which this kind of fish will often ignore or take only reluctantly. A keeper attempting this species should plan on feeding accordingly rather than assuming it will adapt to a standard community diet.
Mating
Specific courtship and spawning behaviour has not been documented for Paraschistura punjabensis. What is recorded is a seasonal pattern: available notes describe spawning activity concentrated in the pre-monsoon and monsoon period, apparently cued by the rise in water flow and temperature that the rains bring to the Salt Range's hillstreams — a pattern broadly consistent with many Himalayan and sub-Himalayan nemacheilids, which time reproduction to seasonal spate conditions rather than spawning year-round.
No external sexual dimorphism has been described for this species in the sources available here, and none should be assumed. Given how little has been published, this remains one of the more open questions about the species.
Breeding
Paraschistura punjabensis is, so far as the available record shows, not established in the aquarium hobby and has no documented history of captive breeding. Consistent with its family, it should be presumed to be an egg-scatterer: nemacheilid loaches typically release eggs over gravel and stones in flowing water with no parental care of eggs or fry, and there is no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour anywhere in this group.
In the wild, spawning appears tied to the pre-monsoon and monsoon rise in flow and temperature described above. Beyond that, there is essentially nothing to report: this is a data-sparse species with no known aquarium spawning record, and any care guide should say so honestly rather than invent detail.
In the aquarium
Paraschistura punjabensis is not a fish available in the aquarium trade, and there is no established husbandry record for it. Anyone attempting to keep it — most likely a specialist working from wild-collected stock — should extrapolate cautiously from its genus and family rather than from generalist loach advice. Nemacheilid stone loaches from cold hillstreams need clear, cool, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a coarse sand, gravel or rock substrate, with strong current and high dissolved oxygen taking priority over the warm, still, densely planted setups suited to many lowland aquarium fish.
As with other loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dose if the fish shows signs of disease. Given the total absence of a trade or husbandry track record, this species is best regarded as one for institutional or specialist conservation-breeding contexts rather than the general hobby.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Paraschistura punjabensis as Vulnerable, reflecting its very small endemic range confined to hillstreams of the Salt Range in Punjab, Pakistan. A species restricted to a handful of small streams in one hill range is inherently exposed: localised habitat degradation, water abstraction, damming or pollution affecting even a single stream system could have an outsized effect on the total population.
There is no evidence of an aquarium trade in this species driving collection pressure — it does not appear to be exported or kept — so its conservation concern rests on habitat rather than harvesting. Protecting the hydrology and water quality of its native Salt Range streams is the relevant conservation lever for this narrow-range endemic.
