Taxonomy & naming
Protonemacheilus longipectoralis was described by Yang Jian-Xin and Chu Xin-Luo in 1990 in the journal Zoological Research, in a paper that simultaneously erected the genus Protonemacheilus to hold it — making this species the type species of the genus by monotypy. The description was based on a holotype of 2 in standard length and several paratypes measuring 2–2.5 in SL, collected in October 1983 from Luxi county, Yunnan Province, China.
The species sits in the subfamily Nemacheilinae within family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest and most diverse loach family, whose genus-level taxonomy (Nemacheilus, Noemacheilus, Schistura, Barbatula and their relatives) has been repeatedly revised since the mid-twentieth century. Protonemacheilus has remained a small, distinct genus since its erection, and Protonemacheilus longipectoralis remains its only described member. No taxonomic authority (FishBase, GBIF, Catalog of Fishes) is reported to have synonymized or reclassified it since 1990.
Morphology
The original description characterizes Protonemacheilus longipectoralis as a slightly elongate, laterally compressed loach reaching roughly 2–2.5 in standard length in the type series. The head carries six long barbels — four rostral and two maxillary — around an inferior, bottom-facing mouth, the standard arrangement for a benthic feeder that works the streambed by touch and taste as much as by sight. The anterior and posterior nostrils sit close together, with the anterior nostril raised in a short tube, a detail noted in the original description as diagnostic for the genus.
The body is covered in minute scales except across the head and the thoracic region, which are naked — a near-scaleless condition shared broadly across the Nemacheilidae and one with real consequences for how the fish should be handled and, if it is ever kept, medicated. Beyond the type description, no separate size, growth or longevity data appear to have been published for this species; FishBase itself notes size and life-history data as undocumented.
Habitat
The species is known from Luxi county in Yunnan Province, southern China, at approximately 24°30′N, 98°37′E — a subtropical stream system in the hilly southwestern part of the province. FishBase classifies it as a demersal, subtropical freshwater fish, meaning it lives on or near the bottom rather than in open water, consistent with its inferior mouth and barbel-rich head built for foraging along stream substrate.
No detailed habitat description — flow rate, substrate type, elevation or water chemistry — has been published for the type locality beyond the bare coordinates and county name. Given the genus's placement among the Nemacheilinae and the general pattern for Yunnan stone loaches, it most plausibly inhabits cool-to-mild, clear, flowing stream water, but this is inference from the family rather than a documented fact for this species, and it should be read that way.
Feeding
FishBase reports a trophic level of about 2.8 for Protonemacheilus longipectoralis, placing it as an omnivore that takes a mix of small invertebrates and other bottom material rather than sitting purely as a predator or a grazer. This fits the general pattern for small nemacheiline stone loaches, which typically forage over gravel and stones for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates, supplementing with algae or detritus picked off the substrate.
No species-specific dietary study has been published, so this picture is drawn from the trophic-level estimate and the family's general biology rather than direct observation. Any aquarium account would need to follow that same caution: offer small sinking invertebrate-based foods as the default and treat anything more specific as unverified.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for Protonemacheilus longipectoralis in the literature reviewed here. Sexual dimorphism, breeding season, and any migratory or flow-triggered spawning cues — all commonly described for better-studied Nemacheilidae — remain unreported for this species specifically.
Data sparsity like this is common among the family's narrow-range stream endemics, many of which are known only from their type series and have never been the subject of dedicated field or aquarium observation. Nothing here should be read as evidence against typical nemacheilid reproduction; it simply has not been recorded for this species.
Breeding
As with the rest of the Nemacheilidae, the expected pattern for a stone loach of this kind is an egg-scatterer: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. No aquarium or captive spawning of Protonemacheilus longipectoralis has been documented, and given how rarely this genus and even its wider family surface in the hobby, that is unsurprising.
The honest summary is that this species has essentially no breeding record, in the wild or in captivity, beyond what can be inferred from its relatives. Anyone encountering it in a research or conservation context should treat reproduction as an open question rather than assume the general nemacheilid pattern applies without confirmation.
In the aquarium
Protonemacheilus longipectoralis does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade. A search of hobbyist references, including Loaches.com, turned up no dedicated care profile or record of the species being kept, and it is reasonable to treat it as effectively absent from the hobby — a scientifically described stream endemic rather than an aquarium fish.
If a specimen were ever encountered, the general precautions for small Nemacheilidae would apply: the near-scaleless skin documented in the original description means sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications is likely, and a cool, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing-water setup modeled on a Yunnan hill stream would be the safest starting assumption. None of this has been tested for the species itself, and it should not be presented to a reader as established care advice.
Conservation
Protonemacheilus longipectoralis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — it carries no conservation category, and that absence of an assessment is itself informative for a species known from a single county-level locality in Yunnan. Narrow-range Chinese stream endemics of this kind are frequently vulnerable to damming, water diversion, pollution and agricultural runoff, but without a formal assessment no status can be responsibly assigned here.
Given the species is known only from its original 1983 collection and the resulting 1990 description, its current population status, range extent and any threats it faces are effectively undocumented in the literature reviewed. It stands as a reminder of how many small stream fish across southern China remain assessment-gap species — described, catalogued, and otherwise unstudied.
