Taxonomy & naming
Paraschistura turcmenica was described by the Russian-Soviet ichthyologist Lev Berg in 1932 as Nemacheilus turcmenicus, part of the sprawling old catch-all genus Nemacheilus that once absorbed most of the small Eurasian stone loaches. As with much of that genus, later revision split the group along morphological and molecular lines, and the species now sits in Paraschistura, one of several genera (alongside Schistura, Oxynoemacheilus, Barbatula and Triplophysa) carved from the original Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex. A synonym, Paraschistura turcomana, appears in some literature but refers to the same species; the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, Paraschistura turcmenica (Berg, 1932), and that is the name used here.
The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches, and a group whose taxonomy continues to be actively reworked as molecular studies sample more of its Central Asian and Middle Eastern members. A 2023 molecular systematics study of Paraschistura in the Hari River Basin confirmed modern species delineation within the genus and supports its placement in this Central Asian/Middle Eastern lineage.
Morphology
Paraschistura turcmenica is a small, elongated loach reaching around 2 in in total length. Like other members of its genus it is functionally scaleless — FishBase notes a complete absence of scales, a feature used to distinguish it from the closely related Paraschistura kessleri. The body is slender and rounded in cross-section, typical of a fish that spends its life pressed against streambed gravel and cobble rather than swimming in open water.
As a nemacheilid, it carries the family's small erectile spine near the eye and the barbels typical of bottom-feeding loaches, used to probe substrate for food. Its near-scaleless skin — shared across the family — leaves it more exposed to abrasion, pathogens and medication than a scaled fish, a point that matters more in captivity than in the wild.
Habitat
The type locality is the Kelte-chinar River (also recorded as the Cherokh River) near Gyaurs, Turkmenistan. Beyond the type locality, the species is documented from the Hari River basin and the Murgab River, and from streams draining the northern slope of the Kopetdag range — a mountain chain straddling the Turkmenistan–Iran border. Its known range extends into Afghanistan and Iran, placing it squarely within the Central Asian and Middle Eastern reach of the Nemacheilidae.
FishBase describes it as inhabiting fast-flowing subtropical freshwater streams, and the regional literature notes moderately to fast-flowing fresh water across both mountainous and lowland stretches. This is a clear, oxygen-rich running-water fish, not a still-water or lowland-lake species; it belongs to the cooler, well-aerated streams and rivers of its mountain-fed drainages rather than warm, sluggish or stagnant habitats.
Feeding
Paraschistura turcmenica is a low-level benthic feeder — FishBase records a trophic level of about 2.9, consistent with a small invertebrate-picker rather than a piscivore. Like other stone loaches it almost certainly forages over gravel and stone for aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrates carried or living in fast-flowing water, using its barbels to locate prey by touch and taste in the streambed.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but its close relatives in Nemacheilidae reliably accept small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates — and often show little interest in floating flake, consistent with a fish built to work the bottom of fast water.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behaviour for Paraschistura turcmenica has been documented in the sources available. Reliable external sexual dimorphism has not been recorded either. In the absence of species-specific data, the safest inference comes from the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that do not pair-bond or build nests, releasing eggs into flowing water over gravel with no courtship display beyond general activity increases tied to rising flow and temperature.
Breeding
This is a data-sparse species with no confirmed captive-breeding record. Based on the well-established pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a group, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. Nemacheilids of this kind are rarely bred in home aquaria, and Paraschistura turcmenica specifically has no documented spawning record in captivity — anyone keeping the species should not expect it to reproduce without a strong, sustained current and cool, highly oxygenated water approximating its native streams, and even then success would be unusual.
In the aquarium
Paraschistura turcmenica is essentially undocumented in the hobby — no detailed aquarium care record was found, and it is not a species regularly available in the trade. What can be said with confidence follows from its biology and its close relatives: as a small (about 2 in), scaleless fast-water loach, it would need cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than a warm, still community tank, plus a gravel or stone substrate it can work over for food.
Because it is scaleless like other nemacheilids, it should be treated as sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications — half-doses and gentle treatments are the safer approach if disease treatment is ever needed. Given the total absence of aquarium literature on this species, anyone encountering it in the trade should treat husbandry as an open question and lean on the conditions of fast, cool, clean mountain-stream water as the starting point, rather than generic tropical-community advice.
Conservation
Paraschistura turcmenica has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its range spans parts of Turkmenistan, Afghanistan and Iran — three countries where systematic freshwater-fish monitoring is limited — and no population trend or threat assessment is available in the sources reviewed here.
FishBase characterises the species as having high resilience (a short minimum population-doubling time) and low vulnerability to fishing pressure, which suggests it is not inherently fragile biologically, but this is not a substitute for a formal conservation assessment. Its restriction to specific river basins in mountainous and arid-adjacent terrain means habitat changes — water extraction, damming or pollution of the Hari, Murgab and Kopetdag-draining streams — are the plausible pressures worth watching, though none is documented as an active threat in current sources.
