Taxonomy & naming
Schistura alticrista was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990, part of his long programme of untangling the sprawling, once catch-all genus Nemacheilus (and its close relative Noemacheilus) into the modern genera used today. Like many of its relatives it would once have been filed under one of those older names in older literature; the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, currently places it in Schistura within the family Nemacheilidae.
The genus Schistura is one of the largest fish genera in the world, with well over 200 described species spread across South and Southeast Asia, and new species continue to be described from isolated headwater streams — this one among them. Its type locality lies in the Nam Mae Yuam river basin, Mae Hong Son Province, in northwestern Thailand near the Myanmar border, and no other population has been documented since.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach only about 3 in in standard length — a genuinely small fish even by the modest standards of Nemacheilidae. Its most distinctive feature, and the one recorded in its scientific name, is a pair of unusually strong, raised vertical crests formed by the adipose fin along both the dorsal and ventral edges of the caudal peduncle, more pronounced than in most of its Schistura relatives.
Like other true loaches it carries a small, erectile spine below the eye — the suborbital spine typical of the Cobitoidea — and its skin is effectively naked, covered only in minute, deeply embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fish. That near-scaleless skin is a recurring theme across the family and matters in the aquarium: these fish absorb dissolved substances, medications included, more readily than scaled species.
Habitat
Schistura alticrista is known only from the Nam Mae Yuam basin, a tributary system of the Salween River, in Mae Hong Son Province in northwestern Thailand near the border with Myanmar. It lives in small streams flowing over pebble substrate — the classic stone-loach habitat of clear, well-oxygenated headwater and tributary water, running over stone, gravel and sand rather than mud or silt.
As with much of the genus, the true extent of its range is poorly documented; it may occur more widely within the basin than the handful of collection records suggest, but no survey has confirmed that. This is cool-to-mild flowing stream water, not the warm, still, blackwater conditions associated with many lowland aquarium fish, and any aquarium approximation should follow that lead rather than default to a generic warm tropical setup.
Feeding
Schistura alticrista is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small aquatic invertebrates — the typical diet for a stone loach living in fast, clear, food-poor headwater streams. It almost certainly takes insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates picked from among the pebbles and gravel, in keeping with the omnivorous-but-invertebrate-leaning diet documented across its close relatives.
In the aquarium, related Schistura species accept a varied diet of small live and frozen foods — bloodworm and Daphnia among them — along with sinking prepared foods, though they often show more interest in the former. A keeper should expect a similarly food-focused, bottom-foraging fish that does best on varied, meaty, sinking fare rather than flake left to drift.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura alticrista; this is a data-sparse species known mainly from its original description and subsequent database listings, not from detailed field or aquarium observation. What can be said comes from the wider pattern seen across Nemacheilidae.
Stone and brook loaches in this family are not known for any elaborate courtship display; spawning follows the general loach pattern of egg-scattering triggered by suitable flow and temperature conditions in fast water, without pairing behaviour or nest-building. There is no record of external sexual dimorphism for this species, and none should be assumed without evidence.
Breeding
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, Schistura alticrista is not known to have been bred in the home aquarium, and no spawning account for the species exists in the literature available. The family as a whole follows an egg-scattering strategy: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no nest, no guarding and no parental care of any kind afterward.
Given how rarely this species even appears in the trade, and how little is documented about its biology beyond the original description, the honest position is that captive breeding is essentially unrecorded. Anyone attempting it would be working from the general Schistura playbook — cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water as the spawning trigger — rather than any specific account for this fish.
In the aquarium
Schistura alticrista is rare in the aquarium trade and turns up only occasionally, so most keepers will never encounter it; when it does appear, it should be treated as the small, cool-flowing-stream specialist that its wild habitat suggests. A tank of at least 90×12 in with a bed of rounded gravel, sand and rocks, driftwood for cover, and strong water movement with high dissolved oxygen approximates the pebble-bottomed headwater streams it comes from.
Because it is small, bottom-dwelling and near-scaleless, it should be kept with calm, similarly-sized tankmates and never crowded by boisterous fish that would out-compete it for the sunken, meaty foods it prefers. Its naked skin makes it, like other loaches, sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — half-doses and gentle, targeted products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary. Water should be kept cool-to-moderate and well-oxygenated rather than warm and still, in line with its fast-stream origin.
Conservation
Schistura alticrista is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, reflecting how little is known about its population size, trend, or the full extent of its range beyond the original collection records from the Nam Mae Yuam basin. This is a common status for narrow-range Schistura species, many of which are documented from only a handful of localities.
It is reportedly taken by subsistence fisheries in its native range and appears occasionally, but rarely, in the aquarium trade; there is no evidence of a trade-driven population impact, but the genuine data gap means a real decline could go unnoticed. As with many small stream endemics in mainland Southeast Asia, the more tangible long-term pressures are likely habitat-related — deforestation, water extraction and stream modification within its restricted basin — rather than anything directly documented in the literature reviewed here.
